Those are some pretty big increases. Switch is definitely a success so far.

Nintendo is projecting 20M Switch units shipped and a whopping 100M Switch software shipped in FY2018 (April 2018-March 2019), which would bring LTDs as of April 1st 2019 to 37.79M hardware and 168.97M software. Pretty big aspirations. They likely have big plans for the second half of the year.

What are your thoughts? Is Switch doing well? Will it meet expectations for this FY? To those of you who predicted a massive dropoff this year, has your mind been changed? What are your predictions for Switch in the next 12 months?

As a Switch owner I'm very happy, of course, but the first half of this year has been severely lacking.

Maybe we've been spoiled by the constant stream of good games last year, but so far I've only bought Skyrim and Celeste in 2018. Most games I want will release this summer, very close to each other. However, I firmly believe the console will keep doing well especially with the upcoming summer titles and Wii U ports.

Plus, Pokemon, Metroid Prime 4 and Smash are going to be absolutely huge.

@Sgt_Crow: Absolutely agree. Q1 this year on Switch has not been interesting as far as retail releases go. The best the year has had to offer is ports of Bayonetta 1 + 2. Celeste is also very good. I liked that game.

I highly doubt that Prime 4 will release this or sell more than 2 million. Fire Emblem is a pretty big seller though so that should help. The thing about Nintendo is that they often sell over half of their hardware and software for the year during the holiday quarter.

That said, I'm still not sure on them shipping 20 million this FY. I think they should have started with a prediction of 18 million and increased it later if necessary. If they miss that 20 million, it's gonna hurt them a lot even though they'll still be making bank.

Pokemon will give it a boost. but honestly people also need to understand that mario and zelda have been in development probably for wii-u already for ages before they got dumped on the switch and its release window.

I personally think if they do not release pokemon this year or drop the price for a cheaper version the console is going to tank.

They probably will release pokemon this year no matter what and drop the price next year or even get a revision going.

It's ahead by over 600k launch-aligned, even though it's 1.5 million behind in Japan. Switch is only doing okay in Japan but quite good overseas it seems. Also, you're really desperate trying to say this every time.

I've felt like we're in a games drought since Mario Odyssey- but I also did not get Xenoblade or Kirby. That's ok though- content to play Stardew Valley and Mario Kart 8. This year I plan to pick up Shovel Knight, Donkey Kong, Captain Toad, Crash Trilogy, Pokemon, Smash, and Metroid Prime 4.

Also would love Mario Maker

Sure I supposed, but I don't think it would be fair to try and assume Switch will catch up PS4 since PS4 release late in 2013 and Switch release early 2017.

Yeah that's true amigo. If it does it'll probably take a long time to do so. I'm just thinking if it keeps selling well and Sony release a new console in 2020 or so, then the Switch may have a chance of catching up with the PS4 eventually. That's assuming Nintendo don't end up bringing out a new console themselves for a while of course.

Nintendo has gotten back in the game. Those estimates might see fruition if Smash releases this year because so far we don't know much if what is coming this fall and beyond. Hopefully E3 delivers. If P4 releases next year I can see good things coming.

They mention sold-through quite often when they're doing well, actually. It's just that this is an earnings release, so they'll only mention sold-in since that's when Nintendo makes money. The same happens for Sony, as you'll see tomorrow. Nintendo will probably give sell-through again sometime this summer after they cross the 20 million mark. It should be around 16 million right now.

PS4 sold 20.2 million last year worldwide and that's more than the Switch is selling.

They definitely need to hurry up and release some games. The only exclusive with a release date for this year so far is Octopath. They're going to need more than that if they expect the sales train to keep on rolling.

PS4 is a 4th year console that can frequently be found at retailers for cheaper than the Switch.

It doesn't matter, its sales aren't slowing down, instead they are picking up thanks to Sony's games output. They sold 20.2 million last year and the previous year they sold 18 million. Sales are increasing for PS4 with no apparent end in sight.

Definitely impressive... will be interesting to see if they can keep up the momentum going forward, without a mainline Mario or Zelda game on the horizon.

The switch will never outsell the GameCube. Flop.

Nintendo doesn't do price drops on hardware until a few years have passed, while first party games never get a price cut.

I'm buying every AAA/AAAA Wii U port since I never owned a Wii U. I imagine most Switch owners never owned a Wii U.

Point is, the goalposts will always be moved for the Switch since it's a Nintendo console. This system is obviously selling and at the LEAST it'll sell about 110 million systems.

A quick note on US console sales in March

It's unsurprising that Hardware sales volume in the US was down 30% YoY and software sales was down 18% due to a harsh comparison against March 17 when the Switch was released.

The relative sales volumes of game hardware was:
