Marvel's Avengers - PS5/XSS/XSX - Performance comparison

Below is the write up by the Video Creator - My comments will be in bold

- The 3 versions have 2 display modes: 4K / 30FPS (1440p on S Series) and some improved settings or variable 4K at 60FPS (1080p on S Series).

- 4K / 30FPS mode has slight improvement in reflections, textures, particles, draw distance and shadows.

- In 4K / 30FPS mode they all experience some small drops in resolution, although they keep the target set most of the time, especially Series X.

- In FPS mode, for the first few minutes of the game, the PS5 resolution varies between 3840x2160 and 2560x1440p, but as soon as we get to the Quinjet and start missions with more open and loaded spaces, the usual resolution becomes dynamic 1920x2160p, while on X Series it stays at dynamic 3840x1836p. In this case, there is a clear advantage in the Xbox version.

- In FPS mode, Series X maintains a higher draw distance.

- Slightly better loading times on PS5. (all consoles load in under 8 seconds)

- The framerate is quite stable in both modes, slightly better on PS5. (All consoles will occasionally drop a frame or two on FPS mode, XSX and XSS do it a little bit more but it is still rare - I saw no drops while on the 30fps mode for any console)

Sony fanboys will feel better when they beat up on the XSS to feel better, it's the only way to cope with the trauma of the XSX beating them like a piñata with no more candy to spill out, they have to transfer that anger onto someone else...

Look at those massive resolution drops. Where is the Mark Cerny's secret sauce at? I am waiting. Where its at? The SSD was supposed to help the visuals. Where its at?

I played co-op with a friend since he was a big Marvel fan and he has reluctantly played many co-op games with me so I owed him. It was actually fun until the end, where the replay value plummeted.

Part of this was mostly attributed to bad MP scaling, like some of the worst. Anybody remember how bad first Division used to be and has witnessed what a substantial improvement the sequel was in this regard, well; Avengers is more in first Division territory, dare I say worse because once players hit the modest level 30 cap they were on equal ground for co-op, Marvel has a larger cap and just being a couple levels behind a partner is difference of one beating an enemy with ease and the other hitting something a gazillion times with no effect and going down whenever hit.

When I played it the game was also buggy, so much so, and a UI that would cause the game to get stuck and need to be reset when accepting invites the wrong way.

There is a problem motivating players to post-game grind too. The cosmetics are so bland. And the super-woke idea of not sexualizing females means not even Black Widow has any sexy costumes to grind for or pay for with extra money. You earn the best costumes in game so no need for any of that. Skill upgrades are such a grind they just aren't worth it because like I said the matchmaking and scaling was broken. No patch notes to date seem to acknowledge this so I haven't bothered to reinstall and see if it improved.

But there is a game that could be worth playing if they can scale the MP better, allow for quicker progression. I hear those people that were still playing are upset by progression changes lately. I can only assume they made it more grindy than it already was. Anyhow, yeah, fair to say this is just an Anthem waiting to be flushed down toilet entirely in another year.

@lamprey263: Sounds like an OK game until the end. Which is very similar to Anthem. I guess if the price is low enough, it may not be a bad purchase. Not sure I understand the relevance of the "super-woke".

Because if there were any low hanging fruit to attempt to force monetization into the game (as it is a GaaS), they were above it. Not a bad thing, but then why be a GaaS with nothing to sell in game currency for. There is basically nothing really worth spending any real world money for in this game. It makes me wonder why it even needed to be a GaaS in the first place.

That is how I felt about Anthem. The game would have been fine as a single player game but they wanted to monetize it but didn't know how. Based on what you are describing, the same applies to this game. Keep in mind, the developer works within the constraints of the IP holder.

Nothing surprising. PS5/Series X loads the game ~15x than PS4 Pro. Can't wait to see how current gen exclusive games perform.

Everywhere you looked, people were saying that not only will it help the PS5, but that it will give the ps5 an adge in visuals. Those people need to be reminded how braindead they were to even think that an SSD would do anything else but lower loading screens, and when it lowers them by just 1-2sec, its not even worth talking about it. So at the end of the day, the PS5 offers nothing. That Cerny ps5 presentation could've been just "we have a ps5 coming in the end of 2020. Bye" and it would've been the same. All he did is try (and succeeded) at hyping up NOTHING, and this is the 2nd generation in a row that he has done this.

Will we get good looking titles from the likes of ND, Santa Monica Studios, etc? Yes, and at 30fps they will look better than anything on the XSX, but that's not because of the ps5, but the talent Sony devs have. If the PS5 had the XSX specs, it would've been even better and possibly at 60fps.

Sony paid for Spiderman exclusivity on this game.. perhaps XBOX paid for performance exclusivity 😁😁

Cows complain that Xbox lacks exclusives. Well, PS5 lacks performance. At least Xbox are fixing their lack of exclusives. How is Sony going to magically find 2TFlops more performance? 😄

@UnnDunn: Release a Pro version in 3 years which they were going to do anyway. Not like it will matter PS5 exclusives will continue to stomp anything on the XSX for the rest of the generation.

Yay , congrats to Xbox !!! Even though the XB came in 3rd place this month when it comes to sales here in the US , heck even came in 3rd for the world wide sales, this the form of good news Xbox fan’s needed.

Good thing Cerny sinked a ton of cash developing that top secret SSD technology, I much rather save a second in loading times than having a better GPU. Another great victory for Sony and Cerny.

Not at all, you mentioned 1440p. You also lied about the quality mode. The PS5 had a single frame drop to 2088p.

In the performance mode it spends most it's time in 1800p.

PS5 also drops frames in the same areas and is running at lower resolution,the series X when it drops doesn't go lower than 58/59 the rest is locked 60.

Damn. That's a 59% difference in resolutions.

@tumorstation5: PS5 has a higher framerate on average actually. I'd wait for DF though considering they said the majority of the game is 1800p.

Remember 2016-2017 when we were all here talking about the Scorpio/One X running games at native 4K? How many of you would have believed we would be in a new console generation, in the year 2021 talking about dynamic resolutions for a crossgen game on both new consoles?

It really makes those who hyped native 4K/60 on the Scorpio look even sillier. If only they had listened to reason... “but the Forza Tech demo11!!!1!!1”

Anthem is a game I wanted to love but just could not.

Playing as Iron Man on the planet Pandora from Avatar (that's essentially what the game is :D )was so appealing for a few hours, then....bleh. Nothing. Just got boring and empty.

Singleplayer would have been better, focus on story and building the game world, less wasted time on the "service" aspect (which was lacking to begin with).

That is the most amazing thing about the game. It was built for "service" but it lacked the things found in service based games. 😑
