There’s a reason Nvidia’s CEO directly addressed owners of GTX 1000-series GPUs when revealing the new RTX 3000-series.

Valve has published the August 2020 edition of Steam‘s long-running hardware survey, which catalogues the shares of all the different PC components, operating systems, and VR headsets across the many, many PCs and laptops that run Steam.

As always, there are a couple of interesting data points worth bringing attention to. Nvidia continues to dominate the GPU space with an over 73% share. The GTX 1000-series is far and away the most popular, with GTX 900-series not far behind. The RTX 2000-series, however, has had very little penetration.

Despite its two-year age, RTX 2000-series GPUs amount to less than 11% of Steam’s overall userbase. This is part of the reason why Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang dedicated a section of the RTX 3000-series reveal to essentially convincing GTX 1000 and 900 owners to upgrade. He even spoke to them directly at one point, admitting that the performance gains made by RTX 2000 were not enough to convince everyone to move forward.

On the CPU side of things, quad cores remain the most dominant, at 45.76%, followed by six cores at 25.28%. Having 16GB of RAM also remains the most popular setup, at 41.21%, followed by 8GB at 31.74%.

Elsewhere in the results, 1080p yet again continues to be the dominant resolution, and has in fact grown by 0.07% compared to last month’s survey to now amount to 65.55%. 1440p and 4k both saw growth, and they occupy 6.59% and 2.24% respectively.

https://www.vg247.com/2020/09/07/steam-hardware-survey-nvidia-rtx-2000-gpu-share/

So after all the fights over the new super duper powerful RTX 3000 threads, one thing still very clear, most PC gamers by a land slide still are gaming in 1080p it actually grew a little 65%,1440p and 4K don't even break 10% combined.

And bellow 1080p resolutions combined there is 20.75%.

All this fight is useless most PC gamers steer away from expensive setups like a plague,so even if the xbox and PS5 end under 4k it should be ok after all most of you are under 1440p.

And this is news how? You payed through the eyeballs for ray tracing in 10 games.

The 30 Series will be very popular, especially when the RTX 3060 hits the shelves at $400 or less and still outdoes the consoles.

Pascal to Turning wasn't that much of a leap compare to Ampere. Nvidia wasn't trying hard the last time and this time around, they actually for once listen to PC gamers and demanded more and so Nvidia granted there wish. Ampere will no doubt be a huge hit this time around and the prices are all fair in my opinion just on 3080 & 3070 alone. 3090 is just a take it or leave it.

Sounds like the market is making rational choices? Given Nvidias huge market share it‘s good pc gamers have other means to show their displeasure.

Ti launch prices were exorbitant. If you’re going to charge $500 more for the flagship, the increase had better be substantial if not otherworldly. And comparatively to prior upgrades it wasn’t.

Nvidia seems to have recognized that adoption among 10 series users was very low and want to usher everyone forward ASAP. Consoles will be managing FauxK and they need to ensure that PC’s superiority perception remains intact and within reach.

@Juub1990: It could be a long time before we see RTX 3060 and for now, the 3070 looks to be a solid sweet spot for what its packing and $500 isn't too shabby if you ask me.

$500 is probably still a tad higher than most consumers are willing to pay for. The previous 70 cards that was the most popular of its generation was the 970 and it was $329. The 60's cards are closest to its price range so I believe you'll see the most adoption when a $400 card is made available.

Also, in a rare twist, if the numbers are to be believed, the 3080 offers more performance per $ than the 3070. 40% more expensive for ostensibly 40-50% more performance and 25% more VRAM that is GDDR6X to boot.

Damn 2020 is extra hard for tormeltdowns. While the rest of the world constantly refreshes their browser to check on the progress of vaccine, tormeltdowns has first been stressed with XSX reveal and now Nvidia has shattered what little hopes he had.

True, even considering this particular generational performance leap, $500 for a mid-range card is still quite expensive. I'll be waiting to see what AMD offers in the same performance bracket (if nothing else maybe we'll see NVIDIA drop prices a bit).

For this argument to work, you have to cling to the idea that the PC is just one thing or PC gamers are just one thing.

Where as graphics on consoles is their main selling point, which is why most games only run at 30fps. Where as on the PC, priorities are anything and everything people want.

I'm pretty sure a lot of us already knew this. Turing's sales were lower than Pascals and as of March 2020 about 15 million RTX GPUs have been sold. Your post even points out that many PC gamers didn't upgrade to Turing because the performance jump wasn't big enough. Ampere has the performance jump and value we all wanted so it's adoption rate will definitely be faster than Turing's. It's a good thing that many didn't upgrade to Turing because now with Ampere around the corner many PC gamers can soon upgrade to GPUs 1.5x - 4x more powerful than the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Yeah I'm starting to consider getting a RTX 3080 now, it doesn't seem worth it to save $200 when you get exactly 40% more power for 40% more money. I've been looking at videos of the RTX 2080 Ti playing games at 4k maxed out even OCed and its only able to get 80-90fps average in most of them. The more demanding ones like Metro Exodus and RDR2 just hit the 60fps mark. While a 3080 may be overkill for current games I'm factoring in longevity and how that extra performance will come in handy for future demanding games so I don't have to upgrade sooner and instead later. I don't feel like waiting for a RTX 3070 Ti to come out next year either.

I think we'll get the RTX 3060 in early January. The release dates for Ampere cards are near exactly the same as Turing's. Plus the RTX 3060 will be their mainstream card and I'm certain they don't want to make consumers wait too long for their better selling card. I expect the RTX 3060 to be $300-$350. AMD can definitely compete with an RTX 3060 so I don't expect Nvidia to get comfortable with a $400 price tag, they're already making the Ampere cards cheaper than Turing so they must know AMD has something comparable or in betweens with cheaper price tags.

Only reason I bought a 2000 series is because I was on a 900 series.

If I was on a 1000 series I would not have bothered.

3000 series seems worth it, though. It's a little soon for me personally and I don't have a 4K/ultrawide monitor, so an upgrade is not worth it yet, but those performance gains over the 2000 series are nothing to scoff at.

The 2000 series were a nice meme. It added RT, but couldn't run anything with RT. Oh and lets not forget how much more expensive they were when compared to the 1000 series. Nice joke of a series.

They weren't popular because of the price rise when they announced. The 1080ti costed 799 usd and suddently imagine the 2080 ti costed 1200+. Also dlss was almost in its infancy & till now rtx is supported by very few games.

ah yes this old chestnut of an argument.

1. what matters is that PC gaming gives you options. If you have the money, you can get the best experience. with consoles, you simply don't get that level of flexibility. you can throw your money at the nicest TV and sound system you can find but you'll be stuck with the same console hardware as everyone else holding you back.

2. There are a vast amount of PC gamers out there. So even a small percentage of people using high end cards/resolutions is a very high absolute number of people. A lot of people in those steam hardware surveys only play like one or two non-demanding games and don't care about resolution/performance/using the highest settings.

$500 for 2080TI performance is quite great, alto i feel sorry for the suckers who bite into that 2080ti in recent months only to find the 3070 will probably have the same power for much more less money.

@Random_Matt: Yes I've seen videos and benchmarks with DLSS enabled and disabled. I'm also factoring in the current and future games that will be demanding not have DLSS or even resolution scaling as an option. RDR2 is an example. Assassin's Creed Odyessy only just hits the 60fps mark when maxed out at 4k. I don't expect the 3070 to be that much faster than the 2080 Ti so I find it too close for comfort if I want to play games maxed out at 4k 60fps for at least 2 years.

1-WTF does the xbox has to do with this topic? Does the series X has an secret 2000 series GPU and we miss it?

2-Most people on your platform of choice will play like this gen on inferior hardware, thanks to the cheaper Series S if there is something you can learn from PC is that if you present gamers with 2 choices of hardware and both can play all its games and one is more expensive than the other most people will simply play on the cheaper version.

But i forgot that you some how think that because the xbox one X is out that means every single xbox one S play all its games at the same xbox one X settings, when in reality you are bragging about a product the bast majority of your user base doesn't have.

Most xbox one fans have an inferior experience in fact if the game is not on switch you have the very worse experience.

But i forgot who i was talking to the dude who for years damage control 720p and 900p games on xbox, and that now hype superior versions.

Actually this is not about Ampere is about the RXT 2000 series.

I am planning my self on getting a 3070 unless AMD pulls a miracle with something stronger and cheaper.

You are trying to hard bro, this thread is not attacking the 3000 series,is about the 2000 series not been so popular, and about this notion that even YOU have argue that not all PC gamers have the best hardware.

In fact i even admit to be interested in a 3070,i was planning to get a series X,but a 3070 will play me all xbox games and PC ones, and online is free on PC and gamepass is even cheaper is a win win.😊

@davillain-: Almost like they planned this for just before PS5/XSX. Hold back on the 20's in the last few years of this gen. Then Bam! not a secret Nvidia takes shots at consoles.

Steam surveys are skewed by laptops.

Even I use my cheap student laptop for some steam games.

This thread only exist because you are damage controlling the RTX 3000 inevitable DOMINANCE. 😂🤣

the "most people" argument is so unbelievably weak.

Its about what you yourself have, and nothing more.

The vast majority of PC gamers are broke ass peasants, with dirt cheap mice, rusty old keyboards, sub-1080p LCD junk displays and crappy speakers. That same person has the audacity to refer themselves as 'master race'.

A higher number of PC gamers have a PC that can beat PS4 than the number of PS4 sales.

@zaryia: Top 15 cards are technically more powerful (1050 not so sure) than the PS4.

LOL at this thread

To get the best version of most games you get a PC and spend the money you want to get what you want.

To get the best console version of most games you get Xbox One X or later Xbox Series X.

Since when does the number of items purchase matter when comparing performance?

Too easy man Too easy

I could have written that for you, your so predictable.

It was to easy now share with us how 100% of the xbox user base get a better experience than the PS4 based on the small number of xbox one X sold. 🤣

But but but we account the whole user base as one.🤣🤣🤣

The shock!!! Bad RT support, and overpriced cards. I was fortunate, in that I upgraded from a 1070 to a 2080. However, 3080 will be the card that I actually try some RT.

IDC. 2000 serie failing meant the 3000 series gets their price cut. PC still wins either way.
