Looks like PS5 is winning the controller war, will it also win the headset war with 3D audio?

So there's been a lot of praise for the PS5 controller for its ergonomics and new features. Even Polygon called it a 'literal game changer'. But there is also another new feature that Sony is leading the way in as well; 3d audio. I got my PS5 headset last week, and I'm looking forward to using it when I play Demon's Souls. IGN gave the headset a 9/10, saying 'The Pulse 3D goes beyond making PS5 games sound great, it makes them feel more alive.' So what do you think, SW? Will be 3D audio be a game changer for gaming? Do you see it being a valuable feature?

Who actually wants to wear headphones all the time, though? I know that's big with PC gamers, but normal people wanna relax their heads once in a while. I've never worn headphones that I forgot I was wearing. Mark Cerny said 3D support for speakers will come later. I wonder if it's gonna be as good as Atmos and DTS:X with speakers. Somehow I doubt it. Probably better off using headphones ALL THE TIME.

Wearing headsets when you have access to quality audiophile headphones for the same price or cheaper 🤮

Hey OP just make sure you clean the gunk out of your ear before you send Sony a picture of it lol.

Well the controller does look a bit better then their previous ones. Still don’t care for the symmetrical analog stick placement myself. I need to actually hold myself to get a feel for it’s weight and if it has a nice ‘solid’ feel to it. Their previous controllers felt ‘hollow’ and plastic like. Kind of sceptical about the triggers myself though. I prefer how the Xbox One triggers are contoured and feel like.

It's compatible with USB headphones. Which means you can use studio headphones with DACs/amps. Connect them right to the PS5 instead of the controller.

That's what i did this whole gen on the ps4. I just find those "gaming" headsets (especially the ones with LED lol) completely pointless and a waste of money.

Nothing is great until Sony does it.

They said that about ray tracing. They said that about 4K, and they are now saying that about haptic feedback.

No need to worry there. In that respect it feels better than a Xbone controller, though not as nice as the Elite.

Definitely the best feel of any PS controller yet.

@ConanTheStoner: Well that’s certainly nice to hear then. Considering the stuff that they put in for the adaptive triggers would help give it a more ‘solid’ feel.

Didn't you know Sony invented all of that and more, i mean everything that is great in gaming today was because Sony did it first.

Yeah, got one earlier this week. They've been available for a while, just ordered one on Amazon lol.

My initial impressions followed by the weirdest Tormo meltdown here.

But yeah, even without testing the new functionality, it's a nice controller.

Sony fans are really a special bunch.

Its funny that a lem has a PS5 controller before a cow lol.

Don't go sending private pics to solid i don't think he could handle it :)

I applaud Sony's controller. It would have been easy for them to rerelease the same controller with a new console. Within reason, I think they've taken modern controllers about as far as they can go. I think the XBOX controller is consistently great, but they've been playing it safe. I would have liked to have seen them push the envelope a little bit more this gen. I do like that you can use last-gen controllers with the new xbox. I think that is a very consumer-friendly decsion.

That being said, symmetrical thumbsticks are not my thing. I wonder if Sony ever explored releasing a version of it's controller with thumbstick positioning similar to microsofts? Just having that option for gamers would break down a major reason why some people don't want to switch.

Audio headsets? I wouldn't buy one or wear one. But again, I like that Sony is trying to evolve parts of gaming on consoles beyond just the games themselves.

I think Dolby would have something to say about leading the way in audio

They have solutions for both headsets and surround sound solutions

Stupid move not to support Dolby Atmos and completely not for the gamer's who want to game on multiple systems or watch movies.

Speaking of Dolby, even Iphone support Dolby Vision another thing PS5 doesnt do.

But sounds like the controller will be good in games that make use of it.

Sony will win the war, but not because of its 3D headset lol.

My 20 year old pair of Beyerdynamics are vastly superior in sound quality :p

As are my 13 year old Denon's.

@ezekiel43: A good pair of headphones will beat any type of speaker setup, (even the multi million dollar setups, and yes they do cost millions of U.S. Dollars) unless the room is treated acoustically. I have a sweet sound setup, but I also live downtown and like having my windows open, so certain subtleties get lost in traffic, drunk people, construction etc.

I can't hear the same separation, openness and low frequencies with headphones that I can with speakers. Headphones let me hear the sound more distinctly, however. I wouldn't wanna wear them all the time anyway, nor should I be expected to.

Yeah I know but to say they're winning a non existent war???

Don't get me wrong, I look forward to having 1 but it's not something I would use to determine which console I'd get if I were in that position.

@Juub1990: Weird that Sony fans are excited about haptic feedback on the new controller, something no other Sony controller has offered. It's almost as if they're excited about a new feature they probably haven't used before...
