Given that even some of the lowest selling games made $10 million, I wonder how much it actually costs to develop and release a game. Well it said in the article about Gears only costing $10 million to make (somewhere on GS, too lazy to find/link it) that many big name titles cost upwards of 20 million to make.

$10 million in revenue... X copies sold * Y sticker price = revenue.
Then you gotta deduct whatever markup places like EB games puts on the games (they gotta make money too)... deduct advertising, packaging... then finally development cost.. and before you know it they are loosing money.
I'm getting tired of having to exlain this, shipped and sold are the same thing. MS/Sony/Nintendo/publishers/developers only make money off of products shipped to stores so shipped and sold are the exact same thing. Do you think MS/Sony/Nintendo/developers/publishers care if you buy their product? Absolutely not, the only thing that matters to them is that Wall Mart keeps sending them weekly orders. What do you people think companies do, ask Best Buy nicely if they can put their shiny new boxes on Best Buy's shelves?

C'mon, it was a big budget standalone that EA really pushed. Lots of marketing and the sales don't really show a lot.
Yeah it flopped sales wise for sure, but on the other hand they gain so many profits taht I don't think they care, did oyu saw madden, 300m profit made if I'm not mistaken.

So you seriously think that NPD is completely wrong. OMG I think (insert game) sold 5,000 more copies than they show! NPD is pretty close in what they calculate and their by far the best source to use for games sold.  If you can prove them wrong go ahead. Otherwise stop being an ignorant moron.
