HAHA! Oh Nintendo!

Metroid Dread's $30 amiibo boost your health and ammo reserves • Eurogamer.net

'Nintendo's upcoming Metroid Dread will be accompanied by a pair of amiibo figurines you can buy in a pack for $30 (here in the UK, retailers are yet to set a price).

Now, we know what these figurines will do when you first scan them into the game.

The pack's Samus amiibo will add an extra energy tank to your health, increasing its overall capacity by 100 HP. These permanent power-ups are often hard to find in Metroid games, but you'll get one easily here.'

The figurines look pretty cool.

I'd be tempted to buy them if I had anywhere or any reason to display them.

$60 for an indie game with a Samus skin and $30 for a happy meal toy with cheat codes.

I only bought 2 Amiibo's in the past just for display but I never use them for in-games mind you. And when it comes to Amiibo's, I wait for a sale, not paying full price.

But anyway, I'm super hype for Metroid Dread myself and I'll be getting the Special Edition which is way worth the money compare to this Amiibo.

Between this, and the fast travel $25 toy with the Zelda remake, Nintendo has hit a new low in my book. This is the most blatantly cash grab, middle finger in your face bullshit I've seen since EA locked a storage chest for items behind DLC in Dragon Age Origins. Even that was $7, not $30. I can't believe it, but EA seems less greedy than Nintendo right now.

I mean, this is a bit better than the warping in Skyward Sword, considering you can not use these and collect the health tanks anyway (ala Skyrim and the Zelda gear). And hardly anyone buys these for game functionality (me included), I buy them for being cheaper than statues affiliated with these properties.

Hell, let's not forget, Samus Returns hid a mode behind an amiibo, which is MUCH worse. Even WORSE than that was an Animal Crossing spinoff on Wii U, and THAT bit them in the ass!

Also, this is a set with TWO amiibo. The average singular amiibo costs $15 each.

But of course, this is the internet. Can't wait until you get called a "bootlicker" just because you ain't that mad over something with blatant misinformation. It happened over Nintendo's E3 streams this year when Twitch and Giant Bomb refused to air their conference because of weird wording with translation of Nintendo's tweet in Japanese, nevermind people streaming and reacting to their conference without consequence anyway. Even to the point where copyright lawyers are being called "bootlickers" and pointing out what's wrong.

I had the Metroid and Samus amiibo from Samus Returns for about 5 years I think. Sold it last year for $90. It's now fetching for higher. Oh well lol.

First off some can be difficult to find but lets not embellish and push the Amiibo too hard. IMO if you need an extra tank and 10 extra missiles then Metroid isn't the franchise to play.

Their amiibos have pretty much always given you things in games that help you slightly, but are completely unnecessary. Not sure why it would be worse this time. In Metroid games you already have more health and ammo than you need, so it's not like it's worth to give a shit. Also doubt many Nintendo fans buy them to use those features.

@girlusocrazy said:

I'm disappointed that the combat looks like more of the Samus Returns type. That was OK for one game but it doesn't feel as good as the original style.

Slightly worried about that too. But it does look fluid.. Makes sense that it's the same style since it's the same developer. Never played Samus Returns, regrettably.

Except Samus Returns had goodies locked behind game completion & Amiibo. Also, buying amiibos is always an option, not force mind you.

THAT was closer to on-disc DLC/microtransaction that everyone in this thread are accusing Nintendo of right now. And "no one is forced?" Tell that to everyone else, not me! I'm just saying Nintendo has done much worse than this, and no, did not get away with it, no matter what conspiracy theorists on the internet are claiming.

Amiibo are the definition of anti consumer paying to win and extra content behind a paywall. If this was Sony or ms they would be crucified.

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of amiibos. I'm a completionist, I like to have access to all content available, so this sort of thing really bothers me.

If amiibo content was available also as dlc, I'd be happy with that arrangement, but for someone like me, this is a turn off for Nintendo game.

This Hurts completitionist that want to have all the energy tanks and health unless you can earn it in game and you only start with a little extra but if this scales thats completely ridiculous need the amiibo to max everything out.

They're just extra of what you can find in the game anyway. Like the Zelda gear in Skyrim. Use the amiibo to unlock, or find it yourself.

They know their fans are so easy to milk that they will thank you after being milked, so why not? At this point i'd lock 1/3rd of the game behind a toy, and sell it for $99. Why not? Stop slacking, Nintendo. Lets do it. Lets condition our fans at accepting this before the Switch 2 comes out. Also, remember to put a bunch of "limited edition" stickers on the box to create a sense of emergency, it works ever time.

Why are people still failing to grasp the concept of Amiibo?

This is a pack of two $15 figurines. It also gives you an extremely minor in-game effect.

Heaps of games feature cosmetic DLC for the same price or more, which have no in-game effect and don't give you anything tangible at the end of it. This is a better practice - if you want the figurines, you get an in-game bonus as well.

For context, Persona 5 Royal has $60 of DLC content, including costumes, small battle items, and some DLC-exclusive persona. That's a full-priced game's worth of cosmetic DLC. How is that any better?

Amiibo have always been a hard sell here, for some reason. Personally, I like some of them. Only problem I have with all this is Nintendo usually only gives one store access to selling them, they sell out and become super expensive on ebay and marketplace.

Nintendo should put out more of them at launch.

If the game looked like anything special I might take issue, but even then, this is one of Nintendo's least offensive implementations of amiibo I've seen.

Eh, not even my issue. If Nintendo wants to continue to make these games that look like 3DS attempts, they can have at it, I'll place my money where it is earned. Ori has raised the standard of what a side-scroller can be:

.....and sorry, but this crap doesn't cut it in 2021:

Typically I'd be ecstatic for a new 2D Metroid announcement. Unambitious, boring and dull. Fairly hideous actually. It's not like the Switch can't do Ori tier presentation. How unfortunate that this franchise, bursting with potential, is in the hands of a company who relegates it the lowest possible attention, budget and ambition.

Stale and bland. The new Nintendo way.
