3 million+ sold = popular (God of War 3, MGS4, Fable 2, Uncharted 2, etc.)

5 million+ sold = extremely popular (Gears of War 2, etc. )

10 million+ sold = phenomenon (Halo 3, World of Warcraft, Modern Warfare 2, etc.)

(Still trying to figure out categories below 3 million)

There's a flaw there buddy. Anything that sells 500k + could be considered popular. Saying that a game has to sell 3 million + to be popular is pretty rediculous. Demon's Souls was popular for a few different crowds and it didn't sell over a million, to my knowledge.

I agree anything over a million is popular. It does make a difference I suppose when an indie game with a low budget vs a blockbuster which has $10's millions in dev costs and crazy advertising.

Even 3 million + is relatively high. Usually, million+ selles are pretty popular.

Well, the longer a game is out plus the more game platforms it's on, the more copies it will sell. The biggest problem here IMO besides the arbitrary cutoffs is that you're not setting any particular timeframe for the titles.

Take the 3 million+ examples. You've got 4 titles there: God of War 3, MGS4, Fable 2, and Uncharted 2. The MGS4 numbers are wrong because it sold over 5 million copies as of the end of December, 2009. [link] The game came out June 2008, but it is still selling.

Now Uncharted 2 sold 3.5 million copies between October 2009 and January 2010. [link] But does anyone really think it won't reach 5 million before it goes out of print? Of course it will.
