Cause someone has to balance out the anti sony threads.

Gaf link(link)

Source

"What can we expect next at Microsoft?
Ballmer has committed to fight to the death in his effort to defend & extend Windows. So expect death as resources are poured into the unwinnable battle to convert users from iOS and Android.
As resources are poured out of the company in the Quixotic effort to prolong Windows/Office, any hope of future dividends falls to zero.
Expect enormous layoffs over the next 3 years. Something like 50-60%, or more, of employees will go away.
Expect closure of the long-suffering on-line division in order to conserve resources.
The entertainment division will be spun off, sold to someone like Sony or possibly Barnes & Noble, or dramatically reduced in size. Unable to make a profit it will increasingly be seen as a distraction to the battle for saving Windows and Microsoft leadership has long shown they have no idea how to profitably grow this business unit.
As more and more of the market shifts to competitive cloud infrastructure Apple, Amazon, Samsung and others will grow significantly. Microsoft, losing its user base, will demonstrate its inability to build a new business in the cloud, mimicking its historical failures with Zune (mobile music) and Microsoft mobile phones. Microsoft server and tool sales will suffer, creating a much more difficult profit environment for the sole remaining profitable division."

"Microsoft makes more than 75% of its profits from Windows and Office. Less than 25% comes from its vaunted servers and tools. And Microsoft makes nothing from its xBox/Kinect entertainment division, while losing vast sums in its on-line division (negative $350M-$750M/quarter). No matter how much anyone likes the non-Windows Microsoft products, without the historical Windows/Office sales and profits Microsoft is not sustainable."

"Game over. Ballmer loses. And if you keep your money invested in Microsoft it will disappear along with the company."

Red highlighted to keep it SW related!

I somehow doubt that Microsoft is losing a ton of money on an online division that requires a $60 a year cost of admission. Isn't Forbes the general news version of Kotaku?

1. Micrsoft is nowhere near doomed in any way, shape, or form.

2. The idea that the Xbox brand (and the entire entertainment division, for that matter) will be sold to Barnes and Noble is ludicrous, and the idea that it will be sold to Sony, who is losing money like it's going out of style and can't even support their own goddamn console brand properly, much less someone else's, is beyond laughable.

Interesting that you capitalized all of Sony's letters... Seems like you're trying to communicate that they you think they're better, on a higher level, or more powerful than the other two. Am I right in my assertion?

Steve Synofski was by far the worse culprit here compared to ballmer. The doom and gloom is a load of crap and this article isn't even accurate the gaming division IS profiting. all underwhelming reports (despite company growth) lumped Xbox, Windows phone and bing all into one... im sure xbox stands on its own 2 feet compared to the other 2. All in all, all it takes is one major upgrade in this new expected "around april time" Project "windows blue" to fix most of the usability issues of windows 8 to make that start selling alot. People seem to forget how long it took android to get its act together. and it only sold as much as it did because it was the first "low and high end" mobile operating system which anyone can buy a cheap one of.

Um just because they have more money doesnt guarantee them a profit as the article just stated. Why would MS bother with something that doesnt make them money compared to their more profitable products? Lol @ Lems thinking MS rules the market because they have the deepest pockets, sorry, doesnt work that way.

Id say thats pretty much game...set...match. every company that deals in technology is technically "doomed" as we all put it... technology shifts so fast that as ideas are introduced old ideas flake out... that industry is always in flux. Doesnt mean they wont adapt....

You know what I take from that article? The first sentance:

"After years of product stagnation, and a big market shift toward mobile devices from PCs, Microsofts future relied on the company seeing customers demonstrate they were ready to jump in heavily for Windows8 products including the new Surface tablet."

I argued for days in another thread saying that PCs were on the way out, hermits were all over me like flied on cow dung.

Where I think Hartung got it wrong was with the Entertainment division (which, BTW, includes their tablet).

MS has been betting for years that consoles, or devices like them, will be in every home. The idea is, they may replace PCs; or at the very least serve as the media center for the 21st century - that's why they got into the console race in the first place. I don't see them moving from that strategy. With tech like smartglass, I think they are going to try and merge the new tablet market with smartphones and consoles. That is just my opinion, though...

It's surprising to hear that MS is losing money on Xbox

How can that be?

With all the ads and XBL fees, how can they still be losing money on it?

Anyway

I still love my 360 and will use it for a big chunk of my gaming, whether I get a 720 is up in the air until I see it.

Yes. They've just been biding their time. Watching and waiting in the shadows for years and years intentionally screwing up many of their beloved franchise just to lull everyone into a false sense of security until finally BAM! Sega watches the big 3 crumble and proceeds to release the Sega Nightmarecast Jupiter Drive System. It has no competition and sells more units than the PS2.

This opinion is correct and the very reason for windows 8 existance. desktops will not dissapear solely because people want the choice of maximum power that these lesser devices will never offer in the same timeframe. Hybrid Computers, when windows 8 becomes fleshed out with version updates peoples idiotic "OMG IT MUST SUCCEED STRAIGHT AWAY DESPITE BEING A MONSTEROUS TASK" will disapear and the windows eco-system will be so much better than what the competition offers across the bored. An app shortage and usability issues are temporary problems, outdated eco-systems and console designs are major problems.
