Microsoft's been in the news a fair bit lately on the strength of its supposed collaboration with the US National Security Agency - a Guardian report alleges that the latter is able to gather user data via Skype, Outlook and Hotmail with Microsoft's consent. The company has now released a formal statement on the matter, denying much of the report and calling on the US government to allow it "to share publicly more complete information about how we handle national security requests for customer information".

Microsoft has also rejected claims that it will allow the NSA to gather data via the Xbox One's Kinect sensor, which is required for the console to run. "Absent a new law, we don't believe the government has the legal authority to compel us or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data," reads a comment mailed to the Verge. "And we'd aggressively challenge in court any attempts to try and force us to do so."

Doesnt matter if it is mandatory or not, anything that is connected to the internet................or that is connected to something that is connected to the internet..............can be hacked and used as a spy tool.

read between the lines. Them mentioning they'd challenge (note: not refuse) such a thing implies that it could come to court and thus recording is possible and they'd fight it in such a case.

Sorry to say, but, all they are truly doing is admitting that they are collecting information that a law enforcement agency WOULD want to get their hands on.

So, it all boils down to two questions:

1.How much do you trust Microsoft?

2.How much do you trust the US Government?

The cloud will be used to process intelligence data. thats why the original plan is "always online". Kinect is more than what phones can do. it is capable for realtime behavioral biometric profiling down to your heat signature.

The simple fact is, we don't have any real privacy anymore.  The kinect is a small part of a much bigger problem

I really hate all this since the Xbox One in many ways is the better console but I do not feel comfortable with this. It makes me not look forward to next gen since PS4 is just a PS3 with upgraded hardware and the X1 has all these data collecting fears.

doesnt matter your words alone. "if uncle sam orders it you cant do jack shit" so anyone that owns a ps copy can be spied upon.

If MS had no intention on spying then they wouldn't be keeping records of all skype conversations and emails and they wouldn't have signed with the NSA. MS can say whatever they want, they've have lied many times before.. the facts speak for themselves.
