"As reported by Inverse, a slate of recently surfaced patents and trademarks filed by Sony reveal a number of details and prototype pictures of the PS5's equivalent PSVR headset, which will apparently cost $250 in the US, boast eye and head tracking technology, and can even run wirelessly with up to five hours of battery life.

If you're one for the granularity of VR specs, these patents also suggest that Sony is aiming for a 560-by-1,440 resolution with the PS5's new headset, alongside a 120-hertz refresh rate, and a 220-degree field of view.

Earlier this year, another leak suggested Sony may be developing a VR glove with haptic feedback, which - when paired with the head and eye tracking capabilities of this rumoured headset - could create some of the most immersing virtual reality games yet. "

What do think about this, SW? Do you think this is all true? Are you hyped for it?

I definitely think I will be investing in PSVR next gen. I expect to see a huge generational leap.

I find the vr tech space more interesting than the same ol same ol on the consoles. Not saying all the games are bad, but just boring to me.

Im still yet to try vr. Id imagine wireless is a must, but the next gen sony will still be a sit down unit?

If next gen VR has haptic feedback it will be a great jump. I got my Oculus back in 2016 and had my mind blown but I really hope next gen can get rid of the screen door effect it really can kill the immersion. But even with that said there has been moments in VR where I experienced presence that still stick in my mind today I can't wait to see what next gen will bring.

Don’t know if this is true or not but this doesn’t really move my interest in VR at all. It’s just not something that I want to use to play games with at all.

Yep. Sony is going all out on PSVR. They have grown a solid fanbase, and are following it up with extensive VR support going into next gen. That's what happens when you're a smart company with a successful peripheral.

Standalone, methinks. The most glaring issue (rather, the most tedious) with PSVR is the mess of wires required to have it up and running. It's a major eyesore for a living space.

But all in all good news. Now all that remains is developing the right IP for the mainstream to latch onto.

BS it won't cost $250 for all those specs. Maybe in 2023.

Yeah, the specs are freakin' badass. I expect the price to definitely be higher than $250. High-end VR headsets ain't cheap.

What the frack is 560 x 1440 resolution. That obviously can't be right, unless the article is missing a digit (i.e. 2560 x 1440).

I might be on board. Been thinking about getting the current VR even as it stands. I actually kind of regret not getting this past Christmas when it was <$200 as a bundle, because what the heck. Hopefully this new one keeps 3D support as well. As I'd actually probably use it for 3D movie playback, esp if i could get full HD resolution in each eye. One of the issues that turned me off of the current PSVR is it's not full HD.

This is incredibly difficult to believe and I call bullshit. Even top end VR doesn’t approach such capabilities and is FAR from the $250 mark.

Wireless? Eye tracking? Mmm-hmmm.

A 5% attach rate is successful to you lol. You must cry yourself to sleep at night.

I remember reading the patent. The thing's a beast.

I'm thinking around $400-$500, but don't expect a release date of 2020/21. Sony already said that the new VR headsets won't be out till a while after the ps5 (whether they do what they say is a different story though).

Not going to happen. VR barely even registers with gamers. It's never going mainstream.

Yeah, definitely. And honestly, it's better that way. The PS5 will give the current PSVR a huge boost, as the headset is powered externally, by the console. So regardless of when the PSVR2 comes out, we'll see a big difference in graphical quality, fps, clarity, etc. Gives Sony more time to perfect the next headset.

Same old Sony, copying the tech/trend pioneered by PC.

i'm guessing that there is a typo with the resolution.

a good wireless headset tethered to the PS5 in the same way the wiiu gamepad was tethered to the wiiu console would be great though.

i just cant see how they will have 120FPS streaming with a good display and all the bits and bobs (hopefully an improved controller) for 250 bucks unless sony are willing to take a hefty loss on each unit sold (they wont).

the tech is there to do i think: just not at 250 quid. its unlikely to be that low in 3-4 years time either.

i am keen to try out the whole VR lark though...looks cool.

This is a 2nd gen headset. Obviously it's meant to have new groundbreaking features. The hard part to imagine is the price and the 220 field of view.

Going to enjoy seeing that quadruple over the next generation, and then get over 50% on the PS6.

Such a joy. Half Life VR later this year will attract a lot of attention and pave the way for more big IPs to bring it into the mainstream.

I'm thinking of picking up Ace Combat 7 for the PSVR. Anyone tried the VR mode in that game yet?

Why would there be a near 15 year gap between PS5 and PS6?

If i get the PS5, the PSVR2 is a no brainer. I love PSVR, and the only con for me is the ridiculous amount of mandatory cables.
