Mario or Lara Croft. Both have an expansive history and both are icons, each in a different way.

Please tell me you're joking. You do realize not all those characters got the same level of developement because their games never actually focused on them, right?

The new tomb raider was all about and lara, and I love that game and the new lara so I voted her.

Although there all pretty good characters.

if you're gonna complie any kind of poll then the criteria should be clear and defined.....

Mario and Gordon Freeman are defined by their gameplay mechanics.... They serve no purpose other than giving you an in game entity to play as because you can't play as yourself.

Lara Croft And Nathan Drake are movie characters in Video Games and their Personalities are At Odds with the gameplay Mechanics, even Marcus Fenix isn't that bi polar, He's a mass murderer and lives up to it in the cutscenes.

Master Chief doesn't have face.... Even animals have faces... Even GLaDos has a face, there for Master Chief can go F*#*#* Himself.... Or can he .... Does he even have genitals..... !

1st of all, No we didn't notice they are all white, we don't see the world that way and I don't think TC does either.... the fact that you are the 1st one to notice says something about you doesn't it ?

I don't even imagine him as a human being, when I played Halo 3 has frozen and those other guys were talking about him as if he wasn't there, like his feelings didn't matter. Master Chief is not Human as far as I'm concerned.

And "Roguish with Red hair" doesn't soundlike ethnic confirmation.

you know what's funny? Between all those characters Nathan Drake is the only one to actually have a personality.

at least the old Lara wasn't. She had big lips and tanned skin.

The United States is the largest gaming market in the world. Video games are a business designed to make money, not make you happy.

It's hardly surprising that developers are targeting the largest markets. Japan, despite being almost 100% Japanese, makes a large percentage of its comics with white characters because...well, I don't know honestly but I've heard it is easier for the animators/artists to convey emotion on characters with lighter skin. Japan has also had an obsession with light skin for centuries because it was an indicator of wealth.

And the Chief could be black, brown or purple for all we know because you never even see his body, were it not for the books which have a description of him.

It's not some racist conspiracy. It makes sense, though I do agree with you that it would be nice to have greater diversity in game protagonists.

Everytime Video Games try to diversify they accidentily miss represent or even offend certain ethnicities.... And they catch alot of heat for it.....

what people need to understand is 99% of video game characters are offensive in some way or another......

If we can rise above this then we can get some real diversity up in here.

Ethnicities are nice start but I don't really care about that. The real minorities I wana see are Women.... Children and Ugly People..... Video Gaming doesn't have enough these characters, especially Children.

Mario hands down it's not even close. He has been the face of Gaming for decades. When these other characters were just a twinkle in their creators eyes.

Out of them, Chief. He's a badass genetically enhanced soldier, and I can roll with that.

Drake is so-so; I don't like Mario; Freeman is unnoticeable; and Lara is just ok.

From what I can choose...Mario. From experience...no one beats Toe Jam and Earl

While Master Chief and Nathan Drake both have luck on their side, Master Chief would win in a fight being a super soldier and all. He'd also be able to take out a raider of tombs like Lara Croft who may be lucky to be alive but she's gonna break every bone in her body in the fight before the end comes. If Gordon Freeman has the Gravity Gun, he may have a chance against the Chief but I sincerely doubt it.

Then there's Mario, a silly character but out of all of them I believe he could be the one to give the Chief a run for his money. With a 27' vertical plus a wide array of power-ups, including Metal Mario, the fire flower and the ice flower, and a large array of other power-ups he may just be able to take the super soldier. Don't forget that if Chief tries running away in a Warthog, Mario's right there in his Kart with a blue shell to take him out.

Oh, best character that represents the franchise? Oh, that's obvious. Mario.

Most of these characters aren't good characters because of their personalities or involvement in a story.

They're just symbols and icons of popular games.

While I think the post was meant as something that was more tongue-in-cheek, taking this view is incredibly short sighted.

If you're white:

It is a privilege for white people to wake up on a daily basis and not have to view the world as a place where people of many races exist. Race doesn't affect whites in the same way as people of color, so of course you don't see the world like that, but it's a problem if you don't.

If you're a person of color:

As a person of color you should recognize that while you may not choose to see the world and all its racial divides the color of your skin plays a significant role in the way that people view you and the choices that you make, whether you like it or not.
