Kotaku calls Xenoblade Chronicles X boring in their preview

If I were to describe my 70 hours with Xenoblade X in one word, it would be “boredom.” The main story did little to get me invested, the side quests were repetitive at best, and the combat was a painfully monotonous slog even with the advanced classes unlocked.

The game’s one redeeming feature is the world of Mira itself. In the years to come, I hope that the hours I spent exploring beautiful landscapes of this alien world are what I remember about Xenoblade X, and not, you know, everything else.

Ouch. This kinda dampened my spirits for this game. I was really hoping it would be the next Xenogears for me. Hopefully this is just one opinion and not what most will think. Right, SW?

OK seriously, I never take what Kotaku say seriously anyway, I've loved Xenogears and Xenoblade so I'm still looking forward to X.

Seriously though, I've been keeping an eye on this game since day 1, and I'm still very hyped for it. I loved the first game so that's to be expected.

It is in a genre which often gets described as such.

Did the person state why? As a "professional" the person writing the piece should be able to articulate this. If not, then they should seek out a different job.

Anyway, sounds like the first game. Neat world and combat but garbage side quests and main quest. meh. The game is only being hyped because Wii U exclusive.

As I have already beaten the game, I will have to disagree and agree with some points from kotaku. Though I have enjoyed the game a lot, and want more because the game ended in a cliffhanger, because in the end another question arose that tells us that there will be a part 2 for the game. There are times when I felt most of the board quests to be very tedious and not rewarding for your effort

General reception in Japan is mixed as well.

Apparently the guy previewing it didn't enjoy the last game as well. So I think it's safe to assume it may just not be his cup of tea. I hope it isn't boring or dull when it finally is localized to the U.S., I haven't had the chance to play the last Chronicles game so it will be completely new to me.

Honestly, this game sounded way to ambitious for its own good. Any JRPG developer that claims their game is over a 100+ hours long is definitely not a good sign. Most JRPGs are filled with crap tons of mediocre filler, XCX doesn't seem to change any of that. Also, the fact that the entire combat system is like an MMORPG sounds really fucking boring.

Yeah I can read. I didn't feel like reading it which is why I asked if he stated why it was boring. I saw people drawing comparisons to Polygon and was curious if it was another Carolyn Petit-esque "review".

Nothing could be as boring as an Uncharted game.

-MMO combat, slow compared to even most other MMORPGs.

-Most battles can be resolved using one simple strategy.

-Enemies can attack the player through geometry.

-Uninteresting main story and side quests.

-Repetitive gameplay.

Yeah, that sounds like he didn't like the first game or didn't play it at all (don't know, I won't give Shitaku any clicks). So, his opinion on the game is pretty much worthless to me.

I'd rather listen to freedom01's take over it.

I'm more interested in seeing what a larger group of people who have played the game think. I know some people at Kotaku said that Xenoblade Chronicles was boring as well, dunno if it was this same guy.

I'll wait for more previews... Especially since this is Kotaku.

Yeah, well, the original Xenoblade was sort of shit, so I wouldn't be surprised if X was too.

That said, one person said it was boring- countless others have said it was great. The sample size is insufficient right now.

I'll have to read it. I didn't know it was even out yet. I didn't play the one on the Wii--was thinking about buying it for 3ds. RPGs in general are very particular to the player a lot of the times. Those seem to be real issues if they are in fact there(except for the story part)--oddly people gloss over Final Fantasy 7 having real issues.

If you see it used, I really recommend getting it. I sank 118hrs into my last playthrough.

I hope its good. Its the only WiiU game I'm buying this year.

There could be over 20 glowing previews than with just one negative preview and people go "ouch, I'm losing hype". lol

Not surprising, they also said the same thing about Xenoblade 1.

Never played a game from this dev that I liked. Baiten Kaitos was shit, Xenoblade was shit, and this game will be super shit.

Well it is Kotaku, so it doesn't hold much water. Xenoblade isn't everyone's cup of tea anyway, so makes sense that some people don't like it.

Yeah i agree, if the person didnt like Xenoblade Chronicles ( one of the best jrpg of all time ) then its really no surprise they didnt like Xenoblade Chronicles X.

You have to remember that video game reviewers are not like general consumers. Movie critics suffer from the same problem, but it is now worse for game reviewers now that they are under the microscope and having to list how much of the game they actually played before doing the review.

For a gamer, an 80 hour JRPG is a month or two of coming home and playing 1-3 hours a night, several nights a week. It is something to look forward to, they think about it some while at work or school, and other obligations get in the way of finishing it. Anticipation builds up to play it more, and taking 80 hours in twenty to fifty bite size chunks cuts down on how quickly the game gets old.

To a Video Game Reviewer releasing a review on a deadline, an 80 hour JRPGis ten straight eight hour days, assuming they got a copy ten days before the review was due. Contrast that with a quick seven to ten hour campaign in an AAA blockbuster, and you start to see why the gaming press is releasing articles about how you shouldn't knock off points for a $60 game being five hours long.

I'm gonna buy it day 1 and see for myself if the game is good or not. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles and I know others didn't.

BTW Kotaku sucks.
