That's pretty cool as long as the engine is modified to widescreen displays it shouldn't be an issue.

Why can't they make a good game with an updated engine? i do not see a reason why they would make it with a 15 yo engine.

That doesn't sound exciting

While the game will look fine, Infinity engine has a lot of issues with pathfinding.

Or you could play the original or Divinity if you absolutely insist on living in the past.

LOL @ PC gamers who buy a 3k PC to play a game from the land that time forgot.

No irony there, none.

Probably because the developer making this game spent a lot of time working with it (doing the Enhanced Editions), and it would save a lot of money to reuse the old engine rather than build a new one?

Personally, I still need to play the two first games. It's on the list. And the list is just growing at this point.

It would save a lot of money to reuse the old engine sorry I was confused before at why anyone should give a flying **** for a game that uses an archaic engine but now I know they save money I am totally behind it. As a true PC gamer I will upgrade my PC 10 times so I can play classics from the 80's that look hilarious then laugh at console gamers.

1. No need to invest in a new engine.

2. Developers already have plenty of experience with the engine.

It is about lowering dem indirect costs.

Pretty much inline with the typical "quality" of his posts. Going by the divinity if your are stuck in the past non-sense... he still seems bitter after he made an absolute fool of himself in that Divinity thread from a while back.

They are not doing the series a justice if they are going to make a low budget game with old engine.

No. Thus: It will be good.

Core gameplay over graphics. Console gamers seem to have trouble with this.

While i like the idea, I would just go ahead and make a new engine. That's the fun part of game development anyway. I don't know why they want to skip to the monotonous asset design phase.

Or just use the Divinity Engine.....

Not sure I want this. Much as BG2 is one of my favorite games ever, I don't want to see more if they aren't going to do it the justice of reasonably modernized graphics and mechanics. Infinity looked cool for the time but it's outdated as **** now. PoE and Tides are releasing on semi-new engines too, which is just going to further exacerbate the problem.

It will be crap. I don't trust Beamdog. They used this remastered thing with BG 1/2 as quick cash-in. Their remastering sucked balls. So I would not have my hopes too high that they can actually produce a decent third installment of the most epic game in the gaming history especially with the same ass old engine. I would rather give my money to the modders who tried to remaster BG2 with Dragon Age Origins engine. That thing looked epic as hell. What Beamsdog does is just despicable.

They should just build it using the tools that come with Divinity: Original Sin.

@foxhound_fox: There are limitations with old engines. A better engine could result in a better game.

A good example that I know all too well is dota vs dota 2. Dota used the wc3 engine of course, and as such a ton of mechanics (that didn't make any sense) were in place just because of the engine's limitations. This is why Valve knew it was a good idea to create a sequel (apart from the plethora of fincancial reasons) with an updated engine.

I know that this franchise has nostalgia value, but this seems like a case of lack of ambition.

I'm not opposed to old-school-style games (I've spent many hours playing Spiderweb Software goodness), but I never thought the original engine for this particular series was very attractive to begin with.

If they are going to use the DnD ruleset I would rather have seen them use something like Divinity Original Sin's graphics engine along with completely turn based combat.. The real time pause is a abomination that not even the original devs could properly balance in which there were numerous balancing (and broken things) issues in BG2..

for the type of game it is using the old engine is not a travesty by any means.

the quality of the backgrounds is not dependent on the engine for example. thats all up to the artist. i would be more upset if they were making a new neverwinter nights using the old NWN engine because that really was ugly (great game though).

a lot of work has also been done on the D&D rules with that engine. a new engine means that would all have to be retested again.

a few updates i would like to see though (maybe some of these are already in the enhanced editions).

  • support for much higher resolutions of course.
  • an ability to make it TV friendly (i have a linux box connected to my TV and playing kerbal space program is a non runner at the moment due to the UI) as well as monitor friendly.
  • replace the 2D sprites for characters with well animated 3D models.
  • provide a lighting overlay of the background (e.g. day turns to night, the lights come on and they do cast a shadow and such like). apply this to spells also. also apply this to the player as they explore (much smoother revealing of the areas as you go around it. its all black at the start of a new area as i remember it).
  • make it easier to make mods (more engine tools rather than the engine itself mind. i cant remember BG being that easy to mod).

Sounds like a cheap cash grab to me. If they were serious about revamping the franchise they would use a modern engine.

Baldur's gate was my first ever PC rgp game, I had that and Icewind dale and loved the game although a bit challenging. Old engine would be fine with me as long as they at least tweak it a little.

So it's being made by a company that has made no original games and their only experience is remaking old games and causing a whole load of bugs?

I have low expectations.

It's not a Baldur's Gate game. The proper dev stated that.
