Both games look like something I would be interested in. Which is the better Platinum experience?
Nier: Automata, not even close. I've actually been chipping away at Astral Chain since September. It doesn't grab me like Nier: Automata, which I finished in only three days.
I haven't played Astral Chain yet, but Nier Automata is one of the best games I've ever played, so I'd definitely recommend it.
Both are fantastic, but I'd give the edge to Nier Automata.
But Astral Chain is definitely worth your time too.
Neir left me feeling very flat. In fact I still can't believe the game is asking me to play for dozens and dozens of hours before it supposedly gets good.... I guess if you have the time?
For me, it had a very bland open world with lots of walls, subpar gameplay and the same enemies over and over. It became a shlog to play through.
Apparently if you stay with it for a very long time something good happens, but I was bored after the initial play through. I wasn't gonna play it through 4 more times to get to some answers.
I did not find Neir interesting. Still trying to grasp what is the appeal.
For me it's the way it uses gameplay to tell a story in a way only a videogame can (Metal Gear Solid 1/2 style), and the themes surrounding existential dread. But it's definitely an aquired taste and I can understand why people wouldn't "get it".
If by "Platinum experience" you mean the game that more closely follows the gameplay standards of their iconic past games then Astral Chain. Then again I feel that their peak is a thing of the past and everything recent has been below that. If you just want a good game Nier: Automata is by far a better game for reasons aside of the "platinum experience". It has a really well crafted world with characters, locations, themes and story beyond what Astral Chain offers.
If you literally just want pure action gameplay and don't care even remotely about the window dressings then you could probably say Astral Chain.
But if you care even the slightest micro ounce about story, art, sound design, theming, or using gameplay as a medium, then Nier is the much better choice, and by a pretty wide margin the better overall experience.
