Reading the reviews, it appears the recent Atlas Rises patch is responsible for this sudden surge in goodwill. What do you people think? Is it time for PS gamers to crow about this game again?

What's funny is I decided to give the game a shot, never played it before but figured the patch and reading through recent reviews; might as well give it a go. Worst case scenario, I ask for a refund. It was okay, didn't really hook me in like I thought it would. I ended up refunding the game and picked up Tomb Raider instead...
I don't think PS gamers need to be all Sony Fanboyish about it. But space game enthusiasts should rejoice. It's been a great game for awhile now but most didn't know that because their ears were shut after the bad launch and negative uninformed bandwagon hating that seemed to never end.
It's a good game now. Was a mess at launch but the updates have really made it a top-notch space game now. This is what the game should have been at launch, if it launched like this it never would have gotten hate.
Don't know about the pro version but I doubt the ps4 version does this game any justice.
The Pro version is good, runs the game at full 60fps with improved graphics and FauxK.
Mind you, this new update has it's share of bugs at the moment but they will get sorted out. That is the track record they have had thus far with each of their substantial updates. I get the impression they never take a break and work around the clock. It's a labor of love kind of game.
The game is and always will be just a very poor game! I don't ever see myself playing it again.
You're a lemming, you're the least qualified person to be talking about what a good game looks like.
I heard they added a 30 hour story mode, I'm surprised there is so little talk about this (or not that I've see a lot). What's it like? Are the missions just standard fetch quests or is it actually fun and interesting? And is the gameplay in general still centered around endless resource farming?
It's simple: It's only the people who like the game who still play it. Most that hated it, me included, will never touch this pos again
@ArchoNils2:
Er, no. Steam reviews has a strong record of tracking real and significant post-launch improvements. See: Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat X, Dishonored 2, among others.
Indeed, NMS's own recent reviews was "Mixed" at best as recently as a few weeks ago, so your hypothesis doesn't fly. Therefore, if the recent reviews show an improvement, I am inclined to believe the game itself has actually improved.
Id download it again but my download speed is shit so I cant be bothered considering I hated the game before and its probably not worth the download.
So what exactly can you do in it now then? Is the game interesting now? Base building was pointless, combat was shit, so were the weapons, most of the planets were the same ...has any of this changed or is it still the same crap?
@madrocketeer: I didn't even know it was on sale now, I'm even more shock it's still selling $60 even though it's a year old now. Also, I been playing NMS since launch and I been enjoying it since then and still playing it, even the latest update really improve the game more so now.
Pro tip to anyone: Never ever get yourself over hype for any game cause otherwise, you'll be bitching nonestop on the purchase you made.
@pelvist:
Well, here's what are the patch notes for Atlas Rises, at least:
- 30 hours of branching story and deeper lore
- Procedurally generated guild missions
- Much deeper interstellar trading
- Star Systems have varying wealth, conflict and economies
- Overhauled Space combat controls, weapons and AI
- Portal stargates enable quick travel
- Terrain manipulation for more complex bases
- New farming and mining interactions bring increased depth
- Increased biome variety and Rare exotic biomes
- Analysis visor & discovery improvements
- Galaxy map and many other UI improvements
- New S Class ship designs
- Low altitude flight and the ability to crash your ship
- Crashed Freighters to salvage on planets
- Joint exploration
Basically, it seems like they focused on giving actual things to do in the game. Maybe that's the reason for the improved reviews.
@davillain-:
Yup. Hype is the road to disappointment. Investing too much emotions into games can blind you to the games' limitations, and inevitable let-down when the finished product don't meet your sky-high expectations. These are lessons I learned a long time ago.

Oh my God those Lizardmen look so awesome!!! Insta-freaking-buy!
I just picked this up on Steam, but I gotta say, it's pretty boring still. It's not so much the content, but the actual gameplay or mining resources.
Hello games blew it. I don't see the point in releasing a patch like this. They wasted all their initial hype, and it's doubtful this patch will result in the game sales they could have had if the game launched for the first time today.
It's a lot better game than it was at launch. Still not worth $60, Hello Games still screwed up massively with their hype, and the game still lacks a lot of features they showcased or said would be in the game.
I rebought it for $25 on GoG (before I saw it on Steam, grrr), and I don't regret it. If you're a fan of space games it'll appeal more to you than if you want more structured affairs. It's still not fantastic and has technical issues that really bother me (the pop in specifically), but the terrain generation is a lot better than it was and the game has lot more features than it did.
Hello Games has been doing a great job improving the game
I don't think they deserve any praise for improving their game 1 year after release. Less hate, maybe.
this hasn't been the first improvement they've implemented since launch. They also issued refunds after the initial launch, the price of the game has severely decreased. I think it is commendable that they didn't just throw in the towel at the beginning, I bet a lot of other gaming companies would
So the game was really was an early access release all along. If it had released as such on steam it would have done far better. Those people love playing unfinished wank.
I bought then refunded this when it came out, but I'm itching to try it again after all the updates. heard lots of good things
EDIT: just noticed it was on sale on steam and picked it up again. should be giving it a go tonight
NMS always was a good game, and enjoyable game. It had a bit of a rocky launch, but objectively that's the only real issue it had.
Subjectively, people had way too high standards and admittedly some promises were made that exaggerated. It's a fun, relaxing, open-ended game that does not warrant the criticism it has received, however.
I think the "recent" reviews are actually all the reviews a few months+ after the release and initial shock/rage wore off; everyone was on the hate train at first, everyone gave it a negative review at first...now people are relaxing a bit and realizing that "Hey, it's a good game"
I just picked up the game and have put in a dozen or so hours and can confirm that it is indeed awesome. I held off since launch, waiting for content. It took a while, but it was definitely worth the wait. There is a ton to do, the universe feels full and alive, and the story is enigmatically mesmerizing. So far my only criticism are bugs here and there, but nothing too big. Great game.

good to hear, looking forward to jumping back in tonight
Got back in last night for the first time since launch and yea its a huge improvement. Looks and runs so much better on PC compared to launch, way less buggy. We'll see if it holds my interest in the long run but I'm impressed with how much this has improved.
@Wasdie: NMS has much more content now than it was ever promised (base building, survival, permadeath and creative modes, capital ships, ground vehicles, story and side missions, etc). It also has more content than most AAA games out there.
Sean Murray wasn't honest, but it's clear now that this was his vision for the game in the long term. But yeah, for a brilliant guy like him, he wasn't smart enough to predict something as basic as the consequenses of overhype.

Get out of here man, the game dips alot to 20-30fps for sure, 60fps almost never besides in the stations. Almost no improvement with the graphics and it makes your pro heat up so bad that you can bake eggs on it.
I tried to get back into it but this game is dull as ****, I almost fell asleep while playing last time.

It still would have gotten hate for the price, reasonably so as well.

You're right. $60 was too much for the game $20 or $30 would have been better.

$14.99 in the state it launched, $29.99 if it launched in the state it's in now.

Right. Whatever. I'm just noting a clear improvement in the game. What that improvement actually means to individual people is your business, and not my concern.
