There is a lot of writing and stuff. I'll edit this post a bit more, but it will take me a while, so please be patient.
Though, here is what you need to know. Source: Wii U News on Miiverse, Gamexplain, IGN, and Nintendo Life
* Multiplayer * - No voice chat. -
Splat Zones: New king of the hill style mode where a team must completely cover a marked zone in their ink, triggering a timer. -Defend the zone until it runs down to win. -
Ranked Battles coming post launch. Reach Lvl 10 in Turf Wars to unlock it.
Multiplayer Mode- Nintendo will be watching global progress of Splatoon. Once enough people hit lvl 10, they'll enable Ranked battles. - Ranked battles will use a dynamic leveling system that utilize letter grades, starting with 'C-' These are independent of overall level.
-Concerning ranked battles, in their preview, Nintendo Life state that: "This option allows you to play a number of 'different game modes' using a traditional ranking system found in many online multiplayer shooters, but at the time of writing Splat Zones is the only announced mode." ...which suggests that there'll be even more Online game modes in the final release.
In Splat Zones If other team covers the zone first, you're hit with a time penalty. - If & when you take control of a zone, that time penalty is added to your timer. - Splat Zone mode is more strategic, skill based than Turf Wars. - To make up for the lack of voice chat, Splat Zones will frequently update players as to what's happening during a match. Such as:
We lost a zone"
"Zone neutralised"
"We capped a zone"
Single Player Mode - Central hub is called Inkopolis Plaza. - Solo mode is accessed via a manhole guarded by Captain Cuddlefish who clues you in on the games' backstory. - Octovalley is the underground homeland of your Octarian foes & the hub for solo mode. The actual levels are hidden in Octovalley, you must uncover them by blasting ink at areas where you think they'll be. - Solo levels have the illusion of scope like in Mario Galaxy but are linear affairs, tasking you with solving puzzles whilst fighting off the Octarian Army.
- Health regenerates if you stay out of harms way for a brief period. - Solo levels are also more compact placing a premium on careful jumps & well-timed shots. - Paths can be laden with traps and enemies. - Some enemies will possess keys or other items required for advancement. - Both solo & multi use same control scheme.
