Persona 4 and FF XII both released on 2006 and received critical acclaim. Its bugging me, which was better jrpg. Personally i enjoyed FF XII International Zodiac Job System more combat wise over vanilla FF XII and P 4, but then i again i haven't played P 4 Golden (which is improved version).

Well?

Love both games. Not sure what I'd put on top anymore. It's been too long since I last played Final Fantasy XII for me to confidently say one over the other.

Persona 4, and I'm one of those guys who actually likes FF12.

Also, Persona 4 released in 2008. Persona 3 was the one that came out in 2006.

@indzman:

That's a no brainer. Persona 4 all the way! I did really like the gameplay of FF12 but everything else about it along with with the characters felt pretty vanilla.

Persona 4 Golden was awesome and it added hours of story to boot!

Persona 4.

FF12 has a neat system in that gambit system, especially in the international version, but that combat is atrocious. Persona 4's dungeons are their own issue, but the rest of the gameplay can overcome that short coming.

Persona 4 for sure.

But if we are comparing Persona 3 and FFXII, then I'd actually go with FFXII. I played so much of that game. Same with both Persona games, but I found the content in FFXII to be more appealing than P3.

Persona 3>>>FFXII

Persona 4>>>Both

XII wasn't a bad game imo, it's just the characters and plot were very forgettable.

Depends on which version of each we are talking.

  • Persona 4 vs FF12 - P4 comes out on top.
  • Persona 4 Golden vs FF12 IZJS - FF12 comes out on top.

P4G was utter garbage compared to the original, while IZJS improved FF12 to the point of making it somewhat playable.

Yes

Lost interest in both after 8-10 hours of playtime.

I'd give Persona 4 the edge over FF XXII, but I don't understand the praise for either.

If these are the supposed "crown jewels" of the modern JRPG genre...then color me unimpressed.

JRPG's as a whole have been dreadful for the most part since the turn of the century.

Persona 4 doesnt have that combat system. Ugh...

So despite it all, Persona 4.

Well... Marie certainly did suck. And was a horribly written character.

But anything else that made it suck compared to P4? I think I only got past the first dungeon before I removed the game from my Vita, so I didnt get to see much more.

@indzman: Persona 4

FF12 was the start of the downfall for FF series , it wasnt bad but it felt like a mediocre single player MMORPG than a classic FF game to me at the time .. and a bad one !

@Maroxad: although I love p4g it has one of the worst dungeons I've ever played in a video game. Marie's dungeon is God awful. It's at the end of the game and they basically strip you of all your items and I think you start every fight with half the SP you had going into the fight and most doors automatically trigger a battle. If i remember right you had to finish it in a single day and it was like 11 floors, it had mid-bosses you had to fight that dropped keys that opened locked doors on different floors so you basically had to explore every floor. It was shit

I cant say because I didn't play much of FF12. I did not like FF12 at the time because I was a traditionalist :P. But now, I'm willing to give FF12 another try this time around.

@Maroxad:
Aside from Marie's inclusion in the story (and her dungeon, which mems explained well enough though it wasn't that hard just tedious), the game's just too easy. They add a bunch of new features that take away challenge from the combat.

Suddenly any party member can jump in and do a random attack or skill that helps out, which in theory is a good thing but really just sucks any challenge from the game even on the hardest difficulties. Think of it like a critical hit; if it lands, SWEET! But you don't expect every hit to be a critical; these skills activate more frequently than critical hits.

I'm not 100% on this, but they're tied to Social Links as well, so it's not like you can just turn them off for the sake of challenge, either.

Oh and the other thing is the return of Skill Cards. What is strategy? Just feed a persona with no glaring weaknesses one of every elemental attack and go nuts on the protagonist's turn.

Haven't played FFXII, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Persona 4 as easily one of the best JRPGs I've played, that and Persona 3.

P4G is a far more rounded experience (in spite of the groan-worthy Maria S.Link and DLC quest). FFXII certainly has way more going on but its weak ending (as well as some of its cast) and tedious post-game activities are inhibiting.

Final Fantasy 12 was better than p4, but both are kind of AVERAGE. Would probably get a 7 if they were reviewed today.

Both of these games serve escapist purposes, one does it by creating a run-of-the-mill fantasy that is totally seperate from real life, and the other gives you a more real-life fantasy. Which one you prefer is up to you, it's totally subjective. After all, the actual best game ever is Persona 3.
