Nintendo Co. plans to debut an upgraded model of its Switch console next year along with a lineup of new games, people familiar with the matter said, ceding 2020’s holiday spotlight to rival devices from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

The specifications of the new machine have yet to be finalized, though the Kyoto-based company has looked into including more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics, people briefed on the strategy told Bloomberg News, asking not to be identified because it’s private. Nintendo faces stiff competition for gamers’ attention this fall as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to arrive in time for the shopping season.

The release of the upgraded Switch would be coupled with, or followed by, a slew of games from Nintendo itself and related outside studios, the people said. Those games would address a wide range of players, from casual gamers seeking small doses of escapism to more devoted fans putting in marathon gaming sessions. The focus on next year’s pipeline explains Nintendo’s relatively quiet software release schedule so far this year, the people said.

Why would they do that? Its on the go. Nintendo fans enjoy their games in 540-720p in 19fps 😊

There is simply no need to upgrade the system. If it performs at 9fps, that's fine, because the advantage of a Switch is being able to play vidya games on the go 😊😊😊

Just make sure 1080p/60fps is the bottom line minimum. It's 2020, 30fps should be dead and buried by now and as powerful as handhelds are now capable of running games in 60fps.

If current switch cannot play games on this rumored switch pro due to power differences then it is a different product than switch right?

That kinda power on a battery doesn’t sound likely. Could this be a new dock? Nintendo will need to do something in the next couple years hardware wise to keep their current 3rd party support. I just don’t see how they make a 1080p+ screen with a big enough jump in horse power while keeping the handheld functionality. And really, that functionality is a bigger bullet point than and resolution bump.

As long as the games work on the regular Switch, I won't be bothering. Even if it's a successor, I might not buy it. The only Nintendo IPs missing from Switch is Star Fox, Crusin' and FZerofor me. I also wish MS would allow Killer Instinct on the Switch.

What does Nintendo have lined up for the Switch, anyways? I can't think of anything else besides Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4.

I tried to forget those games exist.

I’m kind of sceptical about this myself as I think they would be better just to go straight into a Switch 2 in 2022. However the Switch is still very hot so maybe they want to ride it out a bit longer.

Either way I’d get a Switch Pro if it comes out next year.

I will say switch has been kinda meh for a year now. They have vastly improved over the previous couple generations though. Keep bringing franchises on to the system please nintendo!

Yea it's been a weird year for Nintendo. I have a feeling there was going to be more but I think COVID put a wrench in their plans.

As long as I can still play new games, I am okay with the current one, don't play them on my 4K television anyways so fine with portable mode.

It will probably be an upgrade akin to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, rather than a Switch 2.

I will believe it once it is officially confirmed by Nintendo. Other than that, I will take what I read with a grain of salt.

If they release a stronger and faster version of the Switch that is a stand alone at home console I am more than ok with that. Call it a Switch pro + series N if you want to. It would be a day one buy from me. I would simply put that in my bedroom and give my current switch to my kids. I play it docked 99.99999% of the time.

Still waiting on the day Nintendo decide to grow up and develop a proper powerful next gen console...they've made enough money on handheld kiddy shit over the years to finally come out with one.

Nintendo is using Nvidia like tech. Why wouldn't the new Switch not play games in better framerates? Xbox Series X however can play games in 60fps "if" developers choose to do so.

If so, just gimme up to 1440p docked. Ninty does like to shoot for 60, so that could be non-viable. Games like Xeno 2 are well deserving of a res bump, even though the game wasn't quite as good as XC.

Maybe P5R will come to the Pro 😮

@hardwenzen: I’m playing games on PC at 4k@60fps, but honestly it is nice but not a major leap. Nintendo understand this and continue to innovate in hardware and games, you mock them but the sales tell you what the market is right now. Mainstream gamers have moved away from graphics because every game looks good even on switch

They just made a statement to the effect of saying they're ramping up output for next year. They've been coming out with good stuff but they hit that Nintendo dry spell again, even with a new wildly successful platform.

Lets be honest, this is Nintendo we're talking about. We will be lucky if this mythical Switch 2 is on par with the VCR Xbox One. Good luck with any kind of 4K with that, even DLSS requires some level of competent hardware.

Couldn't disagree more. We're not talking about 720/60fps on a Switch, no. We're talking about a bunch of games being below 720p (720p native is laughable enough as is in 2020 EVEN on a tiny screen the Switch has) AND way below 30fps, which is already a bare minimum. The condition a lot of games come out on the Switch should never be even sold to the public, their performance is pre alpha like.

Nintendo + 4k = fake

They lose me at 4K. Everything else in the report makes sense, but there is no way a Switch Pro will be 4K. Best case scenario it's about on par with the vanilla XBone, and even that's a stretch.

It's shit that they haven't made any announcements for the whole summer, I know it's because of the epidemic, but come on.
