I'm thinking Gaikai will be used for some kind of PS+ feature and BC. ;)

Nikkei: PS4 to utilize Gaikai, have expanded social features

Another PlayStation 4 report, this time from Nikkei.PS4-Nikkei_02-06.jpg

PlayStation 4 concept by Hesit8in.

According to the Japanese outlet, the network function of PlayStation 4 will be expanded, including a new social feature where you can exchange opinions among your friends while playing games.

The system is said to utilize Gaikai cloud technology, which Sony purchased for $380 million in the summer of last year.

Echoing previous reports, the outlet claims the Sony developed Cell chip loaded onto the PlayStation 3 will not be included in PlayStation 4, and that itll arrive by the holidays.

PlayStation 4 is expected to be revealed during PlayStation Meeting 2013 in New York City on February 20. Its controller will supposedly have a touch pad.

I wouldn't doubt Gaikai tech being used from the start but I don't expect cloud gaming for a few years. It's not easy implementing something like that across a large network like PSN.

Always on DRM. Also since the hardware is differnet than the PS3 how is it going to be Backward Compatibility. One way could be Stream PS3 games.

It probably won't be available to all PS3 owners without a subscription. It'll just be an alternative distribution method to digital/retail for gamers that want to use it.

Good.

What I see making or breaking PS4 next gen is not raw tech, but online.

Sony needs to make the PS4 a social hub device with PSN at its core with additional online components like Google TV & Gaikai.

I'd love to see the PS4 integrated with the Android app store.

Emulation.  Like the Xbox 360.

I honestly believe BC will only come as a result of being a PS+ member over cloud-streaming.  Seems like a pretty good hook to push the service.

Is the PS4 going to be powerful enough to emulate the PS3 hardware.

I could see a separate fee for BC. Download a certain amount of BC games a month at a small PS+ fee. It could definitely work.

Unless MS changes it after the outcry it's about to get.

Some of Gaikai's features may be free. Gaikai was actually mainly used to allow people to demo games in real time. Research shows that people are more willing to buy games if they play it first, which would be a great incentive for publishers. I could imagine Sony allowing people to demo games straight from the PSN Store for free but the full cloud gaming aspect would most likely remain a PSN+ subscription or some sort of new subscription.

Well DRM could be part of their plan to integrate Windows 8 as well. Maybe that's why their pushing DRM.

Didn't someone from Sony tweet that they had a Wii U and tweeted his username telling people to add him. Even said that it was for research?

true on games, I was just thinking that, though they should have no problem attracting third parties which consumers should be content with, but in order to make up for any losses on production and distribution costs their going to need to make money selling their own games, I'm interested in seeing what they have up their sleeves for the PS4/Orbis

The VITA has a bunch of PSN network connected features that never existed on the servers before (i.e. party chat, live area, etc).

Emulation.

Basinboy

Emulation =/= sorcery. There's no way to emulate the PS3 or the 360; the hardware to pull of such a feat simply isn't available yet.
