Which is better, and why? This can be about overall performance, gameplay (tactical, strategy, etc), visuals, connectivity, etc.
Last of Us:
Gears of War (UE, 2, 3)
Gears of War's multiplayer is better, as I much prefer arena shooter principles to the whole loadout, unlocking item, perks nonsense. However, I do really enjoy The Last of Us multiplayer. The slower nature of that game, and how its systems work make for a more methodical pace, and makes the kills satisfying. So I'd give it to Gears of War by a hair on mp, the thing is, as good as the campaign is for Gears 1, The Last of Us is actually a great single player game. Gears 1 and 2 are merely good. 3 was more aight.
Gears of War was heavily centered around good MP and is well known and well remembered for it.
Last of Us MP was a tacked-on waste of time.
Gears of War's single player story was so bad it makes your skin crawl.
Last of Us is one of the only games so far with a story that can be considered genuinely good even when compared to other forms of media.
Lets be honest with ourselves here, as far as story writing goes most videogames are absolute shit compared to a genuinely good book, movie.... or even a TV broadcast.
Uncharted's storyline would basically make for a mediocre action movie. Mass Effect would make for a mediocre cable TV series. Halo would be almost like a low-budget "SyFy" series. The actual core story to Mass Effect, on its own, isn't actually that good. People remember it best for the way they project themselves onto the story.
Dead Space 1 actually could make for a decent B-horror movie.
Silent Hill has.... some potential. Not much, but some. It could definitely end up better than the actual movies we got. etc etc etc
LOU's story isn't just good "for a videogame". It actually holds up reasonably well on its own.
These games are so different you might as well compare goat simulator to UFC
I prefer Goat Simulator myself.
For MP? Easily Gears. Oddly enough, mp was never planned for Gears. It was added last minute and it's still better than most shooters. I'm not even going to bring horde into this.
Although Gears and Gears 2 definitely had more impact on me back in the day, I think it would be foolish to deny that The Last of Us is simply the better designed game.
In terms of multiplayer, I never played TLOU multi (it seems to be besides the point, and missing a lot of what makes the single player so compelling), and I spent hundreds of hours on Gears and Gears 2 multiplayer modes- so Gears takes it there in my opinion.
Overall, however, I would still call The Last of Us the better game- if I could only have played either Gears or TLOU, I would have played TLOU.
This thread made me realize how much I want horde mode in The Last of Us 2.
I could see it working in UC but no way would a horde mode work with TLOU gameplay

Uncharted had co op round survival modes, which was basically the same thing

It had co-op but not a traditional horde mode Like gears or mass effect
Oh you're talking about MP. I was confused at first. I thought you were comparing an action focused TPS to a tense stealth game.
Last of Us is a good story in an average game. GoW a mnhe story with polished gameplay. To be honest I don't care for neither. Maybe the 2 developers could join forces and make a complete game, preferentially multi-platform to avoid brand blindness. MP wise I can't say I don't play online shooters.
are we talking only about MP?
If that is the case then yea, Gears was probably better at MP. TLoU was just an overall better game.

We don't care about goats. Now go back to your farm, your goats require feeding.
TLOU it's a top 5 GOAT as voted by MC

The Last Of Us isn't defined as a stealth game. It has stealth elements, but it's more an action adventure TPS at heart. Shooting being the mechanic it does best. Gears is as comparable to TLOU as any other third person shooter.
@bobrossperm: I'd say the shooting is the mechanic that the game most actively deters players from using. 90% of the time shooting a gun is suicide in TLOU. It's a stealth game first and foremost as far as I can tell.
Of course I only played the game once and on hard mode.

Mmm, it's a stealth game, because by basic genre rules it doesn't really belong in any genre. It has mechanics that are from survival horror games, but it sure as **** isn't that. It's a third person shooter, but like you said there are good stretches where you just hold your ground and try to avoid conflict, it's a stealth game, but it out right pigeon holes you into action sequences, and lets you get away with a lot of your **** ups with some powerful as weapons.
It's very much a third person shooter though, it's just a different way of doing it instead of full on making it a shooter. Similar to how I would argue Metroid Prime is totally a FPS, it just shows that you can make a FPS, where the shooting isn't the only fucking thing you do, or even the driving force of the experience. Genre rules just force a lot of samey shit.
Like everyone said:
Gears has better MP
TLOU has better SP
TLOU was designed more for SP, with stealth, better weapons, and far far better story writting
Gears was designed more for arcade shoot 'em up gameplay, so the story lacked big time and it was basically the same gameplay elements through the entire game.
