Have at it SW. Maybe Polygon's prediction will be wrong after all?

Edit: Actually, Polygon are already wrong. They projected 1.26 million copies sold. Whether or not it will be the worst selling MK is another question. It'd need to outsell Super Circuit's 5.47 million copies.

So, Polygon was only off by nine months, when their projection was based off of what ten months? That has to be very embarrassing for one party, and exhilarating for the other.

Cheers for Nintendo. I still hope they give up on hardware and end up a software company, but if they end up far too successful to make that slide I will be happy to. Lets hope sales spike so hard they make ten million by the end of the year.

well, the claim was:

...but even if every current Wii U owner bought the next installment, Mario Kart 8, it would still be the second-worst selling game in franchise history. That's because there are only 6.17 million Wii U consoles in gamers' homes, and that's fewer than the number of copies that all but one previous Mario Kart game sold. The only way Mario Kart 8 could sell more would be by driving gamers to buy new consoles.

Well there isn't one claim. It's an article stating the probability of why it's going to be the worst selling. It's in the title: "Mario Kart 8 will likely be the worst-selling game in franchise history, here's why"

For comparison, last one sold 35 million

I know, Mario Kart's sales will be a slow burn, and it'll get higher, but initial sales mean a lot.

Indeed. And the game is driving people to buy Wii U consoles. [Source]

It's not like they predicted first month sales, or any specific number at all. They simply projected forward the average attach rate of the series to the current WiiU's sold. I didn't read Polygon's blog piece as an attack, so much as over reporting every little detail of a big release, no matter how inane or obvious. And it's obvious MK8 is going to perform near the bottom of MK games, for the obvious reason. But that's the way "game journalism" seems to be these days.

But hey, MK8 either performed above the series average or they sold a whole mess of WiiU's. Either way that's good news for Nintendo.

Yeah this is good news, but the article was more or less just showing the reality to the WiiU's situation.

Selling very well to the current install base obviously. Now if that game can sell 2 million Wii U consoles that would be great.

You cannot declare anything regarding this game's total sales now. It, unlike most other company's games, is going to sell well for years. It's why Nintendo doesn't drop the price of their games.

I'm very surprised at how many consoles Mario Kart 8 is pushing. I saw the MK8 Wii U bundle for the first time on Sunday(just one left). Prior to that, they were sold out everywhere I went. Half the people at the office I work at got Wii Us, which blew my mind since several of them were very skeptical about the system.

Wasn't it bundled with the Wii right when it was given a price drop to $150? I think my sister bought that bundle. It was pretty popular.

Great game, especially for a good local multiplayer party game. Online is fun too. It's the reason I bought a Wii U (2 weeks ago).

Mostly, yeah. It seems the Wii U can be a viable console for another couple of years, through to the end of 2016 at the very least, which should be enough time for Nintendo to push a new system on to the market. Given that Wii U software continues to perform as well, it will even make them money, Essentially, this makes the Wii U a bigger success than anyone reasonable could have hoped- essentially, it makes it more than just Nintendo's Saturn, if you follow me.

I guess, but when I see people call Vita a failure(which I don't care, I dont even own one) and it has sold 8 million units, makes me think roughly the same thing.

Well, Vita hasn't actually sold 8 million units yet (and Sony refuses to tell us how much it has sold), along with the fact that the Vita has a one year headstart on the Wii U- sort of the same situation as the Wii U and the PS4/Xbone

Super Mario Kart sold in excess of 10 million units. Right now we're not even sure Wii U will cross that amount, let alone Mario Kart 8.

No, that's Sony's strategy- offer no games for the Vita, so people get excited even at ports and indie multiplats that require minimal effort. Nintendo's strategy is to offer high quality games consistently, which hold the power to excite people across decades.

Wii Fit U, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Followed up with Mario Kart 8 and a ton of digital eShop games in between them.

Remind me how many exclusives Sony or Microsoft has released this year on the PS4, Xbox One, or the Vita? No go on I'll wait.

The E3 Nintendo Direct there refers to their showing last year. They didn't have a Nintendo Direct this year. It was a Digital Event.
