As if it couldnt be any more casualized.

BioWare is in the process of realigning its Mass Effect franchise to appeal to a larger audience, according to EA boss John Riccitiello.

Speaking during an investor Q&A today, Riccitiello explained that Mass Effect 3 will boast greater mass appeal than its two predecessors.

"One of the things that Ray Muzyuka and the team up in Edmonton have done is essentially step-by-step adjust the gameplay mechanics and some of the features that you'll see at E3 to put this in a genre equivalent to shooter-meets-RPG," he said, "and essentially address a much larger market opportunity than Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 began to approach.

"We're huge believers in the IP and are purposefully shifting it to address a larger market opportunity."

I've thought this, too. Maybe they are upping the shooter mechanics so they can translate it better to a MP. God knows people were begging for it like crazy. Maybe EA decided it was a good idea. Honestly, I'm all for them making it a better shooter, but I still want it to be an RPG that relies heavily on its RPG elements.

As long as they don't change what they were originally doing and are only upgrading the shooting mechanics, that's fine. Let's not forgot about the rest of the good news that was just released last month.

Hey, fine by me, so long as it's actually good.

I had no problem with ME2 being "dumbed down" or whatever the hell else people have accused BioWare of doing to it. Truth is, it wasn't any more shallow than the first Mass Effect, save in a few superficial ways, and had vastly superior core mechanics, level design, and enemies.

The Mass Effect games are enjoyable because they have good atmosphere, music, and fun storylines which allow you to be either a badass hero who does mean stuff in order to save the galaxy, or a badass hero who does slightly less mean stuff in order to save the galaxy. They aren't deep role playing games, they're action packed space operas with nut-punching, alien sex, and super cool ethical dilemmas that challenge your, umm, system of morals, or something.

I hope ME3 has ten times more action than the last one and I do mean both kinds.

Maybe this one will play like Heavy Rain. ME2 was half shooting and half conversations, and the shooting did kind of feel a little too hardcore to me. I'd much rather just have them talk the whole time and action only take place in cutscenes. It would provide the ultimate cinematic experience

So long as it doesn't effect the single player, I don't mind. In fact, I hope thats exactly it. I'd hate for it to instead be them dumbing the game down or making it shorter or something like that.

No, 'appealing to a wider audience' are the words of Satan himself, any game that gets those words attached to it... there's a reason to be concerned, we don't know how they're making it more 'appealing', just assume that it is what it usually means, make it more simple, easier, more shallow.

One wonders how BioWare could make the game any less good, but seeing how they pretty much killed the Dragon Age franchise with one game, I'm not surprised.

I really hope bioware just says a whole bunch of crap without thinking about it. I mean good god they really make me cringe sometimes. A wider audience ? please no oh please no. Then again I wasn't dissapointed with ME 2 at all. And didn't think it was really casualized or anything like that.

I'm not very concerned (very slightly, but I do not automatically assume they are dumbing down their game on purpose). We just got a lotgoodnews in April, this hardly brings it down.

Usually when you go and first say that you're making a game more complex and RPG mechanic heavy you don't then delay it several months and then say you're tweaking it for a larger market. Considering ME2 was already pretty damn simple it worries me that this tweaking means as simple or simpler than ME2 or god forbid DA2 level where there's a definite ending no matter what your actions were.

The goal of most companies is to increase their success, not keep it the same. That's how the industry (any industry) works.

EA doesn't seem to understand that RPGs are a niche market, and no matter how much they try, they are never going to eclipse Call of Duty numbers by just trying to do so. You can't plan for that kind of success. It just happens.
