Naughty Dog working on multiple projects, 'dying to share' details

Studio co-president Neil Druckmann mentioned the studio’s current workload during Sony’s CES 2022 presentation.

After commenting on the upcoming Uncharted movie and HBO’s The Last of Us TV show, Druckmann said: “And we’re dying to share with you the multiple game projects we have in the works at Naughty Dog.”

Ahead of The Last of Us Part 2’s June 2020 release, game director Druckmann said his next title could be a sequel to the title—a story outline has already been written for a potential third game in series—or a new intellectual property.

Fellow Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells said in April 2021 that the studio was still struggling to fully implement a multi-project development strategy, something it first attempted to embrace with The Last of Us and Uncharted 3.

“I would say even today we’re just short of that,” he told the Game Maker’s Notebook podcast. “We definitely have multiple projects, but only one that is getting the lion’s share of focus at any time.

“We don’t have two projects that have several hundred people on them. We have one [project] and then some that are in pre-production, or maybe just creeping out of pre-production, but will have to wait until the main focus has completed before we move everybody off of that project.”

In mid-2021, Naughty Dog job adverts revealed the studio was hiring for its “first standalone multiplayer game”, which could be the result of The Last of Us 2’s delayed online mode having been expanded into its own title.

The studio is also reportedly making a PS5 remake of the original The Last of Us.

Wowza, Sony fans have just been getting a lot great news lately. What do you hope to see from Naughty Dog, SW? I'm not sure how I feel about a Last of Us remake. The original was good! Maybe sequel is better? They did eff up the story tho lol.

@SolidGame_basic: not sure im happy about this. They didn't confirm a new uncharted. Is there any news about a new uncharted?? Tlou doesn't need a remake, just like dead space doesn't need a remake. And even if they remade it, I wouldn't buy it. Why spend $50 or $60 on a remake, when the og still looks fantastic, and you can get it for on the ps5 collection.

I agree with a sequel, for tlou. Shun tlou2 as a spin off title, and we can all pretend it never even happened. Seeing how they already killed off joel, theres nothing that can be done but to call it tlou3 and have elle discover the truth, and maybe a way to save the world from the zombie apocolypse.

huh.. Last of Us 2 is a 93 on metacritic and Uncharted 4 is also 93.

A bigger, better version of TLOU Factions is exciting and something the fans have been waiting on now for almost a full decade. The community is still big on the original all these years later.

Oh silly me. A high-scoring game could never be made in a harmful work environment and nobody ever left the company because of it and everything is happy fun time.

I'm sure we'll hear about it this year's E3 2022 assuming it's still going to happen of course...and yes, I'm aware Sony won't be at E3 as usual but ND can show up...I think.

Naughty games have been far from appealing for me for the entire last gen.

A good game. Haven't had once since Uncharted 4. Hopefully we get Uncharted 5, and they make his daughter the lead.

I would like to see something different. A surprise. I think the last ND game i enjoyed was Crash Bandicoot 3. The likes of Uncharted do nothing for me.

From a technical standpoint they are excellent. They get great results out of the hardware they work on (And they clearly know it with the amount of showing off they do. More power to em.). But I didnt find Uncharted 1 and the Demo of uncharted 2 fun to actually play.

Probably a remake, PVR game and maybe a new one thats due out in a couple of years at least.

Yes please just to confirm the launch date of the PS5 in USA was 12th November 2020 and in the UK it was the 19th November 2020.

@tdkmillsy: I don't know why you're trying to make some kind of a credible story here. You have a box... good for you. If you ever owned a PS5, you'd know its much better than the X, and you wouldn't have got rid of it.

when tlou2 got out of your way and let you actually play there were some fantastic stretches of survival / stealth gameplay. shame they were so few and far between. they need to crank that up to 11, dial the cinematics down to 2-3 and they'll have a winner on their hands. never happen though

I knew about their dedicated MP game but it makes sense they'd be working on something else on top of it. Most curious to see if they'll be make new additions to current IPs or a brand new IP.
