This is the second Peabody for the Life is Strange series, and now both Dont'Nod and Deck Nine have one each. Also Lucy and the Wolves in the Walls and a Minecraft mod, The Uncensored Library, have won as well in regards to gaming. This is a narrative award, other winners include Better Call Saul and Andor.

https://peabodyawards.com/award-profile/life-is-strange-true-colors/

Its citation.

"Life is Strange: True Colors centers on the story of a 21-year-old bisexual Asian American woman who has spent the last eight years in foster care, a radical departure from whose stories are typically told in AAA video games. The protagonist, Alex Chen, has the supernatural ability to sense and manipulate others’ emotions. Shortly after witnessing the tragic death of her brother, Alex, she and her friends uncover conspiracies that lead them to question the town’s history and what Alex knows about her own family. Notably, though, intense moments of darkness are balanced by unexpected happiness—such as leading an imaginative young boy through the town as part of a Live Action Roleplay (LARP) game. The game’s central mechanic, the ability to sense and influence emotions, plays a crucial role in both the narrative and the gameplay. The whole development team created a diverse and inclusive game, seeking out consultants, including mental health professionals, to ensure that the characters and themes were authentic and respectful, while using a combination of traditional motion capture and performance capture to produce more realistic and nuanced character animations. And the game features a dynamic soundtrack that changes in response to the player’s choices and emotional state, creating a more personalized and immersive experience. For showcasing both empathy as a superpower and the power of games as a medium for emotionally resonant storytelling, Life is Strange: True Colors wins a Peabody."

Oh man. Was just thinking about that a while back, how you wanted this forum to bow down to a Peabody award lmao.

Even worse, it was a "futures" award. Basically just some random college kids who liked a video game story. Same thing this time?

They implemented what was the "futures" awards (for interactive medium) into the main Peabody Award.

And no, Peabody Award is a major media award, and especially the top one for news reporting.

Its better than the mountain dew chugging doritos munching Game Awards where a bunch of idiot media types fumble on deciding who gets awards.

@texasgoldrush:

Neat.

Yeah it's all worthless to me man.

Was a time when I wished this industry had a body that recognizes the mediums strengths as opposed to hype, marketing, smelling farts, etc.

Ship has sailed though, really couldn't give a shit.

God of War Ragnarok won a ton of awards, I guess people just got tired of Sony winning awards that it’s like drinking water at this point.

Typical game stories that Sony pushes out aren't going to win Peabodies, although the Last Of Us HBO show might next year.

And really, video games don't have to win them, games can be shut out for the year.

For me in terms of relevance, its sits right next to the GOTY awards, as in has none.

Also Peabody? Sounds like something you pay a professional for after a drunken night out lol.

Yet it is a major award, the top for journalism and documentaries and major for entertainment.

For those of you that were born yesterday, the first Peabody Award that has ever been given was back in 1941.

@texasgoldrush: "the top for journalism and documentaries and major for entertainment." 🤮🤮🤮

Its means literally nothing. A game winning an award doesn't make the game more enjoyable, and not winning one doesn't make it less enjoyable.

I've never played the game, know nothing about it, but it winning an award makes me want to play it less.

I'm still waiting for the remasters of the original two to get rid of their chromatic aberration, they look awful.

It's still an American thing. And after a quick Google search their tagline line is "stories that matter" not only that there is this...

Peabody Awards honors excellence in storytelling that reflects the social issues and the emerging voices of our day.

Keep that shit out of videogames.

Its Before the Storm, not the original, that has that problem.

And really, the state of the remasters falls upon SquareEnix, who seems to not allow Deck Nine to continue to patch the game. The bug in Wavelengths still hasn't been patched as well for True Colors.

How about game designers get to do whatever they want? And major awards with serious clout like the Peabodies can award whoever the want?

You want that "out of videogames" because you don't want to be challenged, plain and simple.

This event is well noticed. There was a reason why Colbert would show off his Peabodies on his show.

I never played those games myself and the whole premises just doesn't interest me but I didn't know there's no options to turn off chromatic aberration. I would assume you could turn it off through Nvidia panel?

Nah, I've tried everything, Unreal Engine 4 usually makes it easy but with this game I can't get it turned off.

It's up to the devs, but like that other user said: they stopped patching.

But once again, only the Before the Storm remaster had those bugs in its chromatic aberration (or its shading). Those may have been patched.

And the animations were vastly improved in the original.

And it does seem that have patched the PS versions of Before The Storm today.

Except it is noticed enough.....

It is a very high end broadcast award, its very well noticed.

Genuinely curious, but when did Walter Cronkite say this? Far as I can find it's just something that's attributed to him by Peabody winners.

@texasgoldrush: First of talking to you is a challenge, everyone on here would agree with that.

Secondly the peabodies has serious clout, clout for what exactly? I had never even heard of them until you made a thread about them.

Thirdly, yes devs can make what they want, and I can not buy what they make. most people play video games to zone out from the day to day BS this world brings and to have fun, nothing more, nothing less.

The Peabody isn’t something I follow but I’ve definitely heard of them.

Anyway good for them I guess, I’m sure they’re happy and all, but it doesn’t make me interested in the game at all.

@Pedro: Can't speak for anyone other than me, but I don't. From a quick Goggle search its tells you its from America, started in the 1940's (well before video games)

So not sure why gamers should know about it. Since you seem to be in the know has any other video games won this award?

Its precursor award, yes, including the first Life is Strange.

That Dragon Cancer, Return of the Obra Dinn, and Gorogoa have also won. A gap in the category after 2018 may have cost Disco Elysium and Life is Strange 2 awards, and its category returns as a main award this year.

I played this on the Switch and cried like a little girl during the gut-wrenching parts. It was the most serious and intense entry I've played thus far. I loved it and replay it a lot so I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves.

A Peabody Award is practically the broadcast version of the Pulitzer Prize, and the look of the award is basically very similar.

And the judges tend to "go away from you" after you win (especially for entertainment) making them something difficult to win multiple of.
