Hello, I am new to this forum. Not sure if this is the place I should be posting but I read the rules and it doesnt say you cant post console vs pc/console threads. Anyway since I have basically started my summer holidays (I am at college) I figured I may as well get a console or a PC. I know how to build PC's and have already estimated that the mid-range PC I will build will cost me 600 GBP including the monitor (Has a X4 955 CPU and a HD 6870 GPU). Now in comparison the PS3 would cost me 150 GBP (used) + 100 GBP for a 1080p monitor so 250 GBP overall (I am planning on playing on a monitor an already know how to set up the monitor to work with the PS3). I have a decent bit of money in my bank account but I would prefer to save as much as possible for next year. Also I already have a laptop which is very good for internet browsing, photoshop and media but is HORRIBLE for games. Also for those playing with a PS3 using a HD monitor how is the experience (picture quality and sound)? For the time being I am planning on playing Mass Effect 2 and Demons Souls, in the future Skyrim, Dark Souls and Uncharted 3. Another game that interests me is Shogun 2. I know that you people have more experience than me in these things so I would appreciate it if you could provide more insight as to what the better option would be concerning my situation . Thanks!

I don't know from experience but I've heard that a PS3 + monitor is not a good combo.

not to be mean or anything but why don't you go do your own research, we don't know what you like to play or your gaming habits. Go look at what is best for you.

Depends on what games you want to play.

I'd say it all depends on the games you like. If you have any interest in strategy games, any type, then PC is your best bet. If you like multiplats then id say overall PC is your best bet. If however you like the look of the PS3 exclusives then go PS3. It has some great games. I own both, graphically PC is in a different league. It does however lack action adventure exclusives. Makes up for this with some stunning Strategy games and MMO's. So many different variations of these genres make the PC a must for me. Also remember steam. You can quickly build up a great games library through deals alone.

I have played 360 on a monitor and it looks fine, better than the small crappy TV I used to have in my room. Getting sound is where it can get more complicated you will need something to get the VGA cables to connect to speakers or something. Sound should work fine as well but I can't speak from experience when it comes to it.

I prefer RPG and Action Adventure mostly, I also like FPS and RTS but not as much as RPG and Action Adventure.

I used my monitor before, it was fine. You just have to make sure your monitor is HDCP compliant which I think almost all monitors are now. @TC I was leaning towards PC until I realized you had a laptop because of it's multiple uses. I game with both and you really can't go wrong either way. Look at the Sony exclusive games though because that's one advantage the PS3 has. Sony develops a lot of good games.

I have both a PC and PS3 and I hardly ever play games on my PC. Each person is different, though.

Hmmm, I'd PS3. If you'd have said RPG and RTS I'd have said PC. I love RTS ( or any stategy game) and RPG so love PC. There a so many great RPG's on PC. Many great indie and lesser known ones that never get to consoles too. As for strategy, well, so many id need 3 pages just to describe the different sub genres lol.

Good point! Strategy games PC for sure, one for PS3 is if you like to play with a group of friends games like (rockband, Little Big Planet, Buzz Quiz, etc...)

Looking at your posts through the thread it seems to me that maybe you would be better served with a PS3.

Yes, that is true. I often play LBP2 with my daughter, play rockband too with my older 2 kids, usually singing when drunk lol. Also PS3 is great for sports games. FIFA etc in a group.

You won't be able to play demon souls, dark souls and uncharted on a PC, so i'm suggesting to buy a PS 3.
Save money untill Skyrim is out and buy a pc then.
