July NPD leak: Switch (narrowly) and Splatoon #1, Xbox One < 105k

Apparently even leakers are embarrassed by XB1 sales.

Hardware:

NSW: 222K

PS4: 217K (+34.7%)

3DS: 105K (-44.3%)

Software:

PS4: 2299K (+52.0%)

NSW: 736K

3DS: 384K (-49.2%)

Splatoon 2 #1 332k

Switch is still supply constrained in the US, but not heavily. They can be found in many stores which have less consumer traffic. Basically, it's sold out in big cities and online, but in less populated areas stores have 2-10 units collecting dust. Also wow with those Splatoon sales relative to how much Switch software was sold. (Speaking of which, in before Switch is called a failure for being so utterly decimated in software sales because context doesn't matter).

Another good month for PS4, 3DS is on its last legs, and the first rule of sales club is that you don't talk about Xbox.

How many respawns on live though?

X1 is probably not charting (it's Uncharted ;)) because people are waiting for the new system. We'll see a small spike for the holidays and then it will level out again. Plus, I believe 3DS is nearing the end of its life span so that will be dropping in the next year or two opening a spot for Microsoft.

If MS aren't worried about these terrible numbers they are very stupid. I'm sure they are feverishly planning on their next step.

Living in an area where the two "big" cities have around 75k residents, Switch hits the shelves and then sells rather quickly. The hardware doesn't sit anywhere long enough to gather dust. Really the only thing determining how long it stays on the shelf is what time of the day the stock arrives and gets shelved. Supply is still an ongoing issue for sure.

Just when you think the situation with MS couldn't get any sadder......boom. I bet the XB1 sold like 10 units.

@Solaryellow: You're actually right. Looking into anecdotes more, it's actually only easy to find in stores people don't think of looking in. So yeah, sales are definitely still more supply dependant that demand at this point. I'm also hearing that restocks are becoming more common.

Switch should pass 2 million sold in the US this month.

They'll see a moderate spike during the holidays but things will go back to being dire once the XboneX launch hype fades.

There's no hope for them this gen and there's nothing they can do to salvage the Xbone brand, that ship has sailed. They need to start planning for next gen and a new line of consoles to distance themselves from the toxic Xbox One brand name. Next gen they need to come in hard with games, and real exclusive games not this "console launch exclusive" garbage. They also have to make sure that they don't make any stupid mistakes or gimmicks like forced DRM or Kinect 3.0. Launching decent hardware at a $399 price point will also be helpful.

it's good to see the two big restocks of switch in july actually resulted in sales.....

still.... for ps4 to be that close.... just means that console is digusting at selling lol....holidays are definitely up for grabs...cod/battlefront.assassins creed vs mario/xenoblade...it doesnt look pretty :P

only 300k but.....its probably a lot more because i remember ARMS was like debut #5..numbers were 125k and it was totally wrong and still sold a million worldwide.

we'll have to wait for nintendo for the full splatoon sales..... i'm thinking it's 2.5 million right now...but idk

This Xmas when Best Buy has pallets of PS4 consoles, Nintendo can not afford to counter with a mere 10 or 20 a store.

That gap is not normal for xbox. People are waiting to buy X1X perhaps. I think there will be more excitement there than there was for the ps4poo. Things will be back to normal with some strong sales from X1X. Its gotta have a big launch xbox fans are ready.

The Xbone Minecraft bundle was officially $249 for the whole month, and there was game giveways and firesales on the other Xbone's too. Are we sure Xbone isn't #1 ?

Having made stock available and in plenty of supply was far more important than whether or not each one was sold. If the stock is anything like it is now, Xmas will be a successful bust for Nintendo which will leave many an unhappy customer or hopeful customer.

Edit: The day S2 was released both Target and B.B. had about 6 Switches. A week later (after selling out) they had 3-6 each. That won't fly.

Thats not that impressive considering Switch has a VERY small install base and almost got half. I mean hell, Splatoon alone got bout 400K. Those numbers are actually embarrassing.

@iandizion713: These numbers were for July. There were no big releases for PS4 in July while Switch had Splatoon. What do you think will happen towards the end of this year when all the big PS4 and multi-platform games are out like COD, Star Wars, Assassins Creed, etc.? These are extremely impressive software numbers for Sony any how you look at it.

This is pointless because we all know Sony won this gen. The battle will be for the mid - gen console race that starts this November.
