Patcher Is At It Again: "Nothing," The Xbox One Can Do

“At this point what can Microsoft do, if anything, to close the gap between the Xbox One and PS4?”

Pachter’s answer was simple: “Nothing.” At this point, two years into the console’s life cycle, Mr. Pachter believes there’s nothing the Xbox can do to catch up now. To support his claim, Pachter took a look back at how the PlayStation 2, Sony’s best-selling console, sold 170 million units while Microsoft’s best-selling console, the Xbox 360, sold just 80 million units in its lifetime. He points out that in Xbox history the best-selling platform only sold half as many units as PlayStation’s best-selling platform. “We should start every console cycle assuming Sony’s going to outsell Microsoft 2 to 1, because they have twice as many people who know what their console is and like.”

He is generally wrong, but just about every one realizes this competition is over. This us going to be PS1 style domination. It won't get PS2 levels bad...I don't think.

The PlayStation 2 was available for like 13 years and most of those sales are attributed to extremely low prices and marketing in third world countries....

My question is when will Sony do something with their moment in the sun? Yeah they sell a lot of consoles but I'm still waiting for the 'wow' moment which hasnt happened for *me* regarding PS4. I bought a PS4 for Deep Down, EQ Next and KUF2 all games that Sony backburnered.

I dont like jrpgs, I'm not into the Souls games and if I wanted VR I'd do it on a PC that can actually handle it. Shenmue reboot? No thanks game is overrated by people who were 12 the first time they played it. I dont play FF either. I get that these are the second coming for some people, but not me. The multiplats are pretty much the same to me (I dont care about 900 v 1080 its not a big deal to me I grew up playing Atari 2600 in the 70s its all an upgrade to me)

I get this is system wars so bragging on consoles sold means something around here, but I dont own Sony stock so the number of consoles sold really doesnt effect me either way.

I actually think he's right on this one. Nobody expects to see Xbox One catches up to PS4. MS is just gonna have to suck it up and just do the best they can and they do put the pressure on Sony for time to time when it's all good for competition.

The PS2 sold 100 million units in 5 years. And another 55 million while the next gen consoles were hogging all the limelight. That's quite impressive.

I admit he's right, there's nothing they can do to narrow the gap but that doesn't mean the Xbox can't still do well on its own. They can still give people reasons to buy one, still try to deliver quality games to their patrons, that's all anybody can ask of them at this point.

Pachter is a moron in so many ways. All MS needs to do is invest in good quality exclusive games and keep them exclusive to the Xbone.

You say the PS2 sold at cheap prices to sell what it did, yet the Gamecube was $99 by 2003 (PS2 and Xbox was $172 at that time). In fact the PS2 kept the same price as the Xbox the whole gen. They even dropped the price at similar times. You'd have a point if the PS2 was dirt cheap in comparison to it's direct competition, but it wasn't.

He's right, the gap will get bigger and bigger until MS calls it a day. Can't wait.

Well, duh??? Who actually believes the XB1 will catch up at this point in time? The PS4 will easily sell 2x more units LTD than the XB1 by the end of this generation.

The point is correct. PS4 has won the gen in terms of sales. That we already know. It would have to be a steady stream of games, a couple key new IP's, and exclusives. And Microsoft simply does not have that. For whatever reason the PS4 outsold the Xbox.

Although I hope the Xbox can close the gap a little and at least make it appear like they have a chance, I think Nintendo has a better shot to do something against the PS4 if they nail it with the NX system. I do believe the Xbox can take back NA and the UK, but that won't be enough this gen.

He's 100% correct. Sony are master manipulators so they can win gens despite not having worthwhile exclusives.

He was right about PS Vita being a failure, so I'll give him that.

I don't see the Xbone catching up either. That said, this is a complete non-issue for Xbone owners. The system is doing more than well enough to continue getting most big releases and in the end it will largely share the same library as PS4.

Nintendo would have to do right out of this world to do anything to the PS4,there is no recorded history on the market where a console came after another has hit 20 million and did something at all.

In fact the biggest example is the PS2 by the time the xbox and gamecube landed sony had some 23 to 25 million units sold,and look how 1 sided the beating was,the PS4 has 30 million and is selling faster still than the PS2 so i don't Nintendo catching not even if they did like the wii again.

Not for what he said about Xbox One, but when he compared the PS2 to the Xbox 360. Imagine there is X amount of the demographic to go around, well Sony got most of the demographic during the 6th gen. Last gen Xbox and Playstation pretty much shared the demographic. By the end they were both on around 80 million plus.

Plus the PS2 wasn't in the same time frame, it had some time before and lasted many years after.
