PS5 tip-off reveals console's INSANE power as "Sony meeting" infiltrated

A spy shot taken from the "Sony meeting" where the insider supposedly became privy to the PS5 specifications.

(Image: © Reddit user u/17791)

Following the official PS5 unveiling by PlayStation 5 lead system architect Mark Cerny last month, our idea of just how powerful Sony's "next-gen console" is reached tantalising new heights, with an AMD Ryzen CPU, Radeon Navi GPU, and super-fast SSD promising to deliver truly jaw-dropping gaming experiences.

However, very little backed-up-with-numbers detail was then forthcoming, leaving gamers to wonder just how good PS5 games will look, and just how well they will run in comparison to Microsoft's next Xbox flagship, which is codenamed "Anaconda".

That though, if a reported insider leak is true, just changed dramatically, with a tip-off from a person who was actually attending an official "Sony meeting", relaying a whole bunch of number-rich PS5 specifications.

The supposed spy's dossier of information was originally posted on Reddit, with user u/17791 revealing that, apparently, a close friend had recently been "at a Sony meeting due to the nature of his work" and that this official Sony meeting "took place the day after the PS5 article went up", which is an allusion to the Wired-exclusive PS5 soft launch with Cerny.

And, while we would definitely take these leaked specs with a pinch of salt, if the PS5 is going to be equipped with anything like a 7nm AMD Zen CPU with eight cores and clocked at 3.2Ghz, as well as a custom AMD Navi GPU that is clocked at 1.8GHz and delivers 56 compute units and 12.9 teraflops of power, and a large 24GB of RAM and SSD, then it is definitely going to be pixel-pushing powerhouse of a system.

That's because in layman's terms all those numbers equate to insanelybig console gaming performance, with 4K-plus resolutions and high 60fps-plus frame rates deliverable.

There are a few threads where PC owners doubt, fear and downplay PS5's potential power and impact in the coming generation. For you guys this is yet another leak reconfirming similar numbers you guys argued blue in the face against.

Some of you self proclaimed expert PC gurus might want to settle in with the idea that PS5 might to blow you current PCs away or have similar performance to your high end rig you paid $1000+ to build, but have exclusives that blow everything you can run on it to dust.

For xbox fans this is one powerful SKU, weaker editions like Lockheart need not apply. All PS5 exclusives games will be coded to the metal to a single powerful unit for the most impressive games with devs getting the most out of 1 specific piece of hardware.

For PS fans still holding on to hope for a $399 system with incredible next gen specs like this, let it go.

Beware PC gamers, in 2021 (or very late 2020) the PS4 will crush 2019 mid tier PCs!

@boxrekt2:

On per CPU core basis, Intel Skylake X already beats AMD Zen v2.

Zen v2 has two 256 bit FMA3 operations per cycle with GPU style gather instruction capability.

Skylake X has two 512 bit FMA3 operations per cycle with GPU style gather and scatter instructions capability.

The price for Skylake X's X299 motherboard is declining i.e. it's Intel waiting for AMD's move.

Yeah PC gamers are shaking in their boots how on earth are they going to compete with a 56 CU GCN card and a AMD CPU clocked at 3.2GHz... That type of performance is just unfathomable.

The leaked prices are true a 56 CU navi chip will be out this year for $330... And a 8 core Zen 2 CPU will be a Ryzen 5 that will cost less than $200, PS5 in 2020-2021 will be competing with mid level CPU/GPU's from AMD that released 1-2 years before its launch.

As long as PS5 has good exclusive games, I can careless about it's specs.

So the PS5 games will look and play identical to PS4 games? That's just sad.

I don’t even care if they come out with a PS5 as I think the graphics is already good enough with the current gen. Just give me the god damn 1st party games.

1 - You can easily build a PC better than those specs right now

2 - When the PS5 launches, those specs will sit firmly in the “mid level” PC tier

3 - A couple of years into the PS5 cycle those specs will be quite “meh.” And 5-7 years from now those specs will be holding back gaming, just like consoles do every generation.

I love how console kids hype power at the beginning of every generation, and then have to downplay it within months.

Every gen the same topics and they never turn out to be true. I'm happy if the PS5 can compete with (or at least get close to) the PC I build 1.5 years ago (with a 1080 Ti).

Not like I was expecting much coming from PS5.

Impossible the PS5 will have the power of 1 million atomic bombs.

Is some serious shit impossible to beat by any PC.

No disrespect, but even when I built PC's I acknowledged the price of it and is far, far worse in todays market. Slightly disingenuous when people claim PC will always be stronger, maybe it will be for you. The vast majority of PC gamers are going to have weak ass computers and will be unable to buy competing hardware at that price. Considering the prices of GPU's these days, next gen consoles are bad news for anyone wanting to build one.

@Random_Matt: We are still a year+ away from the console launch. New PC hardware will be out by then. How are new consoles “bad news” for folks looking to build a PC? The PC hardware prices will drop and the hardware will only get stronger. The consoles hardware will be locked in until Xbox and PlayStation decide it’s time for you to have something new.

Maybe the US has the luxuary of cheap HW then, here in the UK a vega 64 still almost costs £500/$645. Even a 2070 cost more than that, I'm not paying it, neither will your average gamer. Nvidia drop prices? Not sure if I should laugh.
