I almost decided to but now HTC has one as well, so I plan to wait and see. but absolutly getting one at some point.

and for the record I have a Oculus Rift, I can watch movies and its a cool experience, I just dont do it as much because I have to set it up with wires, in a differnet room etc. I like the idea of stand alone, simple.

Oculus Go is great for watching movies, netflix etc since you can just lay back anywhere. With good headphones, you'll be able to match the IMAX theater experience aside from lower resolution. (but still close to 720p)

In a couple of years you'll be able to match IMAX resolution somewhat, but it might be another couple of years after that before that happens in standalones.

You definitely should check out BigScreen as it's also a social environment.

They are the leaders in VR, so yes. They are much further ahead than anyone else. PSVR might be selling more, but Oculus is investing in all corners of VR and have the best R&D team from what we've seen.

the quality of the response time is actually better in Oculus

but to be fair, one doesnt HAVE to be better than the other to not be 'garbage' to use your words.

They are both very close to each other in quality of experience.

VR is not ready for system wars yet so put that toy away

Oculus Rift is pretty much the best headset (aside from the Vive Pro) right now. Vive can match (maybe exceed) it when the Knuckles controllers release, but the Rift is generally a more polished product right now, and this continues over to the software side where you have Oculus Home / Oculus Dash.

Also in terms of R&D, they appear to be a lot further ahead than HTC and no doubt further than Sony. They have John Carmack and Michael Abrash as well, so there's also that.

Kind of, but you'll need to spend more to get it working and it has drawbacks:

@blueberry_bandit: so it isn't the best headset? There is only 3 headsets in the market and you say it is the best headset beside the Vive?

Didn't Vive offer better launch demos, room tracking, and controllers from the get go? How is Oculus further in R&D?

Doesn't Vive have Vive Room and is supported by Valve?

@tryit: I don't know, I didn't play it, I am just referring to other people reviews when they first came out. Didn't hear much about later on.

He told me the Oculus is the best headset and I want him to convince me. Why are you upset about that?

I said beside the Vive Pro which isn't even meant for consumers anyway. There are actually 9 high-end headsets on the market, or 10 if you include PIMAX.

It doesn't really matter if Vive was better at launch (it was) because Oculus caught up and exceeded it. Oculus has room-scale just like the Vive.

Valve's support for the Vive will come through with the Knuckles controllers, but those have yet to release.

This is why Oculus are the furthest ahead in R&D: https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/8h8vk8/the_future_of_oculus_rift/

he is just looking for a VR system war.

one headset being better than another is far from evidence that one is 'garbage' what a childish position.

@blueberry_bandit: Cool video, looks like a game changer stuff. Gloveless tracking, but I wonder how much of that will go into gaming? No haptic feedback will lessen the experience?

@tryit: it is called a discussion, bro. And this is SYSTEM WARS forum so if you don't like it go to another section.

just got a to roll my eyes.

I am out, the difference between the two is not radical, its silly to call one 'garbage' regardless of if one is better than the other, the difference is not strong enough

The hand tracking is meant more for media usuage, using VR for computing or work, and socialising. For example you can have infinite 1080p screens and move them around freely, and you would be able to see your keyboard and hands and type away like normal. And it also means you can easily slip on the headset, jump into an IMAX theater and start watching a movie quickly, and of course you'll be able to do complete sign language with people in VR.

But there might be some games that use it. For example if Oculus releases new controllers that you can drop (like the upcoming Knuckles controllers for Vive) then you could have all UI interfaces in the game be activated with the complete freedom of your hands. You could also put interfaces on your hands themselves and get free feedback from skin contact.

You might also have a Star Wars game that has you holding a lightsaber via controller in one hand and using force powers in the other.

Try again with high bitrate content and supersampling and with Virtual Desktop (on PC) or BigScreen. It's better than what you've experienced. The quality is 720p, maybe a little lower.

No, it is terrible. I would much rather watch video on my 4K OLED TV.

Obviously it's not on par with a 4K TV but it isn't terrible; that's exaggerating.

And as high resolution as a 4K TV is, it cannot give you an IMAX viewing experience like VR, especially one that you can share with friends across the world.

@blueberry_bandit: I sit close to my OLED TV and it offers superior quality to any IMAX screen. A simulated screen in VR does nothing for me.

It offers superior resolution, but the experience is not as immersive as an IMAX theater. VR offers more finetuned lighting, online viewing sessions, and over time will allow for better audio through HRTF.

You'll change your mind with gen 2 anyway.

I prefer the home theater experience to any public theater experience (even IMAX). I like to focus on the actual movie instead of being annoyed by others around me. So, at home, I either watch movies by myself or with others that do not annoy me. Also, the IMAX experience may be cool because of the large scale, but in terms of immersion, I prefer being up close to a 4K OLED which offers superior quality and does not require me to be moving my eyes/head as much.

Right, but this is VR. You can be in your own theater or share it with people that don't annoy you. Ultimately, it's VR so you can sit wherever you want and get the perfect position to ensure you don't move your eyes/head much anyway.

The only caveat is the resolution and comfort. Once those are solved, VR will always offer the most immersive movie watching experience. I'd expect that in 20 years most people that want an immersive experience will be using VR to watch their movies instead of visiting real theaters since it will just be outright better.

@BassMan: That's like my dad he talks all way threw anything on TV. Last proper thing I watched with him was 300 and it was hell. I was really looking forward to watching it too. He always say did you see that what just happened and explains it his way so you miss the next bit. This was about 5 years ago. He does it to my mum now and my mum tells him to shut up. One time when she did he had the nerve to say I missed that bit now.

Its arriving today but I cant set it up until my brother comes as I haven't a phone. I bet I'm only one with out one. I dont really need one no one to keep in contact with and I just use my house phone if needed. But more and more tech are needing phones just to set up these days like this and you see android or iPhone needed on a lot of things. So think my next thing is a up to date smart phone. My brother says though he has a cheap android phone laying about which I can have but I will buy one sooner or later.

Its arrived but cant set it up today :(. Any way I took it out of its box and the straps and material inside smells and smells that much that you cant breath. Just tried it for size and its a lot heavier then the rift also. Looks cheap and plastic but will give it ago when I can.

Sending it back for replacement. Head set gets very hot to touch after only 5 mins of use and there is a red pixel on the left lens. :(
