Mortal Kombat 11 and Nintendo: A WB exec was worried that the game was too violent for Switch

Nintendo Everything

Scott Hawkins, head of the developer relations team at Nintendo of America, delivered a talk during BIG Digital 2020. His presentation was primarily aimed at studios potentially interested in bringing their games to Switch, but he also shared an interesting anecdote about Mortal Kombat 11.

While Mortal Kombat 11 was in early development on Switch, Hawkins met with the team and was chatting with an executive at Warner Bros. We don’t know who exactly this person was, but they were “concerned because it’s a mature-rated title that it wouldn’t be Nintendo-friendly.” Mortal Kombat 11 was ultimately “a big success” on Switch, so Hawkins used this story to demonstrate that you can find “an audience for lots of different types of content on the platform”.

Hawkins’ full comments are as follows:

“When Warner Bros. got the first playable build of Mortal Kombat 11 up and running on Nintendo Switch, I flew down and met with the team down in southern California. One of the executives there was meeting with me and showing me the game, and we were playing it, and he looks at me and he says, ‘Scott, are you sure Nintendo wants this game on Nintendo Switch?’ And I said, ‘Yes, we absolutely want this game.’

He was concerned because it’s a mature-rated title that it wouldn’t be Nintendo-friendly. But clearly after seeing the first month’s worth of sales and see it be the number one game on the platform, it shows that yes, there is an audience. There’s an audience for lots of different types of content on the platform, and this was a big success.”

The decision to put Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch did seem to pay off. When it launched in April 2019, it was the best-selling game on Nintendo’s console for the month in the United States.

...

You've GOT to be kidding me... has literally NO ONE moved on from the early 90's, even in the damned games industry? Back when Nintendo censorship was at it's worst, then the ESRB came along and Nintendo gradually grew more lenient on most aspects? For god's sake, Nintendo published FPS (two as a matter of fact), Survival Horror, and even straight up action. Not to mention Mortal Kombat has been uncensored on Nintendo since MK II on the SNES (at least on NA/EU).

I mean, ugh...

Nintendo has always been known as a "kids" console, and probably always will be for reasons like that. I remember when they bitched about the game "Night Trap" on Sega CD in court and stated that game will NEVER be allowed on a Nintendo system... it's on the Switch now though so that didn't last.

MK11 is a joke. There's about as much non-canon characters as there are canon missing a lot of key characters in favor of crap like Terminator and Robocop in a desperate attempt to get the attention of more people. Meanwhile, it's fine seeing Baraka rip off the front of someones skull, pull out their brain, and eat it, but god forbid one of the girls shows cleavage, or bare skin above the knee, or if Sub Zero doesn't look "Chinese" enough.

That shouldn't stress you out. Just enjoy the game as it is and for its gameplay, gore and graphics. You can always go back to Mortal Kombat 2011 if you want cleevenge in your Mortal Kombat games.

It's just odd what they find okay and what is unacceptable.

They had to downgrade literally everything to make the port work so good for them. Too blurry to even see blood 🤣🤣

The violence in MK11 is too extreme, period. Not just for Nintendo, but for any platform or any medium.

He's talking about the Lin Kuei clan aka Sub-Zero's clan who are a secret of Assassins & Thieves from China and please note, the Lin Kuei are not Ninjas...before the term "Ninja" was a thing and Scorpion is an actual Ninja aka Shirai Ryu clan. What eoten means Sub-Zero doesn't look like Chinese but he doesn't need to be.

It's the only reason it sells or before that the *ahem ahem*. As an actual fighting game it sucks in comparison to the Japanese games.

It is, guy is bull shitting. Total of 8 million+ sales across all platforms sold to date. Switch will have a tiny slice of that.

While MK originated in the Arcade era, I started playing MK on SNES for the first time before venturing out and playing it in Arcade. Even back than, that game was violent but even I knew better it's just a video game. MK is the somewhat to blame for the rise of rating games lol.

Today's standard, MK (especially MK11) is more of a Torture Porn game and gets more silly as the Fatalities goes if you ask me but since I'm a huge fan of the franchise, it can go either way for me😏

@davillain-: Yeah I just really enjoy the silly and over the top fatalities and seeing how creative they can get with them.

I’m not really a huge fan of the franchise myself but I do enjoy playing them. They have gotten much better in the gameplay department throughout the years though.

Has Nintendo ever stood in the way of the MK series, other than the original on SNES? I remember by MK2 the SNES brought the gore but I never followed series after that, I could not get into the combo crap of MK3, so stayed away until MK9 on last gen systems.

I think Nintendo just wants to maintain their family friendly image. It’s a great console for kids and their games have always seemed to target the younger crowds.

Fun fact: MK on SNES, developers put a code that lets gamers unlock the uncensored version thus it was a loophole so the gamers can truly experience MK. It was a nice getaway from the rating boards lol.

@Jag85: Mortal Kombat should always be violent, but they do need to stop outdoing the previous game. It's gotten so over the top, that I would enjoy the game more if they toned things down. Plus, it would give them more time to clean up the wonkey animations in the actual fights.

That's the main gimmick, the key selling point. Without it, there's no way MK can compete with Japanese fighting games in the gameplay department. They can afford to tone down the *ahem ahem* (and make themselves look good in the process), but toning down the extreme violence would kill off the franchise. It's funny how the *ahem ahem* always generates way more outrage than extreme violence.

I've always thought MK is a game especially for kids. This is because childish human beings who are pleased with such grotesque expressions are called kids in society.

It's not just Sub Zero they went out of their way to look like more of a stereotype. They redesigned a number of the other characters. They changed Kitana, Jackie Briggs who I guess they didn't think looked "black" enough, and outfit redesigns because I guess they showed too much skin in MK10. So they did a lot of redesign and even censorship on those fronts, but upped the gore. It seems like their priorities were a bit off in MK11. And there's actually lore reason as to why many of the lead female characters wore the outfits they actually did.

I prefer the newer outfits. 9 was a bit too Spirit Store Stripper Ninja, right down to the silicone implant looking boobs. Plus, showing so much skin made it obvious they had used the exact same character model for almost every female. Shiva was the only one that was different, and all they did was awkwardly stretch the torso to make room for extra arms. They even used the same face for Kitana, Jade, Syndel, and Shiva. The new games are way less lazy in this regard.

And while outfits are toned down from previous games, it's not like MK11 is all pant-suits all the time.

Even Sindel looks way sexier when you change the outfit, so not everything isn't strip-down on the female fighters. NRS did okay in making the females more fighters than the average stripper fighters this time around.

As for Jackie Briggs, (same goes for Jax) NRS was jumping on the Black Panther bandwagon thus making Jackie similar to Suri style is why they made the change. Even Jax ending arcade, they were using Wakanda style in the background. NRS really went too far with Black Panther theme.

Up to the time Donkey Kong Country in 1994, then the 16-bit console war changed.
