Dear street racing fans!

EA has announced that Criterion Games has taken back to developing future Need For Speed titles while leaving Ghost Games to become an EA support studio.

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2020-02-12-ea-will-move-need-for-speed-development-back-to-criterion

Well, I hope Criterion Games may able to fix the flaws from the current gen's Need For Speed titles for the next-gen.

Should let Criterion make Burnout and give NFS a rest.

This kinda sucks.

criterion should be allowed to make burnout

Ghost should still be able to make NFS games, I feel they finally nailed it with Heat

I got Hot Pursuit for free on Origin years ago (the newer one, not the PS2-era game) and I played for about 10 seconds and never tried another Need For Speed game, because there was no option for manual shift.

Have they become real racing games again since then?

@with_teeth26: Yes, now Ghost is being reduced to a support studio and Criterion is allowed to make games again.

I hope EA gives them a bit longer than 2 years to get the next NFS done.

I also see this as bad news as I feel there was a lot of talent in Ghost games, I just think that EA never gave them enough time to get the next NFS out.

Gotta agree here. Ghost is made up of mostly former Criterion employees. Basically the same set of people. Maybe the best of the best are still at Criterion, but still, two years is not much time for modern game development. They should let the studio, whoever it is, get the game to a certain standard of quality before nailing down a release date. Just putting out whatever they have after two years gets you into this current predicament.

Burnout is dead and never coming back. I gave up hope years ago.

Need For Speed continues to suck.

It’s weird that EA managed to kill both franchises after the massive success they both had in the PS2 era.

I don’t know what the hell EA did that crippled both franchises so bad.

Burnout Paradise was just average while NFS has declined to the sad state it has been in for years.

Oh no. Not again.

Need For Speed ≠ Burnout

Burnout ≠ Need For Speed

Thinking back, I absolutely hated the handling mechanic of Hot Pursuit (2010) and Most Wanted (2012). It made the gameplay really frustrating at times. I much preferred the tighter controls of the ones made by BlackBox and even Electronic Arts themselves going back to MW (2005) and even before to NFS I-VI.

They are shooting themselves in the foot again by going back to Criterion Games.

Anything away from EA is a good thing.

They're are the Ying to the Midas touch Yang.

NFS Criterion was so cookie cutter I got bored with it pretty quick. I have not bothered to play a NFS game this gen but admit those they have been making looked pretty good, just not into racing games too much but when I have an itch I just play the Forza games.

@Metallic_Blade: 2005 Most Wanted was one of my favorite racing games ever. Pretty much all the cool stuff I liked from the Underground games, plus open city and cops. Fantastic. Wish I could get figure out how to get my old hard copy of the PC version to work.

For me personally, I don't have problems with Hot Pursuit 2010 and Most Wanted 2012's handling since I'm used with Burnout's driving model.

I hope Burnout may able to come back by 2021 to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Imho, Ghost did a good job with the last two NFS games. Felt that "Underground" feeling while playing them.

Too bad Criterion will now ruin everything.

Obviously the community wants them to resurrect Burnout series rather than continuing Need For Speed.

yeah this. I would have loved to see them make a new Burnout. NfS is pretty much dead for me
