Nintendo Switch requires weekly online check-in to play NES games

You'll need to connect your Nintendo Switch to the internet every seven days to keep playing your NES games.

The Virtual Console-style catalogue of retro classics comes as part of Nintendo Switch's upcoming online subscription. But you'll need to remember to connect at least every week in order to guarantee access - even if your subscription is a long way from expiring.

If you have an online subscription you're likely to be playing online regularly, although maybe you're heading on holiday? Or maybe you only play on the bus without internet and are subscribing just to play retro games?

Nintendo's method is different to how PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games with Gold titles work on PS4 and Xbox One. Both Sony and Microsoft let you play offline as long as you like if the games are downloaded to your "home" console.

And here's another wrinkle. Nintendo will not keep your cloud save data if your online subscription runs out.

Sounds like what MS tried to do in 2013 but its okay since this is Nintendo.

Years and years I've been hearing good Nintendo won't charge for online. Mind you, cows spouted the same nonsense. But Nintendo, out of them all, has been extra cancer.

It actually sounds worse. Even if you're paying up $$$ they will screw you over lol

Stamping round closing emulator websites, a shitty service that offers pretty much, nothing. And now the only thing Nintendo fanboys were praising is essentially a prisoner with a gun to it's head.

But yea, you're right, Nintendo goobers will defend this shit.

I think my Switch is connected pretty much 24/7. Not to and from work, which is about 2 hours a day. So that's not a problem. And I have never had a Nintendo system break (I've owned them all except Virtual Boy), and I highly doubt my Switch will, so I don't really care about the cloud saving.

I have a shitload of other problems with their online though.

Worse than this is the way they shut down rom sites because some "Pirates" that can't afford their game might play their game instead of buying a mini console.

Kind of lame that you have to log in at least once every seven days to keep playing those games that they provide for subscribing to the service but not really that big of a deal in my opinion. Surely they could have done it a better way though but whatever.

I’m most concerned with the cloud saves getting erased. However if all game saves are done both locally and on the cloud simultaneously then I guess this shouldn’t really be an issue either.

no remember the 24 hour ping check in microsoft wanted to check in like every 24 hours or you were locked out of your games or something.

MICROSOFT was gonna do something like this people must have forgotten it or something thats why some people went playstation because they don't have internet access like on nuclear submarines if they wanted to play xbox one they couldn't check in and they said buy a 360 if you don't have internet access its an offline device!

Let me get this straight....the Virtual Console is now formally dead, correct? The only way I can gain access to Nintendo's legacy now is through a subscription to their online service that affords abysmal features, and games that will be taken back upon its cessation? They just keep outdoing themselves. It's like they make an effort to do worse and worse as time goes on.

I never understood anyone getting the Switch. Each to their own like. But this just makes me wonder even more.

What is the point of a Switch?

If someone gave me money to buy a Switch, I'd rather go out and spend it on a PS Vita.

So not only do they delete your cloud saves if your sub expires but they require weekly check-ins in order to keep your nes games?

sounds like $20 well spent..........

Well, it offers mostly the same.

Online play, discounts on games, and a free game or two every month or so.

Voice chat is negligible. So what's missing, group chat options I suppose, trophies?

Free NES games on the Switch for 20 bucks.

That is like PS4 getting PS1 games for Plus.

You are insane to think that the price can negate all the issues it has.

Ok, the service is cheap. Then why isn't the console and the games cheap? You can get an Xbox and 1 year of Gold for the price of a Switch.

On the system, sure. It breaks, you lose it all unless you are subscribed to Nintendo's online. There's no reason why they couldn't offer an SD card option.

I only really play my Switch when I go out of town but have been wanting to play it at home.

But check ins?
