Anything first person, or third person if there's heavy focus on gunplay, plus strategy games and iso-ARPGs, mouse and keyboard every time.

Racing games, fighters, anything where you're primarily flying/driving vehicles, and third person action/RPGs like Witcher or Dark Souls, controller. Either PlayStation or Steam Controller.

I prefer controller myself. I’ve mostly used a controller over my time as a gamer so I’m pretty comfortable with it. It’s also just my comfortable to use in regards to my body positioning when I’m playing. Keyboard and Mouse is certainly more accurate and capable in certain types of games, especially when those games are designed for it, but when it comes to what I prefer to use it’ll be a controller.

I've found myself using controllers more and more since my PC is right next to my bed currently, but M/K are still a must for FPS's (aside from Mirror's Edge) and Isometric RPG's. I tried Divinity Sin 2's local co-op a few months back (you have to use the controller for split screen) and good lord was it clunky and glacial to actually get anything done. I don't understand how console gamers can stand playing those kind of games like that.

That said aside from the inventory management I do prefer playing Diablo-style games with a controller now. Miffed Grinding Gears won't update Path of Exile with such support like Grim Dawn did.

I think the only genres i would choose a controller in are racing games (would go the whole racing wheel/pedals route if i could) and beat em ups. oh and platformers (2D and 3D).

Most games i will generally play with a KB+M. its usually the best tool for the job.

When it comes to first person games, the smoothness of a mouse helps a lot compared to analog sticks which pretty much require lock-on aim (which I hate)

When it comes to third person games, I far prefer a controller to control the movement of my character compared to WASD

As for RTS, no question asked. M/KB has this genre covered, with all the fast clicking required and loads of hotkeys

I've know people who play sports games like FIFA or racing games with a KB/M. But I prefer controllers for those.

And lastly there are platformers, I'll take a controller for those too.

Keyboard & mouse for most games including my core of shooters, strategy and role-playing. Controller for racing, third-person hack'n'slash, fighting, etc.

Naturally, because I don't play them as much as my core three genres, my controller tends to go unused a lot.

Same here - although I'm a bit unsure what goes in the Action/Adventure bin. Probably "either way" depending on what games qualify

  • First Person Shooter - KB/M. Fumblesticks suck at this.
  • Third Person Shooter - KB/M. Fumblesticks suck at this.
  • Action/Adventure - Controller on PC.
  • Fighting - Controller or Joypad on PC.
  • RPG - KB/M. Ability wheel pausing sucks. More binds is win. Easier selecting targets. Etc.
  • RTS/Tactical - KB/M by a mile.
  • Racers - Racing Wheel

M and KB for almost everything. Controllers need to evolve. The current design was made over two decades ago with much simpler games in mind. Most of those original games didn't even have movable cameras.

Console gamer, so, easier just to use controller for me. Mouse would give better precision but I don't play competitive MP so there is no pressing reason for me to use a mouse and keyboard even if next gen consoles allow for it.

KB/M on almost everything with camera aiming except for most sidescrollers, sports games, racing games and some JRPGs.

In general prefer controller for everything except RTS. I haven't played Diablo on console, but I would imagine my preference would still be mouse and keyboard for most ARPGs and MMOs.

Mouse and keyboard for shooters is just too easy in my opinion. I prefer the game of who can overcome the challenges of a controller. But it also becomes unfair and not fun to play with a controller against mouse and keyboard. I don't even like the fact that pro controllers are allowed in multiplayer. Everyone should start with the same tool for fairness.

FPS - KB/M
TPS - KB/M
Action/Adventure - Depends. Batman Arkham games with KB/M, Dark Souls games with controller.
Fighters - Controller
Racers - Controller
Platformers - Controller
Strategy - Don't really play, but anything else than KB/M would be torture.

It's Keyboard and mouse unless it's a driving, fighting or a Dark Souls game.

Note: Sekiro plays decently with a mouse and keyboard, so not all action RPG games like Dark Souls make me use a controller, just the ones that don't have good k/m controls. For example, I used keyboard and mouse with the Batman and Witcher games as well.

Depends on the genre for me really. But any genre works on a mouse n keyboard. I've seen some sick fighting game players n DMC players on a mouse n keyboard, my personal comfort level isn't there, but the keyboard for fighting games did get me into getting a hitbox. Shit is lit.

I like controllers for game where precise aiming is not important.

I use controllers with:

  • 2D & 3D platformers
  • Certain 3rd-person action games (Dark Souls)
  • JRPGs
  • Kart and Arcade Racing games (otherwise wheel setup is preferred)

That's about it. Precise aiming with controllers sucks real bad.
