Whichever company is able to put out a cheap, slim version of their console (obviously not an easy thing to do) will see a huge surge in their numbers and win this generation. I am a launch 360 owner and would immediately buy a smaller, quieter, cooler 360 (or PS3).

Nintendo cheated by starting with a slim, beautiful console. I liken it to the IPOD when it first came out which IMHO was not the best MP3 player around; Creative and Rio players were better in almost every category aside from beauty and industrial design. When it comes to consumer electronics style goes a long way.

I think particularly the XBOX 360 is just an ugly, heavy, noisy console and could really benefit from a design reboot.

Is anyone familiar with the insides of the XBOX360 / PS3? How feasible are slim versions of these consoles? I've read that both consoles now have 65nm chips.

unless the slimer version is cheaper than the original consoles I really don't see it impacting sales too much. The only people who would buy it are those who want it simply for aesthetic value. (unless of course the slimer one offers something the original doesn't)

Take it to the bank that there will be a PS3 slim.

Not so sure about a 360 slim though. Id want them to perfect the hardware first (which they're well on the way to doing)

360 slim is extremely unlikely, no way will MS, a company whos lost loads to RRoD something which is now seemingly dieing down, decide to take the console and then cram everything closer together, that'll just make things worse again.

PS3 slim would be the most beneficial imo. The PS3 is just so huge and it's hard for me to find a place that is well-ventilated where i can put my PS3 cause the damn thing gets so freaking hot(which would also cause problems with a slimmer version).

It won't happen, the only reason the PS2 went slim is because they removed the harderdriver.

With the Xbox 360 and how much power and awesome it is, I don't think it can shrink anymore. But it is a definite possibility for the PS3. Think about it in release order: Original Gray PlayStation, Slim, White PSOne, Bulky PS2, PS2 SlimLine, PS3.

With the way they released consoles back in the day, its pretty inevitable that the PS3 will get an overhaul. Maybe a Wireless N unit in it... maybe....

The 360 looks just fine the way it is. The PS3 needs to lose a few pounds. That thing is huge.

I also do not care if there is a slim of any system. I only care how the system looks on the Tv, and not on the shelf. Yes the Wii looks good on the shelf, but bad on the TV. IMO...the Xbox 360 looks ok on the shelf, but great on the TV and the PS3 looks bad on the shelf but great on the TV.

Only stat I look at is how it looks on the TV. I have all 3 systems, and never ever stop to look at the beaty of its case. It's what is on the inside that counts.

With the harddrives they could never get them as slim as the PS2 slim.

Also I can't see how a slim 360 would be able to take the same hard drives as the current 360.

360s just look like computers.

the reason the ps3 is huge is because the power brick is already in it.

What are you talking about? Sony's reiterated on every piece of hardware they've put out, PS3 Slim is inevitable.

Both systems are due for 45nm processor overhauls in late 2008 or 2009. Only then will either system run cool enough to have a slimline version.
