Metal Gear Solid 4 hype level: over 14 million downloads on Gametrailers.com

We all have notions of how much hype a game is getting, but until now there hasn't been a good way to quantify it. However, I've found that Gametrailers.com is a pretty good judge for levels of hype for different games. Of course, it's not 100% indicative of how sales will turn out, but it's a pretty reliable hype meter.

If you type in a game on the site, you will see how many downloads (i.e. views) a particular game page has gotten.

MGS4 currently has 14,296,905 views.

Compare that to the next biggest PS3 game in the future lineup, Final Fantasy XIII, which only has 1,865,524 views. Of course, FFXIII only has one trailer out so far, and its release is much further out than MGS4, but nevertheless one can see a tangible difference in the current hype level between the two games.

Here are some more view counts for different highly hyped games, some out, some not out yet.

Halo 3 (XB 360): 18,535,591

Grand Theft Auto IV (360/PS3): 4,975,090

Killzone 2 (PS3): 5,225,475

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii): 6,595,082

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii): 7,173,159

Hmmmm...it's hard to say what this means...is this just for one video or a bunch of videos because there are probably more MGSIV movies than all these other games combined.

I'm still estimating sales @ around 4 million max, 3M realistic. I only go by numbers and the series has been selling less and less each time out, with MG3 selling 3.96M copies according to www.vgchartz.com. And that was on a system with an install base of 120M units.

Yeah I mean its only MGS4, lol. Get real man, MGS4 is going to sell tons of ps3's and killzone 2 aswell. I laugh how alot of lemmings say the ps3 is dead but dont acknowlege that the ps3 has done as good as the xbox 360 did in its first year and please remember that none of the huge known successful games have come out yet. And they act like no one is going to want a ps3 when games like, MGS4, FF13, FF Versus, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Socom Confrontation, Tekken 6, Infamous, Little Big Planet, Eight Days, God of War 3, Resistance 2, Jak And Daxter, White Knight Story, and many many more that u will ony see on a ps3 platform. If u are still arguing about price then I guess u will be missing out on quite a few amazing games for an affordable price of $399. Stop being a cheap ass, if u can pay for xbox live then $399 is affordable with free online. :)

The first CG 'trailer' for Halo 3 was a year and a half ago. The first MGS4 video was two and a half years ago.

Also keep in mind these are not unique visitors. They are the total number of downloads for all videos by any user.

Shooting down helicopters with RPGs and turret guns isn't fun? Setting traps with claymore mines isn't fun? Wearing disguises and sneaking through heavily armed fortresses isn't fun? Collecting dog tags from enemies for unlockables like Invisibility isn't fun? I could go on. It's pure fun, accept it.

the "gameplay revealed" trailer has the most views with over 2.7 million. Seems like people are really interested in playing it.
