PS3 was on par with sales of 360. Both at around 84 mil, so no. And wii only sold because it capture the casuals attention, so no Wii was only the main dish with old people and soccer moms (and delusional ninty fanboys)

N64, gamecube, wii u and now switch are and were all side dishes compared to the main course, Playstation consoles.

Wii & 360 were ahead of the PS3 for most of Gen 7, until PS3 caught up to the 360 near the end of the gen, but never caught up to the Wii. Also, the "casual" argument is senseless, since most PS3 & 360 owners are also casual gamers. The Wii was the leader of Gen 7, whether you like it or not.

Doesn't get more casual than Sony consoles and their famous movie games.

@acepilot: Why do you want PS5 to launch faster? It would be better for everyone if they took as much time. I don't think Sony even cares about X1's sales at this point and just care about how much money they're making right now.

Agreed. I know most core gamers want it out sooner than later, but I'd rather give them more time so the hardware can be more capable. Also, I'm no performance nut so I'm happy with titles coming out now.

This is essentially a "pot calling kettle black" situation. Sure, most of the Wii's users were "casuals", but so were most of the PS3 & 360 users. It's basically one group of casuals attacking another group of casuals for being slightly more casual.

The Wii was CLEARLY targetted at casuals. (people who'd normally never touch a console)

PS3 and 360 was not or definitely not as hard like wii. Unless you count brogamers who play fifa and call of duty as casual.

Oh please. PS3/360 games were barely more "hardcore" than Wii games. They were just as easy, a walk-in-the-park, designed for laid-back casual players who don't like the idea of difficulty in their games.

I believe MS went after the Wii market heavily when they re-branded the 360 mid-gen and focused too much on non-gaming essentials like Netflix, Facebook, and internet browsers. Not to mention the Mii rip-off w/their Avatar system. The last part was the heavy focus on Kinect and forcing RARE to make more Kinect games as well as other 3rd parties, which forced a lot of people to turn away from the 360 in the final years.

PS4 was confirmed to have the best 12 month period of any system ever in the history of gaming! It beat out the Wii and PS2 this year.

Peak fiscal year sales of each system:

PS4 - 20 million (FY 2017)

PS2 - 22.52 million (FY 2003)

Wii - 25.94 million (FY 2009)

@SecretPolice: Obviously the games aren't that boring if the console has all the sales. Microsoft is counting on you being bored enough with Xbox One to fall into their GaaS traps. I'll be damned if I ever buy a console desperate enough to overhype broken early access shit like PUBG on the system. Xbox has been been taking Ls all 2017 and next year looks to continue the trend.

Collectively in their first four years:

PS4 - 70 million (November 2013 to December 2017)

PS2 - 71.3 million (March 2000 to March 2004)

Wii - 84.64 million (November 2006 to December 2010)

We all know Nintendo systems have no legs and Nintendo drops support at year 4 or 5.

Official NPD data isn't out yet but it's kind of pointless now that we know the ranking and approximately how much each console sold.

The numbers show the complete opposite. The PS4 has sold less in its first four years than the PS2 did. Read it again:

At this point in its life cycle, the PS2 had sold at least 1.3 million more units than the PS4 did. At this rate, it's highly unlikely the PS4 would be able to catch up to the PS2.
