Poll Ok, I got a Wii U ... (72 votes)

What were you thinking? 22%
$215 too good to pass up. 2014 will be phenomenal. 64%
What's a Wii U? 14%

but only because it was cheap. The person barely played it and sold it to me for $215. Did I make a mistake? It looks like 2014 will be a great year for the system. Super Smash, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong, Zelda Wii U. Super Mario 3D World coming out in 4 days.

I don't think you made a mistake. It's not my personal choice among the consoles, but I can admit that it has some fun games coming up. The Wii U is just like the Wii to me. Not a terrible console to have, but I'd need one of the HD twins first.

What games did you get?

It's not a mistake per se, it's not getting any big third party game ever, but its exclusive lineup will be great.

I like my Wii U a lot. My purchase was worth it at full price IMO.

It'll get some great exclusives. That's what the WiiU is about.

Nothing wrong with that though. Just gotta make sure it's not your only console.

@charizard1605: @TheGuardian03: I didn't get any games with the system. But I am interested in Super Mario 3D World and all those other games I mentioned coming out in 2014.

Ah. Well I recommend that you also get Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD. Those two along with Mario 3D World should mean that you get sufficient mileage out of the system for now.

I have had a Wii U since it was released and it is a great consoles, but it just needs more games. Also I have to say that Zombi U is one of the best zombie games ever made.

I'd consider it for $215, but $150 will be my breaking point.

It's a great system. I would recommend getting ZombiU, NSMBU, and NSLU. Nintendo Land is fun if you have friends over for local coop, but is worthless otherwise.

I was thinking about those two. Hey, how are the multiplats on Wii U? Any experience with Assassins Creed 4 on it?

Really good system. Doesn't have any heavy hitters yet which is crazy but definitely pick up Pikmin, WW HD, and also NSMBWU. NSMBWU is a blast to play with a group of people. Played it when it first released and we had no idea we had been playing for over 5 hours.

Assassin's Creed IV on Wii U is great; Gamepad functionality is nice, it looks better than the X360 and PS3 versions, and it has full multiplayer (unlike a lot of Wii U multiplats).

However, be warned, it probably won't get any DLC (if Assassin's Creed DLC is your thing), so there is that.

WiiU is a great console

Is it less powerful than the competition?.. Sure.. But its not NEARLY the problem this gen as it was last gen. Wii games looked like straight up garbage on hdtvs last gen. WiiU games look great. And it has an awesome upcoming list of exclusives next year.

Now was a good time to get one. There is just enough quality. Wonderful 101 is awesome and pretty underrated, Pikmin 3 is great, Wind Waker HD is a fantastic remake, Nintendo land is one of the best party/mini game collections that i've ever played.. Wii Sports Club and Wii Fit U are very playable and entertaining if you're into that sort of thing. The Lego City game is fun. And of course super mario 3D land looks incredible.

Well probably get a better idea in the January nintendo direct of whats to come next year. But id say no you didn't make a mistake.

now im just glad i dont have to buy a new console to play mario 3d world this week

How couldn't you recommend Wonderful 101? That plus Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD and the upcoming Mario 3D Land are really, really nice and must owns.

@Thread Starter, keep an eye out for Monolith's X RPG (part of the X series; Xenogears, Xenoblade Chronicles, etc.) and Bayonetta 2. They're the reason i'm waiting till late 2014 to get the WiiU. Especially X.

It's a hard game to get into, and I wanted him to start out with games that are more universally easy to like. TW101 is, er, eccentric.

Personally, I would skip over the cash in Wind Waker HD until it's at a lower price, unless you never played the Gamecube version before. Old HD converted games aren't worth top dollar to me, unless as I said it's a new game to you.

As a Wii U owner, I would recommend exclusives on it, and here is my list to you TC:

  1. Super Mario 3D
  2. New Super Mario U (+ Luigi)
  3. Wonderful 101
  4. Pikmin 3

Have fun.

Yeah, but it's unique as **** and looks so God damn fun. That game is a no-brainer to me. It's going to be glued with my console purchase wen i get the WiiU.

I mean, have you played the game? If i recall correctly you do have a WiiU.

I would eliminate Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 from that list if shopping for a five year old, and perhaps insert two Scribblenauts games on Wii U (Unlimited and Unmasked), and maybe Lego Undercover (Get this one cheap, old launch title).

New Super Mario U and Super Mario 3D are both games that five year old will enjoy. I would avoid Zelda WW HD as that isn't a kid friendly game. It requires a lot of reading and exploring. The child may want to play that in three years at age 8-10, but by that time the game should be $20 as it's just an HD port.

You also need to talk to the child and explain to them that the Tablet is a very expensive controller and they can't treat it rough like they may do with other controllers.

A second Wii U Tablet in Japan costs nearly $200, I think last I heard it costs $150 to replace the Tablet if you contact NOA. I would also consider a screen protector for the Tablet Screen on the Wii U Tablet as well.

None of them are going to be more inappropriate than a PG movie or anything. W101 might be a little too hard (I haven't tried the easy mode, so maybe it's not that tough). Lego City Undercover is also a lot of fun. There are a lot of jokes that you will likely find funny so it wouldn't be all that bad watching them play it, either.

True, but that's hardly surprising considering it's Nintendo. Pikmin 3 also lacks online as does New Super Mario U. The list will go on and on, but games that have been online in the past will probably be online like Smash and Mario Kart. Those games were online in the past, and they aren't a big deal to add online for those two. Those games having online is not an ambitious use of online for Nintendo. In other words, they are easy to tack online modes too as it's already been done before. Let's be honest, Nintendo knows they can save money and craft an excellent SP game with couch co op and not worry about spending more for online gaming in their 1st party titles. It really comes down to maximizing profits. Call of Duty needs online to get major sales, typical Mario Single player games, don't need online to get major sales.

I thought the lack of online would suck at first, but Online isn't Nintendo's favorite thing and besides the Wii U's online isn't that good as it is, but I won't go into it too much (headset jack missing in pro controller, small memory, poor online infrastructure, Online name not transferable, Online modes missing in multiplats, DLC support lacking, etc) other than to say Mario 3D is best played with friends on a couch that you can strangle rather than randoms online, haha.

If I want the best online experiences, I have my PC, PS3, 360, PS4, and soon to be Xbone to game on. The TC at least got a good price for the Wii U, just keep to the high quality Wii U exclusives and you'll be fine. :P

BTW: I'm not defending their weak online approach. Sure, I wish Nintendo took a serious approach to online gaming, but I wished that since the Gamecube, so I've had time to get over it...haha.

Nintendo Network, and it uses Miiverse as its community. The actual online infrastructure is top notch, but as I learned recently, there's shit all to actually play online on the console lol.

That should change with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros though

If I want the best online experiences, I have my PC, PS3, 360, PS4, and soon to be Xbone to game on. The TC at least got a good price for the Wii U, just keep to the high quality Wii U exclusives and you'll be fine. :P

BTW: I'm not defending their weak online approach. Sure, I wish Nintendo took a serious approach to online gaming, but I wished that since the Gamecube, so I've had time to get over it...haha.

So much this. So. Much. This.

The problem is, when Nintendo does decide to do online, it does it well- Mario Kart and Pokemon, for example, both had great online functionality. But they are generally so averse to online, it's ridiculous.

I seriously hope they come out with a flagship shooter with an emphasis on online on the Wii U, it would be needed to sell the console to mainstream demographics, and third parties won't put it there. But then again, this is Nintendo, I'm just surprised they had something as forward thinking as Miiverse integrated into the console in the first place (and then promptly wasted with no major games supporting online play).

I have confidence that Retro could pull it off, but it wouldn't have to be a shooter but that's probably a good genre/place to start.

I would love to see Nintendo approach the online space with something truly unique and different, but that's probably a Koopa pipe dream...

Maybe we'll get another Metroid Prime Hunters, but this time done right.

And yeah, I'm sure if they did decide to go all in for online, they'd do it with their own twist on it. Trouble is, like you said, pipe dream at best. They're not going to do it, not this round of hardware, at least.

Thank you!

Well, Nintendo makes fantastic games, but understandably due to my age, I don't rely on them as my only gaming resource.

I do love me other systems too. I go where the kinds of games I love go. :)

Lol, Nintendo fans just like playing their games, I guess. Side effect of Nintendo side stepping the hardware race, there's no pissing contest about the number of pixels on screen.

And then you get assholes like me xD
