Announcement posted in the Insider dashboard for what seems Alpha ring testers. Likely to launch soon.

You’ve spoken; we’ve listened. In support of offering gamers the freedom of choice, we’re making changes to the Microsoft Store purchase experience by offering customers a simple way to instantly return digital products like games and apps through account.microsoft.com.

When a game or app leaves you wanting more, we're here to help. Self-service refunds on Xbox One and Windows 10 provide a quick, simple way of returning a digital product.

To request a self-service refund:

1. Navigate to account.microsoft.com and sign-in.

2. From the top menu bar, select Payment & billing > Order history.

3. Navigate to a purchased game or app, and select Request a refund.

Please note the below conditions for requesting a self-service refund:

• Games and apps are eligible for self-service refunds within 14 days of purchase if you have less than 2 hours of play time across all accounts.

• DLC, season passes, and add-ons are not eligible for self-service refunds.

• The game or app must be downloaded and launched before requesting a self-service refund.

• You must wait for at least 1 day after the game or app's release before requesting a self-service refund.

• Certain Windows 10 apps may not be eligible for self-service refunds.

• Microsoft reserves the right to block access for users who abuse self-service refunds.

This is absolutely fantastic- brilliant customer friendly move by Microsoft.

Meanwhile Sony won't even fucking refund my pre-orders.

Refunds are a basic right. It's so weird to have also seen EA do this before Valve.

Evil EA do this before good guy Valve... Lol, that says a lot.

If you spend 60 dollars on something that is broken, unplayable before a dozen patches, or plain oversold in hype trailers (like No Man's Sky) you should be able to get a refund within reasonable terms.

Sweet! Typically I have had to call to get a refund from MSoft.

I keep saying it but... if MS fixes up its first party situation, I'd be worried if I was Sony because that's the only thing going for them atm. Plus marketing deals I suppose... lol.

But that's not gonna happen. Phil has been head of Xbox division for a while now and MS still has a serious lack of quality first and second party developers.

And they didn't succeed in building and pushing through strong new IP to sit alongside Halo/forza/gears.

Very nice. Although I've received refunds for digital orders before with them already. Once when my nephew bought a game on my account before I had a purchase password set up and another was just recently when I canceled my Andromeda digital pre-order. All I did was open the chat with Xbox and they offered the full refund almost immediately. I'm glad they're making this another consumer friendly option for digital content. Xbox made it so easy for us to go digital this gen and beyond because of these consumer friendly options not found with the PS ecosystem, they're so far behind XBL.

  • You must have installed and started the game before you can return it
  • Your total play time logged on the game must be 2 hours or lower
  • You must request a refund within the first 14 days

Which is, I think, a good balance between looking out for the customer, and making sure the system is not abused.
