Nintendo today reported its latest financial results for the three-month period. The company has provided more information about how the Nintendo Switch is doing as well as the overall company.

During the first quarter of this period (April through June 2020), for Nintendo Switch, sales started out strong, with sales of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, released in May, reaching 1.32 million units, and Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, released in June, selling 1.03 million units. Titles released in previous fiscal years have also continued to sell well, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons at the top of the list with sales of 10.63 million units (for cumulative sales of 22.40 million units).

Sales of this title continue to be strong with no loss of momentum, contributing greatly to the overall growth in software sales. In addition, sales of titles from other software publishers continued to grow steadily, bringing the total number of million-seller titles during this period to nine, including titles from other software publishers. COVID-19 created some difficulties in procuring the parts required for manufacturing Nintendo Switch consoles, but the overall production situation has almost recovered.

As a result of these factors, hardware and software sales both rose on a year-on-year basis, with hardware sales reaching 5.68 million units (166.6% increase on a year-on-year basis), and software sales reaching 50.43 million units (123.0% increase on a year-on-year basis).

Turning to our digital business for dedicated video game platforms, sales increased as a result of the good momentum of downloadable versions of packaged software for Nintendo Switch, and also the popularity of The Isle of Armor, released on June 17 as part of Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass and Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, the first-ever add-on content for the Pokémon series.

Download-only software and Nintendo Switch Online also sold well, with digital sales reaching 101.0 billion yen (229.9% increase on a year-on-year basis).

For the mobile business, many consumers continue to enjoy applications that were released in previous fiscal years, and our mobile, IP related income reached 13.2 billion yen (32.7% increase on a year-on-year basis).

Total sales reached 358.1 billion yen, with overseas sales of 273.0 billion yen accounting for 76.3% of the total. Operating profit came to 144.7 billion yen, ordinary profit was 150.3 billion yen, and net profit attributable to owners of parent totaled 106.4 billion yen for this quarter.

– Switch sales for the quarter: 3.05 million

– Switch Lite sales for the quarter: 2.62 million

– Overall Switch sales for the quarter: 5.68 million

– Switch software sales for the quarter: 50.43 million

– Switch lifetime sales: 52.62 million

– Switch Lite lifetime sales: 8.81 million

– Overall lifetime Switch hardware sales: 61.45 million

– Switch lifetime software sales: 406.67 million

– Switch hardware forecast for this fiscal year: 19 million

– Switch software forecast for this fiscal year: 140 million

– Nintendo net sales this quarter: 358,106 million yen

– Nintendo operating income this quarter: 144,737 million yen

– Nintendo net profit this quarter: 106,482 million

– Nintendo net sales forecast: 1,200,000 million yen

– Nintendo operating income forecast: 300,000 million yen

– Nintendo net profit forecast: 200,000 million yen

I look at that list of games, and god damn, do they pale in comparison to Sony's exclusives or what. Not even one realistic game on the whole list.

Ooff just shy of PS4 2019 Q1 with 3.2m shipment. Hope they still have momentum next year against the new consoles.

But damn I think Nintendo games account for half of the total shipment for the quarter, amazing numbers for Nintendo but 3rd party had to fight for the rest.

Proves that gameplay and accessibility is all you need to entertain people. Well done Nintendo and may they continue to buck the trend with unique gaming solutions compared to the competition.

I don't think Nintendo can either. The game has been supply constrained for ages. They cannot make them fast enough. To it's credit it does what it does very very well.

Also great to see Xenoblade break 1 million. hopefully it's sales has a long tail too. Brilliant game.

If i was nintendo i would be a bit disappointed in pokemon though. yeah on the one hand 18+ million...its not to shabby. its made a few quid.

but i dont think it has had a positive effect on pokemons reputation. its the first main pokemon that can be played on the TV as well as on the go and it just sorta went...plop. a big plop 18milion sales plop but still....plop. It should be the switches top seller. i mean its frickin pokemon.

hopefully gamefreak and nintendo managed to hear the sense of disappointment above the sound of clanging coins ringing in their ears.

Imagine being so desperate to troll that you pick an arbitrary year to compare to and just ignore one of the models. I guess your argument for leaving out Switch Lite but not PS4 Pro is that you somehow consider Lite to be a different console?

Oh, and that's not even mentioning the fact that Switch is supply constrained in all of its biggest markets while PS4 wasn't at all last year.

And they still give us Pikmin 3 again instead of Pikmin 4. For 60 bucks. No Metroid. Or F-Zero. Or Donkey Kong. Or lots of other shit they could be doing. But hey, here's Tropical Freeze again, a several years old game, for 60 bucks. Make a new Mario Kart? Nah, we could just sell the one we did last time again. For full price, of course. Those few Wii U supporters we had? Lol, **** them.

Nintendo is probably the masters of missed opportunities. But at the same time, I understand why they aren't bettering themselves. They sell a lot. Why put in effort where it isn't needed?

@hardwenzen: thrn you look at the sales and these games sell more than Sony exclusives even at a higher price in a shorter time frame. Stay salty.

Why do people even care about sales ? Does this benefits you ? I would understand if you bought shares of these companies only...

Healthy company means they stay in business making stuff people like. When sales decline, you can expect the quality to go down with it unless the company takes huge risks.

To a certain extent sales of a console are important for ensuring that it continues to receive decent software support. If we look at the Wii U or the PS Vita, many developers simply ignored them as making games for those particular platforms wasn't really worth the effort due to the low install base.

First off, being how secretive Nintendo is, we don't really know what it is working on nor what is planned this holiday season.

A missed opportunity would be failing to bring good games from a small user base console as Wii U to the Switch currently having five times the users. Business-wise the rationale is solid as P3 will be geared towards those who wanted to try the game and were unable or those who just passed on it.

Meanwhile PS4 only has one (GTA V), and Xbone doesnt even have a 10+ million seller. Lol

well GTAV is amulti so in that case i think call of duty MW and nba 2k 20 and madden 20 probably sold 20M on playstation. those games are the top3 selling playstation franchise games.

It is a rarity to see an exclusive game sell at least twenty million copies worldwide. In fact, most games do not even sell at least ten million copies worldwide.

@svaubel: if major 3rd party games were on the switch at true current gen performance then half of those sells wouldnt exist.

A proper cod alone would cut into half of those sells.

They literally have nothing else to play but those games aaa wise so im actually surprised the sells aren't higher.

wrong call of duty black ops 2 was on wiiU at launch and the graphics were the same as the ps3/360 it also had motion control aiming ability. it sold only 1 million nintendo exclusives hugely outsold it.

people associate nintendo with mario and playstation/xbox with call of duty/battlefield/sports etc

call of duty lead platform could be announced for switch 2 by activision and people would still buy the xbox/playstation version instead.

its just the way it is.

If only Nintendo had a subscription service like GamePass, maybe they could reach a respectable audience size with their software.

Sorry Nintendo, your financial results are invalid. Only dollars made selling emotional 3rd person action adventures are real, science says. Plus Nintendo is Doomed, they should just give up according to SWs expert analysts.

@KBFloYd: I doubt it had the same performance. When did the wiiu come out again? Wasn't it at the end of the 360/ps3 era ?

Wasn't the wiiu online service crap ?

Like I said if the performance and accebilty was the same as ps/xb , the switch's 1st party games would see a major change in sales

People get lazy and play cod all year with friends only buying 1 or 2 extra games a year.

Add in battlefield, destiny and sports games at the same level and that 50 percent decrease in attach rate would definitely occur.
