https://bgr.com/2019/10/22/playstation-5-price-vs-ps4-retailer-leaks-ps5-price-and-release-date/

A report a few days ago claimed that Sony would actually miss the mid-November PS5 launch timeframe in favor of an early December rollout. The reasoning behind the move is that Sony is looking to get its hands on as many 7nm custom AMD chips as it can for the PlayStation 5 console, with AMD delivering both the CPU and GPU for the PS5 and next-gen Xbox.

A second source now offers the same early December 2020 launch estimate, providing an actual release date for the PS5. That should be December 4th, Slovakian retailer ProGamingShop claims (via ComicBook), although the listing has now been deleted. More interestingly, the shop says the console will cost €499 in the region, which converts to $550. However, a simple conversion isn’t enough to determine the PS5’s US price. That’s not how it works. If this leak is accurate, then the PlayStation 5 should cost $499 in the US.

They are correct in that a direct conversion doesn't work in cases like this. They'll probably maintain the $500 price point, which is fine. I'm of the camp where i'd pay a little more for that little bit of extra power.

A set price over a year in advance? There is no way that's real. And if it is, that means Sony is skimping on some parts and finalizing the hardware waaaaaaay too early.

100% fake

PS4 launch November 2013, it makes sense for PS5 to follow that tradition and we all know it'll launch holiday 2020 around that month anyways. If anything, Sony wants to maintain $500 price points and no way in hell console gamers will pay over $600 (PS3 was exceptional to that rule of it's time) but pricing it for $550 might work but it all comes down to what launch games will it have.

Well, that gotta meet those demanding pre-orders at some point, so the early consumers know the price, the better. As for Sony's skimping parts, I thought the Pro model was coming out simultaneously?

Well regardless if this is true or not I’m fully expecting both next gen consoles to be $499.

I can’t wait for PS5. Love the PS4 so much. And each Sony console gets better than the last. Exciting.

@davillain-: There is no way Sony knows 100% what’s in the box 13 months out. They can’t nail down a price before they know what they’re selling. There is a reason things like final specs and launch price come out as late as they do. Hell, it’s pretty much common knowledge that the big 3 would edit their slides hours/minutes before E3 press conferences that included such information.

Nailing down a launch price and date 13 months in advance is not how this works.

When should they nail the price down? The PS4 price was revealed 5 months prior and I doubt they decided on the price and the systems components the day of the reveal.

It'll be $500. More for a PSVR/PS5 bundle, obviously. I'm fine with that price.

Dec 3rd 2020 would be good since Playstation originally debuted way back in Dec 3rd 1994. 26 years later has The Playstation 5 costing $550.00 for the base model? Since the Playstation 5 Pro is releasing at the same time. Then it will be more than $550.00

E3 2020 will sort the price and release date for PS5

What's "stupid" about it? Imagine blindly handing over half a grand over brand loyalty... now that's stupid.

A year later they'll release a Pro model for the same price, but with better specs.

Why take things so literally? You know what I meant: launch games. If you have low enough standards to accept that for the highest possible price, then be my guest.

@Pedro: There were multiple reports that stated the PS Camera was pulled from the box and the PS4 price dropped to $399 the day of the reveal. I will find sources when I’m a little less busy.

Probably won't buy any next gen console until the redesign half way into the generation. No way I'm buying anything at launch.

To be fair, he's not wrong about launch games as we don't know what they'll have. That said, it still amazes me everyone here will buy PS5 day one when you should be waiting for "Pro" within 2/3 years and I'm done being a beta tester launch console and the only console I'll buy day one is Nintendo. I'll buy PS5 eventually, not on launch that's for sure. My PC will carried the void for my gaming needs and as well my Switch but in the meantime, I still have lots to do on my PS4 and still waiting for Ghost of Tsushima to be release.

Sorry but I'm with @briguyb13

Yeah sticking with my PC.

I got a PS4 for like 150 dollars and a few years late to the party, just to play the exclusives, and I was disappointed.

I will not spend 500 dollars on a console I probably won't much time on.

Yeah and they're banking on people buying them day one as well.

Smart thing would be for no one to place a pre-order and wait for them to drop the price. That won't happen, of course, because it's going to sell out....but it'd be fun if everyone could do that.

@mrbojangles25: Buying PS4 for only $150 has got to be the best thing I ever seen anyone waiting that long but that's the kind of price I'll gladly wait to go buy PS5.

I remember buying consoles day one was fun back in the days but as of now, not anymore and both Sony/MS lost their way what makes a console different then PC. I just don't get that magic feel anymore, but at least Nintendo still tries to be different then Sony/MS and that says alot.

@davillain-: I totally agree with the magic being dead. I've been there for ever launch since PS2, but besides keeping up the streak, I have no interest in buying a new console. The games being made just don't do it for me.

Why does everyone think theres going to be pro version of consoles? That little experiment failed, harder for Microsoft than Sony because Sony barely tried lol. Why do you think they said anything about 8k. Future proofing it unlike the PS4.

If given a choice between a PS5 and a PS5 Pro, I would choose the PS5. Not enough exclusives to justify paying much more than the price of the base model. I need it to be as cost-effective as possible so that I don't feel like I've just bought an expensive brick after I'm done with the four or five really good games. My favorite PS4 game, Gravity Rush Remastered, didn't even get any Pro enhancements. Neither did the beloved Bloodborne.

That's not how price conversion works. The usual difference in US vs EU is ~30% (take price in US, add 30 percent and convert to € to get the EU price), so if it's 499€, then in the US it will be going for $399-$449.

Yeah, we have been fucked over for decades over here.

You're talking like they'd be selling side by side, but they won't be. We're talking about waiting because the Pro model will likely be the same price as the launch PS5, just like PS4 and Pro were, respectively.

PS5 = Peasant Station 5

$500 launch price is not encouraging for the specs. I would prefer a second Pro SKU at a higher price at launch.

That and Sony already said they weren't planning on doing it again. They could change their minds, but it's still unlikely. MS also had plans to have two models for next gen and they scrapped that idea as well.

With Sony focusing more on Western exclusives and cinematic games on top of censoring Japanese games, gonna have to pass on this. If there's something I really want to play that isn't on switch, I'll just build a cheap gaming pc at this point. I used to be a hardcore PlayStation fan until a few months ago. They haven't been the same since the ps2 days, sadly.

"Launch games suck" is a silly fallacy. Multiple systems have had fantastic launch lineups, from the SNES to the Dreamcast to the PS2 to the X360 to the Switch.

Man, life is too short to be waiting multiple years for the things you love, just to save 100 quid. Who says there will be a "Pro" version next gen and who says that the launch lineup has to suck? These are all just as big assumptions as the people saying it'll definitely be awesome.

And yet, everyone's jumping on PS5 like there's no tomorrow and yeah, life is too short but at the same time, I can still get more enjoyments out of my PS4, PC, & Switch combine. Only thing PS5 has going for is their exclusives and speaking of, we still don't know what games they'll have yet. Rather it be a Pro version or not, there's always gonna be something coming after PS5 launch and if no Pro version, I'd expect a slim model down the road.

I often regret purchasing PS4 day one but at the end, I was satisfied with my purchase and I still have much to do on PS4.

I need it to be as cost-effective as possible so that I don't feel like I've just bought an expensive brick after I'm done with the four or five really good games. My favorite PS4 game, Gravity Rush Remastered, didn't even get any Pro enhancements. Neither did the beloved Bloodborne.

You're talking like they'd be selling side by side, but they won't be. We're talking about waiting because the Pro model will likely be the same price as the launch PS5, just like PS4 and Pro were, respectively.

But the price will go down anyway, like almost any electronics. The slim PS4 and Pro did sell side by side. I bought my slim after the Pro was already out and didn't feel like a fool for doing so, like davillain's post implies. I bet he or she has purchased PC parts in their first year, before they were discounted so much.

It's fun to hope though. Sony have been absolutely nailing it with their 1st party games on PS4, releasing multiple AA and AAA exclusives each year. It's not unreasonable to think/hope that'll continue on PS5, but with even better tech.

We're gamers! We like games! It's fun to get excited :P

I'm sure if the launch lineup IS garbage (and we'll know what it is before anyone has to buy anything!) then enthusiasm will cool.

Why does everyone think theres going to be pro version of consoles? That little experiment failed, harder for Microsoft than Sony because Sony barely tried lol. Why do you think they said anything about 8k. Future proofing it unlike the PS4.

Agreed. Too many people think because a company does something once, then that means they're eternally committed to the same actions.

@Pedro: There were multiple reports that stated the PS Camera was pulled from the box and the PS4 price dropped to $399 the day of the reveal. I will find sources when I’m a little less busy.

Well that is kind of my point. The price can be set prior to full reveal but they can still make adjustments based on the market.

And even if this were true, which I doubt necessarily doubt, they would have already known how much the base system and camera would be on their own without being bundled.

Honestly, I think $499 is the price they're going to sell it at. PS4 was $399 and they were making a profit on each one sold. This time around, I see them taking a loss just to not cross that $500 mark.

These consoles are going to cost too much imo. £400 is usually the upper limit. I see why they have to do it, as they need something significantly more powerful than the XXbone.

But it's dumb to early adopt.

  • Premium price
  • Games which use about half of the consoles performance
  • A lack of first year games.
  • Bare bones console software for the first year (if the Xbox One is anything to go by)
  • A risk of 1st year hardware issues. There isn't many home consoles released that haven't suffered from some early flaws.
  • And in M$s case, they may shit the bed and start dropping or changing features (Kinect, Exclusives,,,)

Too early to know exact launch date. Fake news. But who cares if its December or November...

Will maybe pass as well. PS2 days were amazing, games were games, now they are too much like movies. Its cool to play Days Gone, Horizon and so but its too much of the same. Death Stranding, TLOU2, Ghost of Tsusima.... all third person single player.. cinematic. Even God of War turned into another locked camera generic third person cinematic lol. I hope Xbox wins next gen... tbh.

Nice to see some people not being sheep and walking away from Sony. They don't respect old fans like Microsoft with backwards comp. They don't respect players who used to play first party multiplayer. Sony are becoming a joke.

I learned this gen with the PS4 Pro and Xbox X not to buy consoles when they are released so I will wait next gen.

I think it is too early to speculate price, even if one has a good idea what the tech will cost, I do wonder though what competition from Microsoft might do to price if they bait each other into a pricing war.

That would be the ideal scenario for us.
