OMG God of War, our GOTY, is a blatant Zelda clone!!!

So I continued playing GoW last night, for lack of anything better.

And that's when it hit me: the game is a Zelda clone!

before fanboys go nuts, please read my reasonings:

1. World design.

-GoW has a central area, from which you can enter ice level, garden level, fire level and so on. Its like the design has been copied straight from OoT or TP!!!

2. Zelda puzzles and tools.

-Remember the windmills in Wind Waker; you blew at them with your leaf to make them rotate, and they would lift plaforms and stuff as a result..?

-Well, the windmills have been copied to GoW. Only, instead of leaf, Kratos uses his axe to make the windmills spin so as to lift platforms and stuff.

-oh, and Kratos uses his axe in exact same way Link uses boomerang in Zelda games, to solve puzzles.

3. Mysterious helper.

-In Zeldas, Link is always helped by mysterious strangers that appear at key moments to give Link help and advice.

-In GoW, a mysterious witch appears at key moments to give Kratos help and advice!

I could list more, but I shall not bore you further. But I gotta say, the feeling of deja-vu you get from GoW if youre Zelda veteran, its uncanny. I actually feel like I am playing Zelda most of the time, with GoW!

How such unoriginal copycat game got GOTY I do not understand.

Zelda wasn't the first to do all of those.... so this comparison fails hard.

I think you need to look up what the word ‘clone’ means.

Zelda sucks and is nowhere near the masterpiece that is God Of War.

God of War is actually fun and Kratos weapons don’t break because he is a REAL man and not a Soy boy twig like link.

First time I ever seen someone comparing God of War (2018) to Legend of Zelda game. Interesting.

I wish that it was a Zelda clone. It would be a better game if it was. Moreover, it would then actually be more of a game than a movie.

I haven't, but I played enough of these other movie-games like Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us to know that I hate them and therefore I wasn't going to again waste my time and money on yet another one. I used to feel that I had to at least try them given their critical acclaim, but those days are over. I've suffered though enough of them to know one when I see one and to know that I would just be frustrated and bored sitting through all those cut-scenes waiting until I get to use my controller again for some more shallow gameplay that only serves to lead me to the next cut-scene where I have to put the controller down again.

I think it says something that even a non-gamer with no fanboy biases like Conan O'brien can notice that it is more movie than game to the point where they start pointing out that they haven't done any of the things happening on the screen and making jokes that "we haven't touched the controller for 45 minutes". That's the same kind of thoughts I had playing Sony's other movie-games in the past so no way am I going to waste my time on another one when even Conan O'brien can notice these things about the "game".

@storm_of_swords: Yeah I watched that video and then played the game. There is quite a bit of gameplay in the early section of the game. You just have explore the early areas. And the movie game BS that you guys spout doesn't really apply to this game.

These are also things that are in a bunch of other games. For instance, the central area design is very much like Crash Bandicoot in ways.

GoW isn't an innovative game, but it's a really good one.

@SecretPolice: Cows should take the term "movie game" as a compliment. It means presentation and production values are great. Not everything has to be hollow trash like State of Decay and Sea of Thieves.

One of the things I miss about the old God of War games is the grandiose, epic soundtracks that made them feel more like epics. Because this is a walk and talk and you have to listen to them chatter, all of that is gone. The music rarely plays outside of battles now, making the whole thing more depressing. The level design is simpler because it has to accommodate the NPC companion and the single camera shot. It has a zoomed in over the shoulder camera not because that is in the best interest of an action game (which it isn't), but because that's considered more filmic (by idiots) and it assists with the single camera shot. The game also has more of these cinematic moments that take control away from the player than the old games did. The old God of War games used cutscenes, but they were not as frequent. It IS a movie game.

That's funny, pretty big Zelda fan here and I never got that impression from the game.

I remember when all first person shooters were called Doom clones, good times.

There is uncanny similarity between GoW and Twilight Princess in the various architectural structures around GoW.

The huge gate-like structures around the lake, for example are like something pulled straight outta TP.

Same goes for various creatures you meet along the way.

Too bad SW is full of moronic trolls who cannot see wood for the trees...

Funny how people call god of war a movie game. Played the game on god of war mode spent like 60+plus hours in one of the most satisfying single play through ive had in recent memories.
