@charizard1605: well, shinier is what i meant, not gameplay wise. we don't really have (nor is anything announced other than Star Citizen, but that's for 2028, the year it comes out) anything that feels next gen in the gameplay department, and that includes TW3 and especially MGS5. Last gen got us GTA5, and when you compare that game to something like TW3/MGS5, these two aren't very impressive considering GTA5 ran on 10y old consoles and is more of an achievement than MGS5.

@FireEmblem_Man: I said potential. Doesnt take rocket science to realize one product will reach half the install base of 2. I own a Wii u AND 3ds. This does both so logically any potential ninty product owner will only be buying one piece of hardware now.

@silversix_: right like Killzone, Knack and Ryse.

As if these were the only games available... Also, KZ felt next gen. It wasn't a very good game at all but it felt like you're playing on new hardware and a game that is not possible on a 7th gen system.

No it doesn't :/

It feels like a shinier seventh gen game. Nothing about it feels next gen. Witcher 3 and MGSV are the only two games that feel next gen so far, maybe Hitman, but I haven't actually played that enough to be able to pass judgement on it

As much as I'm enjoying Deus Ex: Mankind Divide, it doesn't look graphically next gen at all. It looks like a much shinier version of Human Revolution, with better lighting and less foliage on the skin.

I mean, its certainly not the best looking game but the graphical jump (IF YOU'RE PLAYING ON PC!!!) is humongus.

Sure, but if it's just graphics, then eh. As long as games on Switch look good enough (a lot of Wii U games already approached this level), it doesn't matter. Plus look at this as a handheld, and its graphical capability becomes a whole lot more impressive.

How would you guys feel if Nintendo decided to charge for online multiplayer if it meant they would catch up with LIVE/PSN? Is it even possible for them to implement a competent online infrastructure for free? I've never played online with the Wii U but I've been told that it's a mixed bag. Would you be happy with a well managed account system but everything else is a Wii U like experience (no voice chat for one thing) and remains free?

Sony managed to offer competent online free with PS3 and PS Vita. Don't see why Nintendo can't.

@22Toothpicks: nintendo as a company can never compete with Sony or ms in terms of services including OS, ui, and online. If I'm not mistaken they outsourced much of this to another company so maybe we'll get something we like.

@charizard1605: I guess but I always found PSN on the PS3 to be one giant lagfest. I know it wasn't on my end because LIVE was pretty much always a smooth experience in term of multiplayer. And those fucking download speeds...FML.

PS2 used decentralized online servers, so it really was very basic and primitive. PSP, eh, same. PS3 was alright, laggy and slow, and lacking some features, but for what it was (free), it was great. Vita, state of the art- great connectivity, plus most major features. PS4... I mean, it's pretty good, but yeah, definitely not worth $60.

I've rarely had a problem with a Ninty UI. In fact I found the simple Wii interface to be one of my favorites. I'm hoping the OS will be as minimal as possible. Nintendo should realize that not many are buying their hardware for multimedia apps. Just keep it quick, streamlined and keep whomever programmed the Wii U OS far away. The small sample size I've experienced of the Wii U was an agonizingly tedious experience.

Wii and 3DS OSs were great. Hopefully they keep those in mind when designing the Switch interface.

@22Toothpicks: Well you're right about people not buying ninty stuff for apps and trying to move focus to that would be a huge misstep. So yea simpler is better. But simpler also means less feature rich and less reason to turn on the system.

So they can graduate from total crap to still not very good? Eh. Wouldn't it be better to just charge a fee? Come to think of it, does the money paid for LIVE actually go towards maintaining servers? Sorry for the random question it's just that I never considered where that money is actually going until just now lol. Thank goodness I haven't paid for that shit in years.

The thing is, do people trust enough to pay Nintendo for online play? I don't think they do. Plus, having gated online access would alienate Nintendo's biggest demographic, i.e. the kids.

And Sony and MS claim that the fees goes towards maintenance and development of services. I think that's balderdash.

@wolverine4262: Dem gamez, bruh!

That's why I love Nintendo. They are a game company not a media company and with their devs efforts now consolidated to one console it should, in theory, be magnificent. There's a certain charm about simple plug and play gaming.

My realistic expectations for the event:

-No talk of specs other than the typical superficial Ninty stuff (Wi-fi, storage, battery life etc)

-Details on price and availability

-A complete rundown of features

-Zelda BotW clip

-More footage of the new Mario

-A trailer for the Mario x Rabbids game

-Lots of talk about "enhanced" Wii U ports

-A short montage showcasing 3rd party games like FIFA, NBA 2K, Skyrim

-Recorded interviews of many devs saying how amazed they are by the device. So amazed that they announce zero fucking games for it

Yeah, I'm keeping myself in check for this one. Nintendo loves to disappoint when they have the whole world's attention.

Oh and a lovely surprise teaser of Retro's project would make the show for me. I doubt it's even discussed though.

  • Agree with no talk on specs, no one wants to hear that boring stuff.
  • Amen on details with price and availability.
  • Will be cool to show off the features, maybe give Miiverse drawling some colors.
  • Some cool Zelda stuff is a must.
  • Gotta show off that Mario, hopefully they launch it on day 1.
  • Forget about MarioxRabbids, no one cares, save that for a direct.
  • Yeah boy, lets see them Wii U ports, give us DLC for free baby.
  • I agree with short montage for FIFA, NBA2K, etc. Interest will be there, but i think small.
  • No interviews with devs, save that for another day. That will bore people.
  • We need Skyrim day one and another big third party game that has mad appeal. Like Dark Souls or something.
  • Then show some tease for coming soon, but make it 3rd party stuff, save big 1st party for E3.

This would give everyone something to buy on launch. Some people will get Skyrim and Mario 3D, some will get Zelda and Dark Souls. Or maybe they get a sport game, Wii U port, no telling. Would make a killer launch. Sounds too good to be true. Wii U launch was garbage compared to this potential.

@22Toothpicks: yea we'll see if they can deliver on that end. And let's wait and see if this device is as simple as plug and play.

Bout the only thing that'd get me excited is a new kid Icarus tbh. That's the only truly new thing I've liked from ninty in a long time.

I don't wanna sound too harsh but much of what they've done recently has felt awfully copy and paste. I'm thinking specifically Mk and smash bros.

@charizard1605: Yeah I would recoil in disgust if they instituted a paywall. However, they've got to do something. I appreciate that they are the last bastion of local multiplayer but it just isn't enough anymore.

What if port of Kid Icarus: Uprising with better graphics, added stuff, online bonuses, and better controls added?

@charizard1605: some of the stuff in that looks amazing. Like the camping stuff. Really feels like miyamoto going back to his core reasons for making Zelda. I just dont want to buy a switch for it when the wiiu is caked in dust and the gf stole the 3ds for pokemon moon and the latest dungeon crap.

I would also flip out for a new advanced wars. Fire emblem is beyond boring.

@wolverine4262: Oh I would agree. Games like Super Mario 3D World, Toad's Tressure Tracker, Pikmin 3 etc are also all well crafted games that lack that certain little extra we've come to expect of Nintendo. Honestly the Wii U has a solid B+ catalog of exclusive but it was never quite enough to entice me. I need something stellar to buy a Nintendo box. Like a Mario Galaxy 2 or Zelda: ALBW.

The thought of the new Mario being more 64-like has me very excited.

Okay my Nintendo fanboy hopes and dreams predictions:

-Switch's Tegra SoC is indeed Pascal based and features a full array of SIX SMs within the GPU making it ~700GFLOPS undocked.

-RAM is 6GBs of 128-bit LPDDR4. Bandwidth simlar to Xbone

-Retro's new project is a revival of Star Tropics. Massive open world with a mind-fuckingly awesome art style

- Zelda+new Mario day one. Zelda runs at a locked 60FPS with same fidelity as Wii U version

-Rockstar announces RDR: Definitive Edition as a Switch timed exclusive. Day one

-Dark Souls Trilogy announced. Day one

-Mega Man Legends 3 back in development. Partially funded by Nintendo making it exclusive. Fall 2017

-New F-Zero. Once again being developed in part with Sega. Spring 2018

-Price is actually $199 for the Basic model, 32GB storage. $249 for Premium w/ Spatoon: Second Coat Edition as pack-in, 64GB storage.

Yup, just smoked a whole bowl of crack.

Good guesses, however, I think the one with Rockstar will disappoint you as they have no plans supporting the Switch. Here's my guess, almost a lot like yours

  • Switch is run by a custom Tegra P1, when docked, it will go upto 1 TFlops, undocked will go less
  • 4 GB of LPDDR4, and editional DRAM for faster loadings
  • 32 GB Internal Storage, plus a 32 GB SDXC card included with a total up to 64 GB of storage space that can be upgrade up to 128 GB max or more
  • Game Carts are 16 GB minimum, but will be going up to 32 GB if devs need more space and special compression techniques without sacrificing quality and content.
  • Nintendo OS is a custom Android OS based on Either Lolipop or Marshmallow, whatever Vulkan is supported on
  • Unified Accounts meaning all VC games will be tide to the account instead of the hardware. Will still do the 3DS transfer to new system if you want all your purchases in the console.
  • VC support day 1 w/Mother 3 being the flagship launch title, also includes Wave Race: Blue Storm, and Pikmin 1.
  • No friend codes, but a new online service that you may have to pay for, but will include special discounts and deals for eShop titles exclusively.
  • Region-Free, be able to download eShop titles without having to wait for a European release or vice versa with North America
  • Some crazy feature that will be able to stream the Switch to another Tablet for Multiplayer purposes, only requires a Nintendo Switch Pro controller
  • New Nintendo Phone App for iOS and Android that will share Miiverse messages without having you to carry the Switch everywhere. Just log into your universal Nintendo account.

Like I said in a previous thread, Switch is the perfect weapon for Nintendo, doubly so if the pricepoint makes it immediately accessible to their mobile fanbase. 2017 will be the Year of the Switch. Quote me.

Nice! :P

@wolverine4262: Mario can still be a very innovative experience with a 64-esque open ended level design. I'm not sure I would want a full on open world Mario but something a lot less linear than the recent games would be great.

But, yeah, the real dream is Nintendo making an all new IP with fresh ideas. Who knows, maybe Retro has been cooking up something brand new.

That's my entire point, they'll probably drop MiiTomo as it brings nothing of value, and will make a Miiverse Universal app for iOS and Android instead. Which should be free and not under a paywall if Nintendo does start charging for online.

Okay my Nintendo fanboy hopes and dreams predictions:

-Switch's Tegra SoC is indeed Pascal based and features a full array of SIX SMs within the GPU making it ~700 while -RAM is 6GBs of 128-bit LPDDR4. Bandwidth simlar to Xbone

undocked

-Retro's new project is a revival of Star Tropics. Massive open world with a mind-fuckingly awesome art style

- Zelda+new Mario day one. Zelda runs at a locked 60FPS with same fidelity as Wii U version

-Rockstar announces RDR: Definitive Edition as a Switch timed exclusive. Day one

-Dark Souls Trilogy announced. Day one

-Mega Man Legends 3 back in development. Partially funded by Nintendo. Fall 2017

-New F-Zero. Once again being developed in part with Sega. Spring 2018

-Price is actually $199 for the Basic bundle, 32GB storage.

Lol those aren't my actual expectations/guess. Total pie in the sky list.

This thing had better be region free. They have no legitimate reason to keep region locking hardware, stupid fucking practice. And there is no fucking way Nintendo adopts an Android variant. The Switch would be cracked within minutes. It'll get cracked at some point anyway but I don't think Nintendo will hasten that process.

Nintendo makes money off Miitomo. Plus its main purpose is to get players points to be used to buy other games. But yeah, would be sweet to get an app. I love using Miiverse and My Nintendo on my phone as it is. App would be sweet.

Just my guess. The reason I stated a custom Android OS, is because its open and free for anyone to work on it. Much like how Amazon has the Fire OS, besides, Nintendo adds their own proprietary features to be sure that Nintendo OS won't be cracked. I see them stripping the OS to make it more focus on gaming than multi-task features other than sharing video clips and photos. Also, Nintendo did hire a former Windows Phone 8.1 developer to work on the OS here

NVIDIA CEO HYPING UP THE SWITCH

http://venturebeat.com/2017/01/08/nv...d-tv/view-all/

Question: Since you expanded the Shield TV with all these new features, do you have a border with the Nintendo Switch? Is there anything you’re not going to do, like more tablet work? Is there some way that the Switch fits in with the Shield TV ecosystem?

Huang: Nintendo Switch is a game console. It’s very Nintendo. That entire experience is going to be very Nintendo. The beauty of that company, the craft of that company, the philosophy of that company—they’re myopically, singularly focused on making sure that the gaming experience is amazing, surprising, and safe for young people, for children. Their dedication to their craft, that singular dedication, is quite admirable. When you guys all see Switch, I believe people are going to be blown away, quite frankly. It’s really delightful. But it has nothing to do with AI.

@charizard1605: Huang would hype a turd if it had Nvidia's name on it.

$250 with the new 3D Mario Bundled in would be an acceptable price. $250 without a game is a rip off and will sell like garbage after the hardcore Nintendo fanboys have already bought it.
