Looking into the future

The current generation has proven to be a complete success for Sony so far as Microsoft has had to resort to some pretty desperate measures by quickly releasing a Xbox One reboot in the form of the S version. This comes as no surprise due to Microsofts short-sightedness, and their greed.

Since we now know so much about the PS5 and next gen console coming from Microsoft, let's start speculating about the PS6 and whether Microsoft will even still be in the console game by that time. My prediction is that VR will be the standard by that time giving us a whole new genre of gaming, led by Sony. The release date of a PS6 should be 2022, based on some graphs I made. It's possible Sony will resort back to the extremely powerful Cell processor for PS5, so Cell 3 may be around for PS6. I hope this is the case given how successful the original Cell processor was for PS3.

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts of the future based on current projections, and how the distance between Sony and Micro$oft continues to widen.

I desperately want apple to enter the console market I feel like nintendo and microsoft are like flopping fishes that have no idea what they're doing against the ps4.

We need competition we need someone to enter whos going to knock out the ps4 off its high horse. We don't need dead fish flopping all over place against the ps4 like microsoft and nintendo have done this gen.

We need innovation we need price we need power we need samsung we need apple GET in this market throw nintendo and microsoft to the dogs.

I agree. Apple also needs another flagship product, and with their huge install base in iOS, they could do a lot of really cool things. I don't like the idea of Apple buying out Nintendo like some people suggest.

Situation is a little different now.

Yeah now apple is 3 times as big as microsoft and sony.

They could come in and tell NVIDIA and intel to create a beast and they could go even lower in price.

Apple has huge reserves right now that make microsoft look like a small ant and sony is like bacteria.

Think about when people think apple they think this company could buy microsoft 3 times and sell it off 3 times.

That and they have a large footprint in the market with iOS.

Yeah think of all the little kids who love those ipads. What if apple told those kids to buy their console.

I don't really see Apple joining the console race anytime soon, and for anything less than $599, the same price they launched the PiPPiN 20 years ago. Should any of the current 3 console manufacturers ever leave though I can see them or Google trying to jump in, but I don't see them having much success. The remaining 2 established gaming companies will soak up 80% of the excess market share.

One trend that seems to be emerging is that we'll see more iterative hardware development cycles for consoles. So the idea of a five year console "generation" is essentially over at this point. The release of the Xbox One S is the first shot across the bow, but the upcoming Scorpio and Neo completely blow the traditional cycle out of the water. And the NX - whatever it ends up being - is likely to challenge the idea of a "traditional" console and diversify hardware offerings even further.

In all this, there will still be millions of people playing Xbox One and PS4 over the coming years, because new games will still run on those platforms.

So, this is basically uncharted territory now. It's impossible to predict what a "PS6" will be, because we don't even know what the PS5 is - is it the Neo? Or is it an entirely new generation of console post-Neo? It seems to me that these traditional delineations between generations is totally disappearing now.

@applebeatspc: when did almost 3 years become 'quickly' to release a slimline version? I guess Sony had to quickly reboot the ps3 twice last gen, so did Microsoft since Nintendo was dominating them so?

That would be pretty cool if Apple joins the console business. Imangine a mac pro shaped console? That would be sick!!! Then you can remote play to your 5k imac and game at 4k
