Poll Let’s predict what game wins GOTY at The Game Awards (75 votes)

Baulders Gate 63%
Starfield 29%
Sea of Stars 0%
Spider-Man 2 3%
Armored Core 3 5%

For me I would say Baulders Gate will take the crown . I’ve been playing it since day one for the PC and have been loving every moment . If that doesn’t win, then I would guess Armored Core 3. It would be cool to see Sea of Stars win GOTY, (it’s such a good game that I’m 23 hours in for the ps5) but sadly indie games get over looked .

Before Starfield was released, I thought that game had a very high chance of winning, but after all these bad reviews stating the game is a bore fest , i feel any chance of that game winning has been flushed down the toilet .

Spider-Man 2 I feel will be a 9 review wise, I doubt it has a chance of winning

No Zelda, RE4, or SMB Wonder. Terrible post, BG3 wins regardless.

Doesn't need a thread, unless you're asking for subjective GOTY.

Otherwise, yeah, BG3. No contest.

3 games shouldn't be on that list, and the GotY, Zelda, isn't even on the list.

No TotK in the poll means tc is a very insecure fanboy, and this "poll" is biased and flawed. We all know TotK will win that specific goty award because it is done by votes, and the last time I checked TotK was running away in sales.

Imagine putting Sea of Stars, Starfield and Spiderman 2 as GOTY candidates, but not Zelda:TOTK or RE4: Remake.

Anywhoo.

BG3 wins even if you include them.

I think the probability of the official GOTY as well as the quantity of GOTY wins will go like this:

BG3 > Zelda:TOTK > RE4R > AC6 > Starfield

Personally, my favourite games this far are:

RE4R = BG3 > AC6 > FF16 > Starfield or Dead Space. Not sure what to give 5th place. Maybe Spiderman 2.

“Balders Gate”, “Armored Core 3”, and no Tears of the Kingdom choice? Well this thread is certainly off to a great start. 😅

Tears of the Kingdom is my top guess right now.

Nothing stands a chance against BG3, and if you still believe that a certain game does, you're delusional, and should see a professional.

Out of the favorites I've only played Tears but its too samey when compared to BotW so the novelty isnt up with it. I think BG3 will win going by this

BG3 was quite the surprise this year. Diehard sheep like @Mesome713 thought they had this year in the bag thanks to TotK and now BG3 may ruin their party. Thats funny to me XD

Isn't the Game Awards viewer voted? If so, it'll likely be Starfield or maybe Zelda. I don't see a over the head Dungeons and Dragons 130 hour strategy CRPG getting too many mainstream votes

Yes, which is why it might be difficult for BG3 to be TGA's GOTY while it will likely be the media's overall GOTY. I suspect that TOTK will give it a run for it's money while Spiderman 2 will land around the same place as starfield looking at previous MC scores for the last two spiderman games,what has been shown of spiderman 2 so far and the current discourse around superhero movies and games in general.

I think Baldur’s gate 3. Zelda is perhaps too similar to Breath of the Wild, which scooped everything.

It's a meaningless ceremony and if BG3 doesn't win GOTY (in addition to a lot of other categories), this will only validate that opinion.

People tend to confuse "best" with "favorite". My favorite game this year might be Starfield, but BG3 is clearly the better game.

I love Legend of Zelda games but both Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom are the least of my favorite Zelda games and I still love Ocarina of Time, Majoria's Mask, Wind Waker, A Link to the Past, and Oracle of Seasons/Ages. Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom are good, they are freaking overrated, but what makes them so amazing is giving players the freedom to do whatever and create whatever as Tears of the Kingdom feels like what Minecraft did. Those 2 games made it stand out from the rest of the open-world games from every Ubisoft open-world BS.

Oh yeah there's a lot of that everywhere I suppose.

Hell, just about any brewery can have a "gold medal-winning beer" just by entering any competition. Doesn't mean much, the competition might have been three other local breweries.

It's a tossup between Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur's Gate 3. By default, I would have weighted totk higher but the fact that botw already won might reduce it's chances just enough to make it 50/50

Nothing else has a shot.

I would love to see a real money prediction market's take on this. My guess is that totk and baldurs gate would each have about 47% probability, with Starfield maybe netting 3% and everything else being in the sub 1% probability state.

@theam0g: @super600: Slight correction guys.

The vote is comprised of 90% jury (I assume gaming media, or maybe they have a panel) and %10 by the public.

So as you can see the public doesn't really have much of a say.

However it's a dumb system no matter how they slice it.

On a side note, my GOTY is Remnant 2, but the general public are casuals voting for casual stuff (Zelda, Starfield, RE4R etc) and the gaming media will pick along the same lines.

So I don't watch the "GOTY" show, haven't watched it once simply because the games I like most never get nominated.

@joshrmeyer: Souls and Remnant are miles apart. People just nick named it "souls with guns" because people think of anything better for a comparison.

Remnant is at its core a third person shooter with rpg elements, Souls is a third person hack n slash game with rpg elements.

Yes they have some similarities, but to nick name Remnant that is insulting to Remnant.

But yes, not many people on here have played it. There's many reasons I see. Like it's an AA game meaning it can't be a good game, it's not aesthetically pleasing, it's not a graphical powerhouse etc.

I tried to give people info on Remnant 2, and if people don't want to play it then they're the ones missing out, at least we know it's awesome, and that's all that really matters.

I must have gotten confused by the process for the other award categories. BG3 definitely has a better chance of winning with a 90-10 spilt.

Here's a direct quote...

"The process begins with over 100 video game publications and websites, which collectively name six games as nominees. After the nominees are selected, the winner is chosen by a combined vote between the jury (90 percent) and public voting (10 percent). Since its inception, the award has been given to nine video games."

The problem is games like Zelda has just over 50 more reviews than BG3, that's just one instance, so while BG3 has a better chance, with that amount of reviews one would think Zelda will win.

@super600:

I'd say

for the TGA GOTY:

P = 70% for BG3

P = 25% for Zelda:TOTK

Resident Evil 4 Remake, Starfield, Spiderman 2, Final Fantasy 16 and Armoured Core VI have a Prob of 5% combined.

For the most GOTYs (the sum of all GOTYs given)

50% will go to BG3

40% will go to Zelda:TOTK

10% will go to RE4R and the rest.

Are we talking a 7/10 game on Gamespot or a 7/10 in general?

I was interested so I looked up the stain that is metashitc to find out, and a game that won GOTY has a 4/10, a couple of other games got a single 7/10, and one game in particular got 7 (yes 7) 7/10's and a 6.5/10 and still won GOTY.

And that was from looking up just 4 of the previous winners., after that I got bored and had to leave that site in case I caught something 🤣

@last_lap: Has a game that got both 7 on Gamespot and a 7 on IGN, ever won GOTY? The answer to that is a solid no. and will never happen either.

Are you just talking about random ass small sites??? Like no shit out of hundreds of reviewers someone out there is going to give a low score to a 10/10 game.

But that isn't Starfield's case at all. Starfields case all the biggest reviewers gave it 7-8. GOTY winners almost always get 9/10 - 10/10 from the biggest reviews like IGN, Gamespot, PCGamer, GameInformer, Famitsu, Eurogamer, etc.

Using IGN and Gamespot, the two biggest game reviewers:

2022: Elden Ring got a 10 from both IGN and GS

2021: It Takes Two got 9 GS and 9 IGN

2020: The Last of Us 2 got 8 GS (biggest fanboy review of all time) and 10 on IGN

2019: Death Stranding got 9 on GS and 6.9 on IGN

2018: God of War got a 9 on GS and a 10 IGN

2017: BOTW got 10 from both GS and IGN

2016: UC2 got a 10 on GS a 9 IGN

2015: Witcher 3 got 10 GS and 9.3 IGN

2014: Dragon Age Inquisition got 9 on GS and an 8.8 from IGN

2013: The Last of Us got an 8 on GS (worst review of all time and reviewer should be executed for worst opinion in history) and and a 10 on IGN.

2012: Dishonoured 9 GS and 9.2 IGN

2011: Skyrim 9 GS and 9.5IGN

2010: SMG2 got 10 from both IGN and GS

2009: Uncharted 2 got 9.5 from both IGN and GS

2008: Metal Gear Solid 4 got 10 from both GS and IGN

So the last 15 years have been:

10+10 | 9+9 | 8 + 10 | 9 + 6.9 | 9 + 10 | 10 + 10 | 10 + 9 | 10 + 9.3 | 9 + 8.8 | 8 + 10 | 9 + 9.2 | 9 + 9.5 | 10 + 10 | 9.5 + 9.5 | 10 + 10

@last_lap: Oh and my bad, Death Stranding is the game that won the most GOTYs in 2019, but Sekiro is the game that won the TGA GOTY.

Death Stranding with its 6.9 on IGN (but 9/10 on GS) would have been the only GOTY winner close to being a fluke (it still wasn't as GS gave it a 9)

Sekiro got a 9.5/10. from IGN and 9/10 from GS.

In other words; the lowest score given to a GOTY winner by either IGN or GS is an 8/10. On both occassions IGN gave the same game a 10/10. Coincidentally those two games are The Last of Us & The Last of Us 2

Other than those two games, every single GOTY winner has received a minimum of 8.8 from both IGN and Gamespot

EDIT2: Same mistake, UC4 was the most winning game of 2016, but Overwatch won the TGA GOTY. However GS gave it a 9 and IGN gave it a 10.

So it still stands. Almost every GOTY winner, be it the overall or the TGA winner gets a 9 or a 10 from both IGN and Gamespot.

S7arfield got a 7 from GS and a 7 from IGN. i.e. none of the reviews were flukes in any case.

Lowest average score between GS and IGN was Dragon Age: Inquisition with an average score of 8.9 (well above Starfield's average score of 7) All others average over 9 at GS+IGN.

@Mozelleple112: First off I was asking josh what he was referring to.

And secondly here's how things work at the GOTY awards.

"The process begins with over 100 video game publications and websites, which collectively name six games as nominees. After the nominees are selected, the winner is chosen by a combined vote between the jury (90 percent) and public voting (10 percent). Since its inception, the award has been given to nine video games."

Read the bold part very slowly. GS or IGN carry no more clout than any other site in that process. Being the "biggest" means literally nothing.
