With a config as follows:

Amd R9 280x x2 700$

Amd FX8350 200$

midrange mobo 100$

16gb DDR3 ram 80$

Corsair 850w Gold certified psu 120$

Full Tower case 80$

You can:

-max everything possible at full hd probably for the next 4 years

-mine effectively at 1200-1400 kH/s no problem

By doing so in your spare time, you'll recoup the cost of the system (1300$) in 3-4 months tops (if you're unlucky) or a couple months if lucky.

After that... it's all nice tidy profit.

Obviously I'm not suggesting Bitcoins at this point, but there's tons of lesser known and new Crypto currencies launching every other month.

Lots of people got fat doing this, early adopters of Bitcoin now are all millionaires.

A bitcoin was valued about 1$ a year ago, now it's worth 780$.

Litecoin just a few cents, now it's at 20$.

Happy 2014 pc gamers.

China banned bitcoin as have India. It won't be long before the US wants to shut it down.

Bitcoin like services seem too fishy for me to get into.

It sure is the wave of the future (I figure we'll be using Star Trek like Credits when I'm over 50), but those Data Mining coins just feel too "black markety". I don't wanna break bad just yet.

You're not putting money into anything, as you would buy a gaming pc and mine cryptocoins.

If they ban them you'll lose a few bucks in electricity at worst. Boo hoo.

And the EBA has recognized bitcoin and are having talks about taxing transactions.

Alright then. Convince me to mine. I have an Intel 2600K and a GTX780Ti.

@clyde46: fudge off

@farrell2k you don't mine BTC with GPU, haven't for a looong while now. You mine other currencies. As recently as November people were making tons of money off Litecoin with the setup I posted above.

I read about them last night. It's a perfectly legitimate currency, but it's highly risky. At any point people could stop giving them value and they could be useless.

Exactly, the only thing giving them value is demand.. if (better yet, WHEN) that ceases they become worthless.

But... what's to lose? As I said... electricity.

And you can exchange them into dollars/€uro whenever you wish. A guy I know made 300$ last week by mining some new no-name coin then exchanging it into BTC then in USD.. in a couple days.

Due to wild fluctuation in prices.
