Vita is stuck in that awkward limbo of being more expensive to produce high graphical quality games for but still not as strong as PS3. More news at 11.

Also tell me when I can play Persona 4 Golden on this tablet. Then we'll talk.

Mobile gaming is getting better, and better. Meanwhile the rest are stuck in 320x240 or 960x544 with games that aren't really pushing forward.

I remember when nintendo had the market on lockdown with their unique, & clever games. By the time the next handheld is released that soc will be two, maybe three years old, & whatever is released will probably fall short of those specs/performance.

That's impressive performance for a device that undercuts the Surface Pro 2/3 by $500-600.

Still, with the Surface, you get full access to Windows, right?

@sailor232: They both have Intel HD Graphics 4400. The difference is that the Pro 3 runs at 2160x1440 resolution while the Pro 2 runs at 1920x1080 resolution. It would appear this is a resolution dependent test, and not a pure power comparison, reducing the relative performance of super high resolution tablets like the iPad Air and Pro 3. In a resolution independent test, I'm thinking the K1 would come out on top (since the Shield Tablet runs at x1200 and not x1080 like the Pro 2).

not any time soon. The new shield is almost on par with the intelHD 4400 graphics thats integrated to the core i7 ( which is impressive to say the least ) while the gpu in PS4 is more akin to a 7850/7870. Thats about 8-10x more powerful so even if gpu power in mobile devices increases 2x every year it would still take at least 5years to reach the level of consoles

@ladyblue: I wouldn't be surprised if this the last generation Nintendo differs between it's home console and portable consoles. For the 9th generation I wouldn't be shocked if we saw a Nintendo based device that had the functionality of a tablet that could play video games on the go with a dedicated controller and also connect to a television for a console experience similar to what the nVidia Shield does. I doubt Nintendo would make an Android based tablet/device, even if their titles could only be played on their specific device, but man would that have potential.

For clarity:

GFXBench 3.0 T-Rex only benchmarks OpenGL ES 2.x (this is an old mobile API). It is not a reliable source when benchmarking x86-64 Windows devices such as the Surface Pro 2 or 3.

Here are some more Benchmarks:

Why are we comparing this to Vita on performance grounds? One it's considerably newer. Two it doesn't even fit in the same gaming demographic (it is portable yes, but so is a laptop, neither is really meant for on the go gaming). Three it is more expensive too.

Are you for real.? to spend $800 dollars on a freaking Surface 3 i would build me a R290 PC and be one happy gamer.

Tablets are even worse than laptops, laptops have bigger screen and more powerful hardware as well, but a laptop for gaming is like a console with monitor, you are doom to 1 hardware you can't upgrade and you pay a hell of allot more than you would for a console,in fact a laptop with PS4 like graphics will be easy like $1,000 or $950.

Hell this Nvidia tablets is basically on par with the Surface pro 3 and cost $500 less.

Well that is what you claim not what the benchmark showed....

Hell is android based which mean i can over clock that sh** to the moon, just like the Nexus 7 was over clock from 1.3 to 2.0 ghz and basically smoked the benchmarks back then..

So yeah for $500 freaking less dollars i will say it did great.

It's an interesting device, and I'm surprised at all the praise it's getting (which mostly revolves around the tablet itself). I'd probably refrain from buying one on the count that it's not an x86 Windows device that could run everything I already have.

The benchmark in the first post does not reflect the actual performance of the Surface Pro 2 or Surface Pro 3. The T-Rex benchmark is based on OpenGL ES 2.x and was designed to compare the performance of older ARM based smartphones and tablets.

Even the 3DMark Ice Storm 1.2 Unlimited benchmark only uses up to OpenGL 2.x (for Android and iOS devices) and Direct3D lvl 9_3 (for Windows devices).

I'll take Atari 2600 graphics on a Vita if it means I can avoid gaming on a tablet. It just doesn't work for "real" games. Must have physical sticks and buttons.

The PS Vita has access to a gigantic Sony library encompassing PS1 - PS4 games (either through digital download, remote play, PS Now, etc). You also get Vita exclusives, third party games, and indie. You also get a very portable device that fits easily in your pocket. What do you get with Nvidia Shield tablet? Isn't it $300 plus $60 for controller? And what games do you get? As far as I see from the GS review, it doesn't really play graphically intensive games anyway.

If you include Ps4 and PS Now for the Vita, then the Shield plays the full Steam Library and more.

I'm surprised to see both versions of the Shield so far ahead of the Asus T100 which are at the top of my most wanted mobile list. In some comparison videos I've seen by Digital Foundry it looked like the T100 was easily outperforming in most situations even with higher resolution:
