Source: https://www.resetera.com/threads/npd-march-2018-far-cry-5-1-sea-of-thieves-2-ps4-tops-hardware-charts.38373/

Thanks to The NPD Group and Venturebeat for the breakdown.

Here are the numbers for March 2018:

Total: $1.316 billion (down 11 percent from $1.478 billion in March 2017)

Hardware: $331 million (down 32 percent from $485 million)

PC and console software: $613 million (down 10 percent from $682 million)

Accessories: $372 million (up 20 percent from $310 million)

SOFTWARE

“Far Cry 5 debuts as the top-selling title of March 2018 and instantly becomes the best-selling title of 2018,” NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said. “Far Cry 5 set a new launch month sales record for the Far Cry franchise, with consumer spending on full-game sales nearly doubling that of previous franchise best, Far Cry 3. Publisher Ubisoft is the leading publisher in both March and 2018 year to date (January through March).”

Far Cry 5 swept the console charts, but it’s not the only new game that saw success last month. Microsoft and Rare’s co-op pirate simulator Sea of Thieveslaunched on March 20 and earned a No. 2 spot in the best-sellers list despite only rolling out to Xbox One and Windows 10. Its debut came after several closed-beta sessions that drummed up hype. More than a million players set sail on the open ocean within the first two days, crashing its servers at one point with all their plundering and pillaging.

“Sea of Thieves was the second best-selling game of March, and is the eighth best-selling game of 2018 year to date,” said Piscatella. “Sea of Thieves generated the highest launch month sales for any title produced by developer Rare since tracking by The NPD Group began in 1995.”

Along with Far Cry 5, other franchises also set launch month records. Sony’s MLB 18: The Show and Hal Laboratory’s Kirby: Star Allies both had the best-selling debuts in their series histories.

Kirby Star Allies has had the strongest debut month of sales in the U.S. in the franchises’ history, according to The NPD Group. The Switch side-scroller had a 90 percent better debut month than 2002’s Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, which last held that distinction

The Kirby record is in terms of revenue

HARDWARE

Compared to March 2017, consumers spent less on hardware last month — $331 million, down 32 percent from $485 million. But year to date, hardware-spending is at a high, generating $925 million so far in 2018. This was driven mainly by Microsoft’s Xbox One, though Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best-selling console in March and 2018. The Nintendo Switch 32GB with red and blue Joycon controllers was the best-selling hardware in March and 2018.

While folks weren’t spending as much on consoles last month, accessories saw an uptick thanks to the popularity of multiplayer games like certain wildly popular battle royale hits.

MatPiscatella said: ↑

Full hardware notes. This should help.

Hardware

Hardware spending in March 2018 declined 32 percent when compared to a year ago, to $331 million.

For the 2018 year to date period, hardware spending has increased 13 percent to $925 million, driven by growth in Xbox One spending. This is the highest year to date total achieved since 2014.

Sony's PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console hardware platform in March, and remains the best-selling console hardware platform year to date.

The Nintendo Switch 32GB with Neon Red/Blue Joy-Con is the best-selling hardware item of both March as well as 2018 year to date.

Wow. That’s very impressive sales for Sea of Thieves considering that it’s also available on Game Pass.

Really? On gamepass the game was 10 bucks. That doesn't count as a digital sale? Money was exchanged, or is MS now accepting IOUs?

You can't count gamepass sales because people might not have downloaded Sea of Thieves.

And how would we know that?

MS doesn't give out numbers to anything, except how many times you sank and got drunk.

How can we trust these numbers when a new game is on a digital service from day 1? Not day 10 or day 31, but day 1.

I really doubt that NPD tracks Game Pass games as sales, it is one price per month for access to all games that are in the selection and games rotate in and out of that selection so it’s not really a “sale” for any particular game.

Game Pass isn't counted in unit sales, but purchases made in GP are. And since NPD goes by revenue (digital and physical), obviously there's a bunch of people dumb enough to sink money in this game after having access to it, and got it up in numbers for the first week. MS covered the spread as a GaaS product as opposed to physical units. It likely paid off.

Note: Windows 10 is likely counted too since it's all "Xbox" now. And MS was pitching this game to the Twitch crowd pretty hard. So, yeah, I think they got a big 1st week of revenue out of it, only to have the air let out of the tires later.

Good to see Rare and MS having success with Sea of Thieves. Play Anywhere and GamePass with 1P support is off to a good start. Def. See this enticing some 3P support with this combo.

Coming up soon is the Hungering Deep content, Sea of Thieves will just keep on getting better, looking forward to May.

because switch is good family cosnole to play with many people. it is one of the selling points of the switch. with one joycon set 2 people can play. with 2 4 people.

as opposed to a dualshock that you need to buy 4 times. and you dont even have any couch multiplayer to play with.

It's by individual SKU. So, it's something like Neon Switch > PS4 Slim > PS4 Pro > Gray Switch, but PS4 + PS4 Pro > Neon Switch + Gray Switch

In other words, nobody wants a Switch with gray Joycons.

of course XB1 would be at +24%, they've been selling like crap for the last 4 years lol.

SOFTWARE

They (M$) were hyping the game for 4 years amidst endless flops, cancellations and delays of all other major AAA projects!

No doubt tons of game hungry Xbox players were duped into scooping this up at launch.

Even so MLB 18 the Show still managed to come in #3 and it's not even that huge of a Sony exclusive with millions of dollars of hype behind it. Let's just see where Sea of Thieves ranking sits next month.

Also, how come lems didn't mention xbox's servers crashing? Guess it only matters to them when it happens on another platform.

They had to buy "something" and it was SoT.

This also explains why Halo always sold so much on xbox...like, what else was there to choose from?

Lol cut the fanboy wars. If you think I'm a cow please check my post history.

I'm serious though, logically it doesn't seem possible for Neon Switch to be number 1 when it doesn't win NPD. That's all.

Looks like a healthy game industry to me and it looks like everyone is doing pretty well which is good for our industry. Still laugh at the fanboys making up excuses for SoT selling well. You people are pathetic.

You think those are "excuses"?

Ok, Forget God of War for a moment...

SoT narrowly outsold lightly marketed MLB 18 The Show this month, if those are excuses, are you confident that SoT will still be ahead of MLB 18 on next months charts?

Again, not asking if you believe SoT come out ahead of God of War, but yearly released MLB the show?

So, the PS4 Pro and Switch had a better effect on hardware sales revenue than the Scorpio.

How was sea of thieves the number 2 in march. The beta was enough for me.

Five Nintendo games on the list. They're doomed. Also, MK8 is the GTAV of racing games. That thing never stops selling.

Personally I don't get the appeal for mk8 thought is was just an average installment in the series.

To be honest I didn't even like Sea of Theives when I finally got to play it, but I am happy to see when a new IP is having success. I also understand their are some people that do enjoy the game and I am happy for them. I do see you creating false narratives stating that it narrowly outsold MLB18 do you have actual sales figures on that? Also if you read the actual post it looks like both Pirates and The Show sold very well. It stated it was the most sales from any Rare game since they started tracking sales in 95 also it stated MLB The Show had the most sales in franchise history. To me that says that both games did great and that is awesome for our industry.

BTW I bought both MLB 18 The Show, best baseball game I have ever played. I also bought God of War and have been enjoying it when I have time to play it. They are both better exclusives for me then SoT.

What I find pathetic is stupid as cows that have to down play anything positive for Microsoft. Sony is the king and it is okay. They have made some great exclusives this generation and it is paying off for them. Fucking fanboys are the worse!

I'm happy Sea of Thieves sold well. It's got a long way to go but, unlike the sensationalist youtube tabloid gamers, I think most gamers are more patient and forgiving of the flaws in video games.
