most of todays graphics could be made on older consoles with alot of engineering

the cartridge based systems, you can put a 30GB flash in one and add a Co Proccessor and GPU to make it look like some games today. the disc based consoles are harder to do to make it like todays. if it was a ps1 or saturn, 9 discs would be needed but it could be done. if it was ps2 or gamecube or original xbox, they can push the consoles to do HD and add better detail on the discs to make them close. the ps2 and xbox have games that do 1080i and they look like early current gen games. half of gamecubes library already does but at 480p.

Baldur's Gate II requires somewhere around 30% and 40% more disk space than Twilight Princess.

Here's Baldur's Gate II:

Here's Twilight Princess:

erm... I think you referring to the Super FX co-processor which was used on old cartridge based games in the 90s with games like starfox on the SNES. Im not saying it cant be done. But you would need massive power input into the cart which would blow anything from then and its also pointless. Imagine buying Crysis 2 for N64 on a cart (interesting idea), but each cart will have to be shipped with a GeForce 560 or something. LOL, that would make each game retail over $1000. YIPES

"Super optimization" can only take you so far. The hardware is more crucial than space if you're looking for graphics. Let's try putting The Witcher on a Gameboy Advance cartridge and see how that holds up.

1. Saturn or PS2's CPU is not powerful enough to drive modern "fat" GPUs. 2. ViDock say hi.

External graphics card case fo laptop PCs.

ViDock solution enables laptop PCs with ExpressCard** slot to use desktop PC's video cards.

Are you sure you want cartridge size like ViDock box?

**The laptop's ExpressCard must implement the full ExpressCard resource allocation process.

The cartridge part holds some truth. But to be honest I don't want to pay $500 for each new game that comes out. The graphics proportional to storage argument though...no.

That's not exactlytrue. Look at the Neo Geo carts. Bigger carts allowed for more space and more frames of animation. It's also worth looking at the the SNES's FX cart that produced quite primitive 3D, although fully legitimate 3D.

I really have no idea what made them thing they could make a game look as good on an old console as it does on a new one. It is about bandwidth of getting data from disc, to CPU, to memory to graphics and so on. When you have more and more to do, update graphics, add shaders, update AI and so on each elements takes many CPU and GPU cycles to complete. Take a cartridge, chuck a co-pro inside and and GPU, what the... This isn't the same old console this is a souped up console. I could take my old 486 DX266 and make it run like a Core i7 if I add a core i7 into it. Man give me a break, think before you post stuff like that.

Well if you Duct tape 100 Mega Drives together with a toaster then you have a console which is more powerful than the Wii. It also makes you toast.

The sad part is that people actually believe that the the larger the storage medium the better the graphics (ie Blu-ray).

Most of the concepts can be done on prior consoles...but the free roaming worlds seamless, the poly intensive graphics, the amount of info onscreen....NO.

I think what you ment to say if that most modern games could be made on older consoles if they used very downgraded graphics and physics or different engines. For example GTA IV could be done on the PS2 using the San Andreas engine. But of course it wouldn't look nearly like GTA IV on the modern systems looks like.
