Just found Libertalia and holy molly people weren't exaggerating. This game is a climbing simulator. I can count the number of shootouts I've been into on both my hands and I've probably played 10hrs at the very least.

The game features A LOT of climbing. Easily 50% of it is spent climbing(and there's always that huge crate with wheels in the unlikeliest of places to help you reach high places). Can't count the number of times I gave Sam a boost in order to reach a ladder. The shootout sequences are excellent but dear lord they went HAM with the climbing.

GOTY? Ratchet and Clank reboot was better than this.

Discuss.

Edit: Also, Naughty Dog kinda went lazy with the rope design. This thing just magically reattaches itself to Drake even when it's left hooked to some unreachable place.

Pretty much. They added a lot of fluff that didn't need to be in the game at all, which served only to increase the play time. The car segment at the beginning of Madagascar for instance only served to show off the admittedly beautiful location and say "hey look, we have big maps now". The exposition presented during that segment was on a whole unneeded and could've been done in alter segments.

It's sad because the game plays so much better than the previous entries but they haven't let it shine yet.

Yea, I just got to Madagascar and the game is a fucking chore to play. From the still shitty gunplay to the no stakes platforming to the stupid and pointless Jeep that might as well be on rails like the FFXV car. Nathan is an asshole, his brother is a cliche that I can already see betraying you then sacrificing himself in some way to save Nate. The story is dumb other than the two very short Elena scenes so far. This game just feels pointless and generic

Copied from an earlier thread lol

Spoilers below.

Earlier I wanted to reply uc4 because I remember the combat being fun, but then I remember there is zero action in the first 2 hours and within those those hours, the most self indulgent shit you will ever see: a non skippable segment of drake walking in his attic looking at memorabilia of his past adventures attempting to evoke a feeling of nostalgia because the stories in the first 3 games have been so deep, thoughtful, and mesmerizing (that was fucking sarcasm btw). Oh and the scuba diving section, holy ****.

The best part though, is when you're finally on the pirate island chasing the treasure, and in the middle of it you get a 2 hour flashback of little drake exploring (by exploring I mean walking slowly) of a hag's mansion who happens to be a friend of drake's contrived mother.

Also: the dozens of walking/climbing sections that destroy the pace of the game.

Gunplay is good tho

Yeah, I've decided I'm just not gonna play it. Gonna sell my unopened copy and that's that.

Seriously, the only motivation left for me to play this game is so I can discuss the game with people here... and that's just not worth a weekend of my time to trudge through another Uncharted.

Sorry Blab.

A quote from a post I made two months ago.

That's exactly how the game comes off to me, the platforming in the game is very unnatural, excessive and forced. In Rise of the Tomb Raider for example; you traverse environments that feel thoughtfully laid out and as if these obstacles would actually be in your way and inhibit you getting from point A to point B. It's things you could realistically expect, and even though the game has a lot of verticality it's leveled out thoughtfully with a lot of ground based activity as well, and no traversal activity feels tiresome, it's paced and balanced in a way that doesn't make you question it.

For Uncharted 4 it seems as if they simply made it as difficult as possible to get from point A to point B even though it seems to be a rather simple venture, convolution simply for the sake of doing so. The best way I could compare Tomb Raider to Uncharted 4's platforming and climbing with a loose example, imagine a rocky path going up a mountain side that is obstructed by downed trees and boulders, in Tomb Raider you would climb over the trees and rocks and continue on your way, in Uncharted 4 you would scale the entire mountain side for 20 minutes, slide down five different crevasses and grappling hook across a 200 foot void just to make it 100 feet further than you initially started beyond those rocks and trees.

Up until the point that I stopped playing (Chapter 11), I would wager that 50% of the actual time spent controlling Nathan was climbing and obscenely boring platforming sections, at least 50%, then another 30% walking, 10% shooting, crouching and running, and 10% solving puzzles. I don't attack this game on the merits of its story, I attack it on the merits of its atrociously paced and laid out "gameplay" sections, I found it insulting to my intelligence as a player.

Also, the shooting mechanics are very meh, it doesn't need to be delved into at length, they're decent but nothing memorable and done far better elsewhere.

P.S. The crate lol, don't even get me started on the damn crate...

"No one has been in these tombs in 600 years Nathan"

"Oh look Nathan, a crate that looks brand new like the other crates you've already seen five times, it's also got modern day rotating wheels and is exactly the height needed to climb up this ledge!"

It would make this place much more interesting if the people spewing that crap were actually capable of coming up with an argument for why people HAVE to like the UC series, which doesn't involve linking to metacritic.

The game is visual amazing and thats where most of the value of the game lies. Gameplay and pacing on the other hand ranges from terrible to good.

@Juub1990: Traversal has been very much a staple for the series. Even the well paced UC2 has a lot of it. I would agree though one knock on this one for me is that they got the balance wrong for my liking. As you say the shoot outs are actually excellent better then what most think in sw. They should have done a bit more of that. I would have liked the pace of 2 where traversal navigation is quickly enveloped with enemy encounter something I thought they missed here. They focused too much on the pairing interactions. The structure of the story and the way it was told the characters the production value and yes some of the game play are excellent.

I think all of that makes it a great game much better then Ratchet and Clank reboot even if it doesn't have platforming at the level of Ratchet and Clank for me. I dont even know if we can really call it platforming in some of these adventure games. Not in a sense of platformers we know. If I understand your R&C comparison there. Some of us can go through it and honestly say that totality of this adventure game is excellent above other games. Deserve GOTY consideration more then R&C. I could play The Witcher 3 and say shit there are better combat out there but **** there is no rpg like The Witcher 3, perhaps one of the best games this gen.

I know its sw and the stuff that are going to come are going to be about cow vs lems but there some of us who legitimately think this is one of the best gaming experience this year. Provided that we accept turning on that console and enjoying the medium in a interactive cinematic way if you will.

If only Uncharted was a craft beer tasting simulator with online multiplayer that lets you trade tips on how to care for your lumberjack beard and skinny jeans. Alas, Naughty Dog failed at making the game for everyone. Let's all pretend to be a DJ elsewhere.

It also doesn't play on a Mac. Seriously. What were they thinking?

It's so funny how lemmings make a uc4 bashing thread at least once a week to show us all how hurt they are that geow4 flopped so hard . Lemmings it isn't our fault that Sony keeps pushing out AAA quality games and MS doesn't .

Call of Duty, Titanfall 2 and Watchdogs 2 flopped hard as well all systems. I'd say it's more of a backlash of the stuff the industry is throwing at us to fill the void where lengthy big budget games are taking too long to make. Add a large amount of sugar coated indies to cover up a flawed delivery system and you have the video game market in a nutshell.

The end result is fanboys convincing themselves that titles like Uncharted 4 are great, when they are mediocre at best, but it's what we have so the cake has to be delicious.

Sure, only UC2 had amazing pacing but the others weren't the worst in the world. Most of these posters are children, but there seems to be a small group of us men who are frustrated by their lack of critical thinking and immaturity. (serves us right for hanging out with them at the ice cream bar, and being peculiarly out of place while doing so) That's on us I guess.

Wouldn't mind the climbing that much if it was somewhat enjoyable and challenging experience, but sadly it's not. It becomes a chore rather fast and I actually started looking for ways to actually fall/fail the climbing/platforming and that was actually surprisingly difficult at times. That being said still enjoyed the game and it's still top 15ish game of last year, but I dont see myself going back to it, maybe do the co-op playthrough once...

Well, prepare yourself for the depressing part.

The average age here is about 30 lol.

It's not so bad, there are actually plenty of level headed people here. It's just that the dumb ones happen to be more frequent and more vocal.

To be honest, replaying UC2 this year, was a rude awakening on that games pacing. There is a good stretch when that game gets going, but the opening is a bore, and there is a stretch in the middle from when you have to reclimb the train off the side of the cliff, to the snow fight, to the village, to that boring ass ice cave where the game comes to a screeching halt. Plus lets not front, that final act with the Mutants can be fairly unsatisfying stuff. And yeah I would argue 1 and 3 has bad pacing, 3 especially, be it the gameplay or its story.

The pacing in 4 is like a mixed bag. I actually think the story itself is well paced, the problem is it would be well paced for a passive medium, for a game, it's the opposite of that. It's mindless interactions that take up too much of the run time, bogs the game down.

From what I've played so far, it's your typical action 3rd person shooter with a strong storyline, but the mechanics themselves don't warrant a 10/10.

but lewl cowspot, it's a given.

I got so bored that I started looking for new ways to kill everyone by driving the jeep off of different cliffs...

This is probably the laziest come back in the history of gaming forums, really not sure why it's used so much.

And in this context it's extra dumb. We're not talking about some game that is deep, complex, or requires skill. We're talking about Uncharted. Another franchise that much like CoD, is built upon spectacle, set pieces, and very simple gameplay.

And Uncharted is all about the shooting anyways. That's the only somewhat redeeming gameplay aspect this franchise has going for it, not the brain dead "platforming" and "puzzles". If those aspects of Uncharted were actually worth a damn then it would be fine. Thing is, they're not. They're just filler. Variety is great when its executed with quality. That's not the case here.

So lay off the "CoD fans" shit as if you're speaking from some higher ground. These are equally simple franchises, one just has better production values.

lol which post, I've made a few in this thread.

Edit:

Ah, I'm guessing it's my first post.

Eh, the only thing that's dumb about that is that I bought it in the first place. I found the first 3 games to be almost entirely mediocre with Uncharted 2 easily being the best of the bunch and teetering on "good" territory. So why would I buy UC4? Yeah that's on me.

I already figured the game wouldn't be for me. And the more time goes on, the more I read about things that are an absolute turn off. The most damning moment was watching my friend play it for a few hours last month. Boredom fuel. I have zero interest in the majority of game stories, no matter how well presented they are. They just put me to sleep. I find myself completely skipping them these days which kind of defeats the purpose of playing Uncharted.

From what I understand, I'd get to enjoy a few legitimately good shoot outs amidst the same old brain dead platforming and puzzles, cinematic walking, and just way too much down time for a video game. Doesn't sound fun to me.

As it stands, I have a gigantic list of games I really want to play, new and old. Like there are easily 50 games I'd rather play through than Uncharted 4 right now lol. So I think what would be truly dumb is if I sacrificed my time to play through a game that is damn near the antithesis of what I like about video games.
