I can't remember the last time I've heard Phil Spencer talk about the Kinect being an integral part of the XB1.
His silence on the matter basically confirms what I've thought for awhile. They know there is no future with that device.

It has a future, just not the one they imagined. It's a great multifaceted device with a lot of practical applications, but it being used for core games surrounding it is not one. Great webcam and streaming device, great for navigating the UI's, TV programming, great for commands like screen shots, streaming, snapping, switching between things instantaneously, and one of the things I like the best is when games incorporate it into them. Simple things like the navigation system in Forza Horizon 2, attraction commands and directions in Dead Rising 3 or the commands you can use in Ryse to fire a volley, stuff like that.
Kinect is not bad, not even remotely, however they didn't approach it from the right angles and it bit them in the ass. I wouldn't want an Xbox One without one to be completely honest, people have no idea how much this thing betters the console experience itself even if the programming for it is sparse.
As a piece of tech it's still very useful.
As a gaming device, it has about as much life left in it as the PS Move.
or the commands you can use in Ryse to fire a volley, stuff like that.
Yeah, awesome. That stuff is beyond useless. Not only did I feel like an idiot when I yelled "Fire volley" again and again while my girlfriend was in the room, a press of a button was much quicker and way more precise. I got a few Kinect party games for the giggles and just controlling the menu with hand gestures is absolutely terrible. May Kinect stay dead and never rise again.
I find it useful when playing Mass Effect 3 at it's time but now, the damn thing ain't that impressive. That said, MS really **** it up when they tried to shove it on everyone's throat when the Xbox One reveal and common sense would have told them to not even bring it for next-gen cause everyone in the feedbacks told them no Kinect and now, they are paying the price. Sony on the other hand didn't bother bringing PS Move cause everyone told them it suck and they listen.

Yep, it's easier to just hit a single button instead of shouting words at a screen when people are walking around. I still can't believe people try to talk that experience UP. It's a joke.
I have an Xbone with Kinect, and the damn thing can't even hear me over my 7.1 surround. It's just a stupid device that has some applications depending on where you are in life, but I'm not going to drop my high quality surround sound experience to shout at my TV.
Yes. Then again it was dead on the 360 and MS tried to resuscitate it. I don't think they read markets correctly.
There are still some games coming out for it and there has been quite a few Kinect titles this year but they're low profile when and not really heavily marketed. I think it will stay this way with some occasional Just Dance or something like that thrown in the mix from time to time.
I think Kinect's future lies within Cortana's integration which should finally morph voice commands into something that will finally live up to its original promise, at least in this field.
Anyway, this is the last time Spencer talked about Kinect:

I bought a Kinectless X1 but I'd still love to have the Kinect, perhaps when they're cheap enough I'll nab one or better yet if MS just starts giving them to those of us who've had XBLG for over 10 years? yeah, yeah, how bout it MS? :P
@sts106mat:
Yep, figure that's what I'd use it for and I dunno, I'd just kinda like to have the Complete system the way it was intended from the start. Who knows, somewhere down the line somebody might actually come up with something close to a killer app for the device not that I'll be holding my breath or anything lol.
@SecretPolice: its neat how you can turn it on by speaking and it recongnises you as soon as you walk in. besides the voice control, we use it for skyping family in australia. The skype app is creepy how it follows you around the room and zooms in on you haha. i have tried to hide from the camera and it finds me as soon as i pop into the room !
Yes it's really neat when companies make things that have the potential to remove privacy.
@hello505: LOL exactly what I came in here to say
VR's got more of a future than waggle ever did, RR360OD. :)
@LJS9502_basic: so you think webcams should be banned?
Such hyperbole. Where did I mention the word ban?

so you don't have a webcam?
or
you have one and have security concerns about it?
I don't have one on all the time to see when I walk in a room sunshine.

Yeah, I wouldn't hold your breath.

Oh crap, now I feel I should hold my breath. :P

The motion sensor part is, the audio controls are not.
What's interesting is the company responsible for Kinect approached Apple first, and Apples aid, "Naw, I don't think so."
So, if you have a marginally good idea, but one that's not fully realized in practice, go to MS. They'll hook you up.
I use it everyday....doesn't seem dead. It's good for kiddy games and it's still beneficial for voice commands in some AAA games ( ie FIFA 16 )
But I use it everyday for all the other great stuff it does...."xbox record that" "xbox take a screenshot" "xbox on" "xbox turn off" "xbox volume up" "xbox volume down" "xbox watch TV" "xbox go to Netflix" "xbox play Forza 6" etc etc
@LJS9502_basic: dont call me sunshine.
Kinect isn't on all the time, get real.
Yet it recognizes you when you walk in the room..........your words.
@LJS9502_basic: when you tell it to switch on.
Yeah it's not off if it can hear a command and respond. Come on dude.
I love how quick cows will point out how Kinect isn't used as much as before when a bigger failure like Move never shared any success whatsoever.
It was released as a glorified microphone and it was dead on arrival. It was this generation's HD-DVD add-on drive.
Mine hasn't been hooked up for almost a year and I have no desire to hook it back up. I can't even trade the thing in or sell it on ebay because nobody is really buying them. Maybe I'll just hook it back up so I can use the "Xbox Record That" voice function. It's all I ever used it for. It never worked to turn the console on, unless it was a commecial on tv and at the end when it says "now on Xbox One" or Xbox One now $349", it turns the console on. Never when I say "Xbox on" though. My Wife laughed at this all the time while I would get so irritated, so I unhooked it.

I would rather have a microphone peripheral, in retrospect. I will admit I had high hopes for the XB1 Kinect, and those hopes have been crushed. It's cool tech, but I just don't see it being used in games. Maybe in a hololens type environment, but that's years away.
Why are you using an alt Grenadelauncher?
Also, suggesting a Sony peripheral has a future?
lmao good one
More of a future than the cablebox and its glorified microphone does. :)

I got a gamerpic for being a gold member since the beta so there's hope!
